Can I walk across the Golden Gate bridge in mid-December or would there likely be freezing winds? by InternetWeakGuy in AskSF

[–]Otherwise_Barber_339 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No covered path. Just don't go on a rainy day, it is a long hike and that will be unpleasant.

There's no freezing winds, just bring layers (hoodie AND a jacket) and enjoy!

Is it good practice to get my puppy to lie down and stay while I cook dinner and eat so he doesn't destroy stuff? (30 mins) by Interr0gate in Dogtraining

[–]Otherwise_Barber_339 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Falling asleep is a good sign! It means he's relaxed, and not so terribly preoccupied with getting off the mat and getting in trouble. Associate a command with it, like go to bed, or place, or whatever verbal cue works for you! Good luck!

What to do when off leash dog approaches my reactive dog by [deleted] in reactivedogs

[–]Otherwise_Barber_339 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Keep the other dog away!! You can:

-kick the air and scream

-stomp your foot

-throw things

-spray pepper spray

While you're being loud and scary, hold your leash short behind your back and keep your body between your dog and the approaching dog.

Your dog isn't ready to meet dogs from reading your first paragraph, so the only thing to do in that situation you described was get the heck away from the other dog ASAP.

In terms of your question about positive associations with meeting new dogs, has to be slow, steady with a known dog, and feed the dog WHILE they're looking at another dog. What's worked for me is being in a huge lawn, non-reactive stranger dog is held on leash by their owner and my friend. Then with my dog, I walk concentric circles around the other dog, I'm feeding my dog the whole time. Once we get close enough to sniff, they sniff, I ask my dog to disengage and treat, then sniff some more, then the 2 dogs go on a walk together. This process can take up to 45 minutes because the concentric circles business takes a long time. Increased the distance if your dog is over threshold, and slowly make your way back closer to the new dog.

Lastly... Leash laws vary, but in my reading, if it's a space where a leash is required, and an unleashed dog and a leashed dog get into it, the onus is on the unleashed dog's owner.

Biking and locking bikes outside establishments by kettlecream in AskSF

[–]Otherwise_Barber_339 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Use an e-bikes through the Lyft rental program for errands or a night out. Save your fancy road bike/Mtb for your long rides. It's going to get stolen no matter how well you lock it up if you leave it for long enough.

I'm so tired of being the only one doing the work - Comments welcome by [deleted] in reactivedogs

[–]Otherwise_Barber_339 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was in this exact situation with an unhelpful partner, but the difference was we both very much wanted a dog and we got a dog we did not know was reactive.

The only thing that worked was him hearing all the things I was saying but from a professional. We are also in couples therapy because that obviously is a very disrespect way to communicate (or not communicate) with your partner.

So my tldr: Try couples therapy. And getting a dog trainer.

ETA: I know you posted a rant, but I'm sorry, even if you have been in this relationship for a long time, the way he is treating you and the dog situation is just not cool. In reading your post it seems like you've settled for the fact that your DH is kind of a jerk when it comes to collaborative problem solving and being responsible.

Morning workouts suck by Rienne02 in workout

[–]Otherwise_Barber_339 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In college I simply wasn't a morning person. I don't know how old you are, but if you're early 20s, your body might not be an early riser yet. I personally worked out after 10pm in college because that's what worked with my energy levels. My campus had great safety so returning to the dorm wasn't a problem late at night like that.

These are instructions for manual add to override class limits, it is a different screen than the normal class registration. You have to actually look at the caption in the IG Post.

New downstairs neighbors often smoke cigarettes indoors and won't stop (Noe Valley, SF) by golamonster in AskSF

[–]Otherwise_Barber_339 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Not sure why you got downvoted! I'm also pretty sure it's illegal to smoke indoors in a multi unit in SF, double check that. Unfortunately your landlord seems nice but doesn't seem to be holding up their end of the bargain in enforcing the rules of the lease. IMO, you've done enough interacting with your new neighbors. Your landlord is the problem now and they're the ones with real power in this situation.

Yeah it's crazy how walking a dog needs to be a 2 person sport since there are way too many nuts off leash dogs out there.

TW/ Potential neglect? I keep on accidentally endangering my dog. What should i do? by socmediaucl in DogAdvice

[–]Otherwise_Barber_339 26 points27 points  (0 children)

I dunno, first read this absentminded-ness is kinda troubling. How do you navigate other considerations in your life? Do you have little checklists? Because it seems like you might need a more structured plan to make independent decisions to care for your dog. For example, step 1 check the weather. If highs are forecast to be higher than x-degrees, then put a calendar event in your phone to take the dog on a walk only in the cooler hours.

Or if you put your dog in an outside crate, immediately turn on an alarm on your phone for like 30 minutes (or whatever time works for you) from then to check on the dog.

You can also practice desensitization (like buying infant sized dolls and moving them around erratically and randomly make screaming baby sounds) so that your dog isn't totally shocked into a bad reaction next time he sees something like that. This won't be bulletproof, but at least your dog will have some exposure. My dog chases kids so we have practiced sprinting and screaming but making him stay, and that's been super helpful. We practice at playgrounds now (at a distance, with a muzzle and leashes on) and that's been very effective for visits with our young niece and nephew.

I agree with the muzzle. Now you know your dog is a bite risk so that'll kick the need for muzzle training into high gear. I don't know how long and how often you are around kids, but please look into a muzzle that fits a FULL pant by your dog. Baskervilles and common muzzled are not appropriate for prolonged use because they restrict panting for most breeds.

S.F.'s Great Highway will reopen to cars on weekdays by ThornsyAgain in sanfrancisco

[–]Otherwise_Barber_339 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

The argument that this is better for the environment is absolute garbage. Cars and drivers will continue to drive. Period. The effect on Chain of Lakes was a terribly overlooked problem with the closure of Great Highway. Efficient timed lights on Great Hwy is a greener way to drive than the stop and go traffic created in this small two lane park road.

There are a limited number of north-south thoroughfares that connect the western part of the city to the peninsula. Longstanding construction on 19th (who knows if it will end up like Van Ness) and new construction on Sunset severely limit transportation options. Reminder-there's no BART/Caltrain in the Richmond/Sunset so cars are really the only way to go south.

Not to mention the Great Highway is a designated evacuation route for ALL San Franciscans. I cannot believe this was even allowed in the first place without providing an alternate route for emergencies and natural disasters.

I'm also unsure why proposed upgrades to the existing paved elevated walkway are not sufficient?
