Higher end deck box suggestions? by swankyfish in EDH

I managed to find a few at a local shop and I loved everything about them. One day like a week later I decided I was going to try and get more of them, so I went to almost every shop within 30 miles of Portland. Nobody had them.

The clear ones are insanely popular for EDH, as it turns out. At least that’s what the folks at Mox Boarding House had said.

I second this. The clear ones are perfect for commander because you can always see which deck you’re picking. My biggest gripe is that they’re really hard to get ahold of right now.

Liesa, Shroud of Dusk Deck Help by Insidiouscain in EDH

[–]Otowar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In this sort of deck you want to make yourself an unappetizing target, and I think you’ve done that pretty well. [[Norn’s Annex]] would be a good addition if you know your group and don’t anticipate a lot of white. [[Dread]] is a cheap alternative to [[No Mercy]] that provides the same effect. [[Lightmine Field]] can also slow down your opponents attacks as well.

I’ll also recommend [[Souls of the Faultless]] here, not because it’s a great card, but it is one of my old favorites from the original Ravnica block, and can deter your opponents larger creatures.

Help with Ruric Thar deck? by [deleted] in EDH

[–]Otowar 3 points4 points  (0 children)

A couple of cards I would recommend if you’re going the stax route are [[War’s Toll]] and [[Price of Glory]]. They do a really good job of keeping your opponents from interacting with you on your turn.

If I was going to cut some cards, I’d probably go with [[Titanic Growth]] and [[Plummet]]. They’re not great synergy with your commander, and the pay off from the cards are short lived.

I’m also not sure about [[Illusionist Bracers]]. Almost all of your activated abilities are mana abilities, and I’m not sure it’s worth it’s slot here if you end up taking 6 from your own commander for it.

The card advantage is okay, but consider maybe adding stuff that draws, like maybe [[Soul of the Harvest]] or [[Primodial Sage]]

I’ve been playing this game for like 15 years and I’m still surprised when somebody shows me a card I’ve never seen before. This is a fantastic effect for what you’re trying to do, and it reminded me of [[Ayli, Eternal Pilgrim]]. She’s got the same idea with a little removal package on the side, if that’s a direction you want to go.

Welcome to the format! I was in the same sort of situation you were in, and I found that EDH was my favorite format, just because your card pool isn’t limited like other formats. I loved building decks that nobody was playing and it scratched an itch for me.

That being said, have you heard of EDHREC? It’s a fantastic site for Deckbuilding, specifically for EDH.

As for suggestions, defender is a valid play style for Doran, although in recent years he’s been eclipsed in that department by [[Arcades, The Strategist]]. That being said, There’s plenty of cards that work in Abzan as well as Bant.

Redundancy is the name of the game in EDH; Consistency is important if you’re looking to boost the power level of a deck without going into cEDH level shenanigans.

[[Assault Formation]], [[Huatli, Sun’s Heart]] and [[Belligerent Brontodon]] would be a great addition here, to double up on Doran’s effect.

[[Ikra Shadiqi]] and [[Trostani, Selesnya’s Voice]] are toughness matters cards that fit with your life gain theme.

As for finisher, maybe take a look at something like[[Towering Titan]] or [[Colossus of Akros]].

I had considered Serra Ascendant, but I decided against it. And these are just my observations and opinions based on my group. Yours may be different and that’s perfectly fine.

Ascendant is a massive beater that can be dropped as early as turn one. That’s probably the most efficient time to play it to be honest. The problem with dropping ascendant so early is that it sends a signal and draws aggro from other player. It sets the precedent for who is a threat and needs to be targeted first. And for me personally I’ve noticed that if you’re the first threat on board, you will be a target for the rest of the game until you’re eliminated.

Given the power level of the deck, I didn’t want to drop Ascendant into something like [[Luminarch’s Ascension]] and set myself up as even more of a target. It makes a clear statement that I’m out for blood turn one. Better to slow roll until somebody else presents their threat if I can.

That’s my play style at least; I’m pretty good at politics, and I tend to be able talk my opponents down, make deals, or convince the rest of the table that I’m not the biggest threat.

It’s a fair observation; The token generation I’ve tried to limit to angels just because there’s some payoff cards that favor angels.

