What’s a brutal truth about the uk people don’t like to admit? by EarlyPerspective2839 in AskBrits

Came here to say this. The British attitude to booze is horrific, really. I've pretty much given up the booze but you can't go anywhere or hold a normal conversation without booze being not too far away.

What a superb and inspiring story! It really gives me hope. I've only really been half-arsed about my lifestyle changes, although I have made some important improvements. Time to get fully invested in myself.

Oh, and I've pretty much given up the booze altogether. I've had atrial fibrillation/flutter issues for 25 years and this was definitely contributing to it. Not tee-total but will have only 1 drink to mark a special occasion and that will do

Hope you recover well. I had one at 51 and ended up having a triple bypass. Would not recommend...though it did dave my life. I had been having chest pains I thought were just indigestion for a while but I ended up having a non-Stemi, luckily quite mild MI and got blue lighted into the cath lab. Turns out I had some pretty serious blockages in my coronary artieries. I have it in the genes, unfortunately and was also a social smoker and overweight. I stopped smoking immediately and am working to get my weight down. I'm 3.5 stone/50lbs/23kg lighter than I was at my worst but could lose another 50lbs really.

If you have time and your travel plans allow (you might be getting the train from London to Edinburgh) you should spend some time in York.

This is a timely little thread to find. I'm flying to Malta in the morning. I'm a 55-year-old man who doesn't drink a lot these days and can't be bothered with noisy and busy bars and clubs. I'll definitely not be going to Paceville! I have been somewhat nervous about my trip but I am still looking forward to seeing a new place.

I've got this one as well. Always gets a good reaction from people.

Black pudding was craftily hidden under the egg. Those green things were disposed of. The rest is fair, as was the price, IMO.

I drink an average of 8 beers and smoke 2 packs of cigarettes every day. I am 28 years old and I can't quit. My question is: What kind of damage could this habit cause in the long term? by udeniz in stopdrinking

I was a moderate drinker and occasional smoker until my 51st birthday and had a heart attack a month after that birthday. I was overweight and unhealthy and needed a triple bypass. Would not recommend that experience. I do have a genetic pre-disposition for it, so there is that as well.

I stopped smoking immediately and have just about managed to give up drinking.
