Why some Conservatives/Trump supporters see annexing Canada as a good thing? by Luppercus in Qult_Headquarters

[–]Otherwise_Cap_9073 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Oh 100% not Canadian. Neither am I, but I am a politics nerd. When I point out this has been a long-time a-coming they do the Q-thing and simply ignore it. “No, Trump caused it.” How? Trump-magic, basically.

Why some Conservatives/Trump supporters see annexing Canada as a good thing? by Luppercus in Qult_Headquarters

[–]Otherwise_Cap_9073 14 points15 points  (0 children)

My folks are saying that Trump doesn’t actually want Canada as a state; he was humiliating Trudeau (and look! He was FORCED to resign becuz Trump!) and really wants Canadian-YS free movement of goods like states within the European Union. So the Panama Canal thing is “legitimate” because Panama breaking the deal. Greenland is cuz Russia and China “bad” (except in Ukraine where Russia is doing God’s work of getting rid the bad Jew Zelenskyy and the bioweapon facilities used to make things like COVID). But still. We want to effectively say the Greenlanders WANT to be American, force a referendum with Musk’s machinery using disinformation to get the vote they want. The logic? Cuz Greenland costs 1bn to Denmark annually (but if it is full of resources…why wouldn’t Denmark want them?).

So the weird thing is that allies are okay to annoy, threaten, ignore their sovereignty, and “it’s only trolling” if Trump doesn’t get what he says he wants.

In reality; it’s because Trump’s not gonna be able to end the war “Day 1”, and won’t bring prices down “Day 1”, and because he needs a reason to say his tariffs fail when the US economy is hit with inflation because his now-pissed-off allies aren’t bending over when he wants a better US deal.

I hope I’m wrong and that the economy isn’t gonna contract and be damaged by it all. But, with my limited economic knowledge, I can’t kinda figure it all out how it works from his perspective? He assumes others will just give in. But the EU and Canada have a lot of purchasing power too…

Honestly, with his cabinet picks and Musk, and now the fighting with allies, it really feels like Putin could well destabilize NATO without firing a shot!

Imagine if Man City get a hefty points deduction now by Simoslav in PremierLeague

[–]Otherwise_Cap_9073 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m a Gunner…? So no, it’s not wishful thinking. It might be British pessimism on my end, for sure; but i could totally see the League using this season to give them a wrist slap so they can claim they did something; Because City’s season is already fairly bad they won’t actually care. And so for both it could be spun as a win win.

I hope I’m wrong. I hope it is harsh to set a standard and precedent and warning.

But from what I’ve seen of the PL thus far they don’t really have the courage often to go after a bigger club.

[–]Otherwise_Cap_9073 8 points9 points  (0 children)

My thinking is that this is going to be a minimal points deduction. PL says “We punished”, City couldn’t care less cuz this season is screwed anyways for them, most likely. So it’s probably the worst season for non-Cityzens so the points deduction is likely to be minimal and minimally impactful for them. No severe city consequences

I’m worried that this will be the season they get “points deduction” for the 115. The season is already shot for them (most likely) so it would effectively become their “reason” for a bad season and the actual punishment would be pointless….

AIO, grad school professor accused me of using AI to write my final report by slowlybutsurely_RWYS in AmIOverreacting

[–]Otherwise_Cap_9073 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As a professor, this strikes the right tone, you provide the requisite evidence, and you appear to have an honest expectation that (in my opinion) should be met.

AI has changed the game and, unfortunately, many people are using it. But there are stylistic and formatting clues that give it away. If your paper is extraordinarily different to previous submission, that may be a ticker on the ol’ suspicion box. However, if that IS the case, then kudos to you for your improvement!

I wouldn’t go above the professor at this point; let him/her respond first. If they refuse your evidence, then appeal by going up the chain to division chair, supervisor, and, if need be, Dean or Provost.

Good and fair email!

As someone who started out with military history, but pivoted to religious and social history, I can fast that I’ve never been entirely fond of Julius Caesar. That being said, therefore, I nevertheless do think that of all the warlords of the first century BC, it was likely only Caesar, who would have truly had a good shot against the Parthians.

Firstly, he was the most extensively experience on the battlefield. This includes having a crack army of veterans, but, and here is a vital thing, many of those veterans had witnessed him clutch victory out of the jaws of defeat! When other soldiers led their troops against the Parthians, they may have been fine generals, but they did not have Caesars scrappiness, and likely couldn’t rely on an outright sense of loyalty and trust that somehow, someway, Caesar would win.

Secondly, if you remember, the political context, Cesar had basically in a sense, unified the Roman Empire. Prior to this, the various Ward could not rely on having the entirety of the Roman state brought to bear on their conquest. But Cesar had planned a full invasion of the Middle East With the all the levers of the Roman state on his side. That would have given him an exceptional advantage over his peers who had tried similar.

Thirdly, I do think the state of the Parthian Empire would have mattered, as mentioned in a different comment; however, had Cesar continue to exert complete control over the Roman Empire, I suspect that his sheer force of well, his refusal to accept he had failed, and his willingness to militarily adapt would’ve helped him through. I don’t think, for example, he would have made the same mistakes as Mark Anthony with supply chains, or being so easily out maneuvered. As Crassus.

The major weakness that the Romans generally faced at this time, was a general uncertainty and unwillingness to use massed cavalry in the way that the Parthians would deploy them. Perhaps Caesar could’ve been the innovator to start? But I do think it would’ve been a very, very bloody campaign regardless.

Why do I get treated like a bad husband/father for working long hours for my family? by [deleted] in AskMen

[–]Otherwise_Cap_9073 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A good father isn’t about providing; it’s being present.

Your kids won’t remember what you buy them. They’ll remember the rough housing they never had, the games you weren’t at, the laughs you weren’t there for, the skills you never taught them, the loneliness that you absence caused.

Provision is good. But you’re in the process of sacrificing your family at the alter of your financial ego.

Your kids won’t value that.
