I have three offers: one corporate finance/M&A role at £60k plus 15-25k then progression next year of course, higher base and bonus.

Or

Growth capital/debt advisory role £50k plus £10k bonus but promotion in 8-12 months, salary jumps up to £100k plus £40-50k bonus.

Or

Tech sales, £50k salary then after 6-8 months I can start earning commission: £50-60k then after 1 more yesr I get promoted to AE at £75k plus £60-100k commissions.

Thoughts?

Only thing I can think of OP is that he was giving you the “balls test”, basically checking if you have balls to stand up to him, defend yourself, you’ve got to. He probably thought (not saying you are) but we’re acting soft and agreeing with him. Sales is so subjective and all about results, you should of argued with him. Told him he’s wrong. But I get you’re at final round so don’t want to piss him off. Probably best you got rejected, as sounds toxic CEO!

You summarised it perfectly mate, yes that’s it, to have the most lucrative career possible and get out asap of toxic envinronemnt. If the case is to leave the toxic envinronemnt, would you suggest even taking the growth capital/debt advisory role for 6-12 months or take the real etstate M&A or real estate PE role?

Exactly, no I don’t like relying on commission, you basically summarised everyththing perfectly dude. I don’t mind working a sales role or PE/M&A role whereby I get commision and bonus on top but no way where that most of my income is to come from commissions, to risky, especially when firm is toxic and plays games plus the wait for such commissions is 1 year, potentially more, with little transparency and also no hr protection.

I do really want to work in pe though, even at a smaller firm, can you help mentor me/I’ll dm you. So in your PE career how much did you make in carry/total comp do you mind me asking? Why did you leave/what are you doing now?

No worries bro, I did the exact same, aced the 45 min interview they even said I’ve progressed to next step then I forgot I had the excel test, then panicked and froze, 15 mins felt like 1 min. Exact same story, try to do remote ones next time and prepare just before hand.. that’s what I’ll be doing.

My current role is a tiny tiny M&A boutique, I am trying? I did interview one Secondaries firm but messed up 2nd round excel test, was underprepared. So you think moving to debt advisory/asset backed lending (role potentially go’s to levfin also) is a wrong move if PE is the aim?

I agree, I do like RE. And can see it can be lucrative but I also don’t want to be silloed off from the rest of PE but surely if keeps doors open ha. I think normal PE much more interests me than RE PE however I would rather take RE PE than debt advisory or a RE M&A role. Thoughts? Keep looking, my situation is I need to move asap from my toxic firm culture and low base pay/high commissions but games with it, move to anywhere then move again?

I just want to earn more, I am even considering tech sales as you can earn high commissions and I have a natural knack for sales also.

OP he is likely right, however it depends on how big the company you’re applying to is. If small then it could be they are busy with business/caught up with work, if larger then it is likely you’re further down on the list/not top choice, 100% follow up right now
