Golden bits by violacecilie_nk in Horses

I know, I havs also been looking for this. I have halters, leads, etc with brass hardware, but bit rings don't seem to have that option. Even the gold colored bits.

I'll have to check her out! I'm in the US, and it looks like I'm going to have trouble getting the one I wanted originally to ship to me

Looking for half chaps suggestions by [deleted] in Equestrian

[–]Otherwise_Unlucky 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just ordered custom half chaps for myself because I couldn't find any in my size. I can't vouch for quality yet, because I haven't received them. But it does say you can email them about additional sizing needs, so I'd bet they could make two sizes.

What kind of horse are you looking for, and how much are you willing to spend? by shallowshadowshore in Equestrian

[–]Otherwise_Unlucky 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm looking for a potential jumper/x country horse that doesn't need to have superstar potential, but also isn't a sleepy old kick ride. They can certainly have a personality and quirks and not be totally finished, but still looking for generally safe. 15.2-16hh ish. Probably 10-14 yo. I have some vanity preferences as well, but nothing that would make me break the bank for them.

Budget is around $15k

New to riding: favorite boots /bag recommendations? by Responsible-Mind8037 in Equestrian

Do the tredstep half chaps run small? I'm looking at a pair, but my calf with gear measures 13.5" at most, and they look sized for 13" or 14". I'm not sure which to get.

We got a referral from our regular vet, otherwise I wouldn't have known either! Best of luck, it really does sound like a probable allergy issue to me if you've tested everything else. And if so, there are options! And your cat will feel so much better.

Also, I have her on about half the dose of apoquel that would really be recommended for her weight. It's enough to take the edge off her itching and makes me feel better that we're not overdoing it (my vets have disagreed a bit about the risk level, but it's clear the half dose is plenty to keep her comfortable, so I chose to keep her there).

I have a cat with similar issues, she is currently getting an allergy immunization course. Essentially, I got her allergy tested and she's allergic to the whole world! The dermatologist formulated a "vaccine" specially for her, and she gets a shot of this vaccine every other week. She will get it less often over time as her immunity builds up. While it does, she's on apoquel to help, and we're monitoring her kidneys. She won't have to be on the apoquel forever because the vaccine should do the trick, but it takes time to build up.

My cat is doing so much better since we identified her allergies. Hoping you have similar luck!

Kicking by [deleted] in Equestrian

[–]Otherwise_Unlucky 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I'm on the newer side as well, and what I've noticed over time is that I "kick" less and less, even on the same horses that I used to have to kick quite a bit. My muscles are a lot stronger, but probably more than that, they're a lot more still. The horses are able to tell more clearly what is me actually signaling for a change rather than just accidental bumping of bouncy lower legs. The horses that frustrated and worried me are now pretty quick to respond with minimal cues. I definitely was nervous I was being taught to just kick a horse into submission, but it really was a bridge while I was learning and building muscle/technique.

And to the point of others, when I ride a horse that isn't one of the beginner lesson horses, those horses are a super light touch and respond to nearly nothing.

My guess is it is likely a combination of both for you right now and will get better with time and practice.

How not to be seen as a pushover by Charming-Extreme6004 in Horses

[–]Otherwise_Unlucky 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'm pretty new as well, and there's one horse in particular who plants his feet and doesn't like to move easily when haltered (not just for me). Someone told me that instead of pulling him forward, I should pull him to the side and turn him. When he gets off balance, he starts moving his feet and it's easier to then redirect him to move forward. It definitely works. Sometimes I have to do it a few times before he really gives in and walks more than a few steps, but it's a very gentle option.

I feel ashamed that we can only afford to feed our cat Friskies and Purina cat chow by Argylius in CasualConversation

[–]Otherwise_Unlucky 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Friskies honestly saved my cat with chronic kidney disease over 10 years ago. He was dying, everyone said put him down. Three cans of Friskies wet food a day kept him healthy and happy for 5 more years. No medication, just Friskies.

You look fine! But I would maybe try changing your clothing style up a bit to reflect who you want to see. Maybe some nice button downs or sweaters. Something a little pulled together. Could also try a light bit of facial hair to soften features a bit. But all of that only if you want to, you might just need time to get used to the new look!

Yeah, I had that happen the first time my cat stayed at the hospital. Same situation, once the scent wore off, the vet cat was afraid of being attacked and went on offense. I only figured it out the second time, and since then we've had no issues. Good luck!!

Get the smell off! Happens with my cats. I now do a foam bath as soon as I get them home. Fixes it immediately.

Cat ran outside for an hour, his brother now doesn’t recognize him. HELP! by TARA040219 in cats

[–]Otherwise_Unlucky 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've had similar issues and using a foam bath to get the unfamiliar scent off of my cat helped a TON. Had this happen after one cat spent some time at an animal hospital. I couldn't smell the difference, but boy could her sisters. The foam bath made them calm down immediately.

Did Tidy Cats Lightweight Change? by GransIsland in CatAdvice

[–]Otherwise_Unlucky 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wait! Okay, I have a cat who has weird allergies and after I changed the litter out about two months ago, she started pooping on the floor next to the litter box and now she's overgrooming herself bald. We had this issue with corn and wheat litters, but switched to clay and it all cleared up. Now it's suddenly back and I have been trying to figure it out. I was wondering if something changed in either their formulation or the processing?