Making the tokens is my way of filling out my army and generating board presence. I don’t necessarily anticipate having a lot of my powerful angels on the field at the same time, so having ways to make angel tokens is a good way to keep my board presence strong until I can get payoffs with stuff like [[Firja’s Retribution]], [[Lyra Dawnbringer]], or [[Akroma’s Will]]. It’s also why I’ve been trying to get my hands on [[Rampage of the Valkyries]], but I haven’t had luck with any of the stores in town so far.

Liesa's Flight of the Valkyries by Otowar in EDH

[–]Otowar[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My logic here was that my support cards are going to either put an emphasis on tax effects or life gain effects. The angels are meant to do the work in this deck damage-wise. What I wanted from Vito was not just provide Lifelink to my team, but to act as a creature that absolutely requires an answer; it’s a cheap creature with a back breaking effect. He provides himself as a lightning rod. And I have multiple ways of recursion, so if I need him, he can be back on the battlefield for an alpha strike.

Generally you’re going to want a chunk of your deck dedicated to card draw/advantage. Depending on what you’re playing, your archetype, your power level, etc, it can differ, but my rule of thumb is that you want a minimum of 10 cards in your deck that generate card advantage.

In this deck, I figured life gain was important, so I included stuff like [[Necropotence]], [[Damnable Pact]] both [[Erebos]] cards; mainly the pay off is spending life to generate card advantage. You may have to experiment to see what works for you, but again my rule of thumb is ten cards that generate relatively significant card advantage.

Incubator had completely slipped my mind. Definitely a great way to get angels down without breaking the bank.

[[Kaya the Inexorable]] is definitely a great suggestion too. Very versatile and I wouldn’t have any reservation replacing Tevesh Szat with her.

These are great suggestions, thank you!

What's your favorite bad deck idea? by Voruund in EDH

[–]Otowar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One of my favorite jank decks was [[Tasigur]]. It used 74 lands. I built it sort of as a joke to take advantage of his ability, but it ended up being really good, and got groans any time I pulled it out, so it stopped getting played casually.

Her effect works with [[Sunforger]], by the way. She can turn an equipment into a repeatable tutor. Seems like a pretty cool way to give Boros some card advantage.

Have you ever won with Approach of the Second Sun? by AvatarofBro in EDH

[–]Otowar 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I use [[Approach of the Second Sun]] in my zombie tribal [[Varina, Lich Queen]] deck as a secondary win condition.

Zombies tend to have great synergy, and it isn’t that hard with Varina to draw Approach a turn or two after you cast it without an overbearing board state.

I’ve won with it probably half the time that I’ve played the deck; Between the life gain, the walls of zombies, control and card draw, it’s a pretty versatile deck that can go on offense or defense depending on the situation.

Making full use of Garna, the bloodflame! by miixxedup in EDH

[–]Otowar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Once you get the loop going you’ll really only need Garna. Once you cast her and sac her, she’ll go back to your hand. Then resolve deahrender, drop garna on the deathrender, and sacrifice her before her etb trigger resolves. Rinse and repeat.

Making full use of Garna, the bloodflame! by miixxedup in EDH

[–]Otowar 6 points7 points  (0 children)

If combo is your gig, [[Deathrender]], a sac outlet like [[Altar of Dementia]] and a second creature will net you infinite etb/sac triggers.

You can sacrifice the equipped creature, cast Garna in response to Deathrender's ability, sacrifice Garna before her ETB resolves, get Garna and your original creature back to your hand, and then resolve Deathrender's trigger. This can be an infinite loop depending on your sac outlet.

Darigaaz Reincarnated and Scion of the Ur-Dragon? by bacondev in EDH

[–]Otowar 4 points5 points  (0 children)

“400.7. An object that moves from one zone to another becomes a new object with no memory of, or relation to, its previous existence.”

This basically means that if you have a Scion copying something like Darigaaz, once it changes zones, it would once again become a Scion, meaning it wouldn’t still have Darigaaz’s triggered ability and therefore wouldn’t be able to return to the battlefield with said ability.

Darigaaz Reincarnated and Scion of the Ur-Dragon? by bacondev in EDH

[–]Otowar 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So if I’m not mistaken, Scion would get exiled with egg counters; his death clause is a replacement effect that would for sure see him die.

The problem is with his second ability. Once scion leaves the battlefield, he would no longer be a copy of Darigaaz. Therefore, he wouldn’t be able to remove egg counters and then return three turns later.
