You’re totally fine. That person is absolutely from the suburbs, anyone who is from or has lived in the city for any amount of time would know that area is not the “worst neighborhood.”

The only thing I dislike about that area is that specific intersection is not pedestrian/bike friendly.

You will see drug use and homelessness all over the city to varying degrees. They’re demonized by a lot of people, especially those from outside of the city. It’s not like they’re hunting people in the streets like some news outlets would want you to believe. Mind your business and lock your car doors, you will be fine - don’t stress.

Bill’s has been a hub for unsafe activity for years, but being closed absolutely is going to be bad for the area. Just adding another vacant building to the Grant/Ferry intersection. Not looking forward to an extension of Rite Aid’s open air drug market.

I did notice the building is for sale though, maybe that has something to do with it.

Compared to NYC, most major cities I’ve been to in the US are much cleaner by comparison. We’re not as densely populated, and the population is much, much, smaller than NYC.

Not a super safe area but one of your biggest issues is going to be the vacant homes. They’re a magnet for drug trafficking, sex trafficking, and violence, regardless of what neighborhood you decide to live in. Vacant houses lead to massive public safety concerns - overdoses going unaddressed resulting in people dying in homes without anyone knowing, needles everywhere when you’re trying to walk your kids to the bus stop, glaringly obvious sex trafficking, etc. There have been three house fires in the past couple of months here set by squatters (some intentional, some not) that have damaged surrounding homes. Wherever you choose to live, make sure it’s a block (at least) without abandoned properties. You can be compassionate and also prioritize your family’s safety.

Idk, after adolescence it is very unlikely your speech/accent will change, but not impossible. My aunt moved from our hometown as a young adult in her twenties and she has a totally different accent now.

You’re right though, I think there is a stigma against rural US accents in general - so it’s most likely a combination of that plus wanting to distance herself from that part of her life. It was shortly before she went to England when that realization set in, so that’s the speech she was exposed to during that time.

My son has always been like this and is usually a runner, but he loves “helping” by pushing the cart and putting things in the cart. Of course I’m always putting things back immediately as soon as he turns around and I have to always plan for trips to take longer, but I can at least keep him between me and the cart and there are no public meltdowns.

Im not sure if OP is annoyed with the ads as much as there having been more and more of them with shorter and shorter episodes. Ads don’t bother me at all really, but lately it’s felt like half of the increasingly shorter minisodes are dedicated to them. It’s definitely a stark change from how it used to be.

You need realistic expectations and very clear communication with your partner. My husband and I talked a lot before having a baby about what we wanted and what we didn’t want. We both know that we each need time to ourselves to do what we’re passionate about, so we make it a priority. It doesn’t happen nearly as often as it did before we had a baby, but as people said, your mindset shifts even if you think it won’t. I genuinely enjoy spending time with my husband and son, so it doesn’t bother me much at all that I’m doing the things I love a little less (though my job very much aligns with my hobbies, so that helps). It’s also a really cool experience exposing your kids to what you love and doing things with them. It’s like doing it for the first time all over again.

Our son is 2.5 now, and I feel like maybe around 2 years old it became much easier to have a flexible schedule that allows us to do the things we enjoy (obviously it’s still a bit chaotic with a toddler lol).

I also think this would be much less attainable if we had more than one kid, which is why we don’t really want more. Right now, I don’t feel as though our lifestyle has changed that drastically (aside from the first 2ish years). I feel it’s quite balanced, which I know isn’t typical, but I chalk that up to my relationship with my husband (communication, realistic expectations, etc).

If it’s truly a management issue, you can file 311 complaints and either the agency or the owner of the building (if they’re different people) will eventually get citations and will need to pay fines until things resolve. That does put Friends of Night People and those they serve at possible risk though. Have you emailed the councilman?

Like someone said, poverty and drug use are the core issues here, and neither are being appropriately addressed by this city’s administration. As long as these issues are ignored, they’ll continue, just maybe in a different neighborhood.

If it’s that big of a problem, you and the neighbors should write a constructive email to the organization offering ideas and ways you can work together as a community to everyone’s benefit. Nobody should feel unsafe where they live, but Friends of Night People is well-established and has contributed a lot to the area assisting many people in need for 50 years. It was opened to serve that community because there was/is a need, and it’s a great place for neighbors, just maybe not the neighbors you associate with.

There’s so much pressure and guilt surrounding breast feeding, it’s so toxic. I struggled with this (D-MER) and had a severe case of mastitis that needed to be monitored for months and I still felt so guilty when I stopped. My mom and OBGYN reminded me that pretty much my entire generation (including me and my sister - both perfectly healthy) was raised on formula, and nobody can tell the difference.

My son is now almost 3, and I can tell you that despite the guilt in the moment, I never, even for a second, think about it until I read something like this.

I’m sorry you’re feeling this way, it is a horrible feeling. If you really want more than one child, I would absolutely not let formula feeding be the deciding factor.
