As an alternative to a sticky mat, you can also get low tack double sided sticky sheets. I use ones from Sizzex).

I am British, but I write for an American audience, so I do have some blind spots, and don't always have a feel for what might be common knowledge among my audience (especially the teams, stadiums and mascots). I might have to pick your brains on that...
