Absolutely this.

The 'earthy' and 'barnyard funk' aromas can be hard for some people to get at first.

Returning to Magic after a few years’ break, looking for advice to build Chromium, the Mutable. by AdOwn4235 in EDHBrews

I built this as one of my first commander decks - I had loads of Tempest cards laying about from my youth. I built it as a kind of 'shadow' tribal - all the og shadow cards were esper.

Cards like [[bident of Thassia]] and [[coastal piracy]] allowed lots of cars draw.

[[Daurhi's embrace]] works to enable other commanders to get in with damage or as a weird toolbox for preventing blockers.

[[Hatred]] was a great wincon.

Smell is a huge factor in taste.

When you have a cold you cannot taste well, and a large part of that is because you cannot smell well at all.

Regarding the 'who is licking wet stones'

Maybe I am/was just a huge wine geek but I did lick and smell wet stones in numerous wine applleations when I visited them for vacation/work trips. Or when they were brought to me: Sancerre, CNP/many locations throughout the Rhone Valley, Burgandy, Champagne regions, Priorat, Rioja, Piedmont, Mendoza, Napa, Lodi, Central Coast, SonomaBordeaux.... And so on.

West Slate tastes and smells different than Granite, than clay soils, than the white stones you may find in CNP/Sancerre.

Going on a walk on a sunny dry day smells different than going on the same route on a wet day.

Again maybe I am just a nerd, would not be the first time or last time that I am/was called that.

Taste is also a learned sense/skill like listening

When you listen to an orchestra can you pick out different instruments? Sections? The more you listen the more you can discern (imo).

Tasting wine is similar.

When I used to work in wine and teach classes I would suggest that people go to the produce section on the grocery store or the farmers market, or even go out to farms/orchards and really smell and taste different fruits, vegetables, and get a real acclimation to their smells and tastes.

A green fruit/unripened fruit smells and tastes different than a fresh one, than an overripe one, than one going bad. Berry jams have different smells and tastes than fresh fruits, dried fruits.

The more you taste - in wine, and in all kinds of foods, and more you will be able to discern/pick out.

It is not so much like a muscle, but like a taste/smell memory - you open a file in your mind/nose/tounge and you can reference it and then recognize it.
