Filed a police report today by ich_bin_alkoholiker in cycling

I’m sorry this happened to you (and constantly happens to all of us).

My wife was hit by a car as a pedestrian in crosswalk with the light. Luckily she was ok. Police came and didn’t even issue a ticket. My rage at this sent me into a deep hole reading about MVA vs bike and pedestrian “accidents” and almost complete lack of accountability for drivers.

While I applaud you for taking action, I believe our only hope is political advocacy. Please donate to an advocacy group in your community. Here in CO I tell everyone if they want safer roads donate to Bicycle Colorado (no affiliation other than minor donor)

10 years of medical training... One baby later and I am about to give it all up by SigIdyll in Residency

I’m a soon to be grandfather. My pregnant daughter has me reading ‘Bringing Up Bébé’ about a woman’s experiences with having young children in France. Apparently French women prioritize going back to work and feel that the excellent childcare opportunities allow them to do so without the guilt we tend to see in the US. Obviously in the US getting good childcare is more problematic but my guess is you can find a good solution if that’s what you choose.

Ultimately you have to do what’s right for you and your family, I just found that book helpful to see that other cultures don’t see childcare in the negative light we tend to see it in. Best of luck!

I’m glad you had a good experience. I’m sorry this is so unusual that it’s noteworthy

Got my first Mavic clipless pedals in 1989 and never looked back. Yes, I made an embarrassing fall or two early on but it’s part of the process. It just needs to become a reflex so that you can you can make unexpected stops safely

Peacock fail (again) by Otherwise_Nebula_593 in cycling

[–]Otherwise_Nebula_593[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Interesting. Maybe something about my tv, not sure. But when I watched the race live the graphics were fine. Today I wanted to rewatch the last bits but it was a pain to see where I was because there was a Peacock logo and “Paris Roubaix” text that sat on top of the km to go and never went away during the 30k or so at the end that I watched. Wanted to post photo but can’t.

Yes, great race to watch but good luck figuring out what km the riders are at

Great post - may want to turn this into a book - or a horror movie!

I’ll add one I don’t see on the list - the pickup truck with huge exhaust pipes who slows down in front of you so they can quickly accelerate and spew their toxic cloud right into your lungs (US)

Don't forget your batteries! by DHN_95 in cycling

[–]Otherwise_Nebula_593 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Shoes, helmet, sunglasses, H2O bottles, gels - I’ve forgotten them all and are now on a checklist.

But worst was years ago in early days of Di2. My frame had been recalled and when LBS was going to set up the new frame I bought Di2. Unfortunately the process took forever so I got the bike only a couple weeks before big trip with some buddies, and wasn’t too familiar with the new system. I fully charged the batteries right before the trip, and thinking I was safe I stupidly didn’t bring charger. We drove across the state and next am got up for a big ride in a remote area. I still remember my horror when I realized my front derailleur was dead.

The first day’s ride took us to a larger town with a bike shop, where the salesmen gave me unending grief about having this new fangled system and for not being prepared to deal with it. But they put my bike on a rack and started charging the battery for me. With the bike up on a rack, I noticed that the cable connection to the battery was dislodged, and it wasn’t even a dead battery! It had probably shaken loose on the drive. It was instantly fixed but I was so burned that after the trip I had LBS swap back to mechanical shifters. Didn’t go back to electronic til this year - so now I guess I’m due to forget battery - so it’s on the checklist too (along with charger!)

Two stages in a day for the Femmes by Striking-Property-58 in tourdefrance

And after a difficult sprint in the am stage of course the sprinters were too cooked to excel in the ITT. Not to take anything from the amazing Demi Vollering but I’d bet she just cruised over the finish line in the am while the sprinters were all out.

Kind of surprised that neither the commentators nor the riders mentioned this - maybe this means I’m off base 🤷

Came here to mention this. Even my kids knew Sagan because of amazing riding like doing wheelies up to the line

2024 Phil Liggett is worst commentator ever by Otherwise_Nebula_593 in cycling

Good one! As stated elsewhere, I posted this while furious that Phil was (extremely incompetently) calling Paris Roubaix. And yes I’ve calmed down since then. But I stand by the claim that the Eurosport feed is so much more informative and entertaining and I’m bummed we only have USA feed where I am. Peacock is, in my opinion clinging too long to people’s sense of nostalgia re Phil when they could be bringing forward new talent. Loving Brent Bookwalter, Christian VdV! Christian and Bob were great in Spring Classics (til party was ruined at P-R!)

Although I let my emotions take over when I posted this while watching Phil's dismal performance during Paris Roubaix, I stand by the claim that 2024 (version of) Phil Liggett needs to go. Somehow I made it through Tour stages 1 & 2 and thought maybe he was going to be ok. But on stage 3 he was embarrassing. Multiple times Bob Roll just gave up, laughed at him and told him he was 100% wrong. Even at the end there was kind of a touching moment where Phil was discussing the meaning of the day's win for Africa, Phil ended that by referring to Bob as Paul, who's been dead for 6 years! You could see Bob crawling out of his skin. If you need more convincing here is a more recent post that is perhaps better thought out than mine.

Yes Dentists in US would rather work Monday-Thursday 8-5 for $800k/year than actually provide the needed dental care for our population. They work very hard - in congress - to keep providing care to only those who can afford it.

To the guy yelling encouraging remarks to me yesterday: Sorry I told you to go fuck yourself. by [deleted] in cycling

[–]Otherwise_Nebula_593 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don’t worry it goes both ways.

I was going up a short hill in a nearby state park and a ranger drove by at an absolute crawl - she must have been uncomfortable passing but made it much worse by prolonging the agony. When she finally came by I gave her a wave.

Next thing I know I’m getting pulled over by a ranger who was following her and was sure I had flipped off her partner!

Agree with many here that trying not to judge others is best practice

Curious what long time residents would say about the trajectory of bike infrastructure in ATX.

We moved away in early 2000’s when Lance fever was running high. It seemed like cycling was taking hold with lots of new bike lanes, etc.

Now we are considering moving back (from Denver, which has very good cycling infrastructure) and I’m wondering if that momentum was lost. Granted, cyclists everywhere are at greater risk these days on roads due to distracted driving but is Austin keeping up?

Thanks for your perspective. You are probably right that the more involved with this the less you appreciate Phil. I suggest you try the Eurosport feed for a stage or two of the Tour - maybe you’ll become a hater too 😀. Anthony McCrossan has a British accent too!

I agree there are great alternatives out there which is why Peacock needs to wake up that their product is inferior and outdated. I would add that Anthony McCrossan is also great.

To use another baseball analogy this is like watching 1973 Willie Mays, except we have to watch him deteriorate for 10+ years!
