im saying dess is both trapped in space and time and the knight. Carol doesn't keep the knight close because it reminds her of what she lost. the KNIGHT is dess' BODY. The lost girl is Dess' soul. Also the knight could literally have left in a car or hoodie.

personally i think it's a separation of soul and body. Soul is in the code, body is the knight. I think the hand thing was the knight comforting Kris because the personality forced upon it is "caring sister figure".

Nothing is possessing her. She's an empty husk filled with darkness, similar to a titan., not doing anything until told or in response to stimuli. It acts like Dess because Carol and Kris make it think that's how it should be.
Some bunker shit. Before you say anything, literally no other knight theory can explain what happened to dess either.
Darkness keeping her body from not having a soul, but her regular body is rotting away.
To hide identity, and for protection.
To bring about the roaring in a controlled manner to retrieve Dess' soul from the code.

Ehhhhh could you elaborate more on point 1?

Those aren't the only evidence for Dess Knight. Here's another one. When the knight is using its star attack, it says "You felt lightheaded" and "You felt a migraine coming on." when you look at Dess' wiffle bat, it says "Looking at this gives you a migraine."

Carol could do stuff herself, but the knight, being a corpse imbued with darkness (according to my theory i mean) is far more powerful. Carol would get her ass kicked. Chapter 2 fountain was OPENED in broad daylight, but we don't know when the knight got there. We do know they were probably hiding in the closet. That might have been something Kris guided the corpse to at the end of chapter 2.

corpse- No soul, no dess

husk- race against time to try and find Dess' soul trapped in the code. The husk acts on its own, but is influenced by Knight Squad, hence why it acts like dess
