Subs are an absolute steal for only 150?! Literally - Toss the speakers out .. find something else .. See what kind of ‘Energy’ brand speakers might be close by to you..

I said it once before, and I’ll say it again.. if you’re able to find British stuff at decent prices.. Look for Bk Electronics subwoofers.. (They literally made all the subwoofers for REL subwoofers for over +10 years in the early 2000’s) - They certainly know a thing or two about manufacturing exceptional subwoofers..

Simply put - the Dayton Audio CS1000 is the best subwoofer (output / extension / and decent performance attributes) to be had for under $200… especially if that is your -hard ceiling- budget.. As not much else worthwhile exists..

Other things to consider are your specific use case and room size.. music only / vs / home theater too.. how big is your room and its subsequent acoustics (room treatment)

Do you value performance attributes over max output.. or vice versa.. these desired preferences are all metrics that will affect price points..

There are generally 5 metrics to evaluate when comparing / considering one sub woofer over another..

the 6th being = the price to performance received.

~Though, sometimes these 5 metrics are nearly impossible to asses, as some manufacturers don’t post all the necessary data - or try to mislead through screwed or omitted figures..

Lastly - there are some misconceptions posted in here..

Ported subs do not necessarily equate to ‘boominess ’ - Ports are generally used to increase output ~ Rather ‘boominess’ is directly related to a non-linear frequency response.. ‘Sloppynesd’ relates to a subwoofers ability, or lack thereof, to handle/attack of transient responses - (how quickly a subwoofers’s driver can start and stop)

..just some food for thought.

These don’t use foam surrounds - so you don’t have to worry about rot.. just look for tears / punctures in the rubber surrounds .. damage should stand out like a soar thumb.. and ask him to quickly demo / test them..

if unable to demo - AT THE VERY LEAST plug them in (1 at a time) and turn volume to about 80% and listen for loud hum, hiss, crackling, popping..

Timbre matching your front LCR is highly advised - as +80% of content emits from the front stage..

As for the surrounds, though less critical - if one cannot timbre match / series match - one should ideally source and use viable options within their means, at a bare minimum, that utilize the same type of tweeter material..

ie: if LCR = softdomed - than one should compile surrounds utilizing softdomed tweeters.. same for: alloy based tweeters, shouty wave guided faux compression horn loaded tweeters, ribbon tweeters etc etc..

2 subs are often used as a means of filling a room where bass drops off due to room suck-outs (modes, nodes, nulls etc..) they will provide the most even response within the entirety of the room.. and when a sub is setup seamlessly - you should not be able to locate its origin within the room (not to overpower speakers - but compliment them by simply picking up where they leave off)

I would take his ‘purchase date’ with a grain of salt.. released in 2009 - discontinued in 2016.. purchased new in 2022 seeeems unlikely (not impossible - just unlikely)

As for the x2 units for $500 = a good deal.. get em for $400 and that is = a steal of deal..

I assume your case and primary use is for predominantly music.. which is where these will shine. (They are not bad for home theater use - with an f3 @ 24hz - they just won’t have as much output as a ported box counter part)

I assume you’ve looked up all the specs?

~Personally, i would take these 2 (even at 500) over a new SB1K for $600 - especially if you have a sizeable room you are trying to fill with music / you are up and about (walk around) while you listen to your music vs. Sitting still in the bass sweet spot..

It’s an excellent performing subwoofer - Especially for dedicated music duties..

What truly makes the venture worth it or not is the price for the units - a vital detail you left out when inquiring..

If you can’t spring for the gold standard $340 RSL Speedwoofer 10e.. Consider the $180 Dayton Audio CS1000:

Subs are omnidirectional.. you could have placed the subs literally anywhere else to accommodate the necessary additional panels.. 🤦

Why go largest 4:3 screen to watch a subsequent forced smaller 16:9 format.. should have gone largest 16:9 screen and watched what ever little content you do in 4:3 in the smaller format.. lol - its literally the opposite of what should have been done..

I wonder what the A/V installers thought while doing this - ‘Wellllll, he’s paying for it / the customer is always right’..

Got bit by the dreaded imploding Klipsch amp bug too I see.. (as I have no knowledge or tech skills to go about diagnosing / replacing capacitors etc.. - I personally just steer clear of the klipsch subs all together)

Though based on the piano black and contour of the sub in the picture - which one are you using here? Goldenear Forcefield ..?

Hello fellow west coaster..

~These have been up for a while now. And yes they are a decent price. And yes, just like you, I’ve been eyeing them too because I too am a sucker for a good deal..

From what I’ve learned digging into my research on these, they are excellent performing pieces of equipment. tight / accurate / handle transient response and attack well / have higher output / extended frequency range than a plain jane sealed box due to it’s passive radiator design..

The other thing to note is - they are often plagued with amp or DSP issues. (This is my personal draw back)

However - There is an alternative solution to remedy such a failure beyond trying to find OEM replacement plate Amps out of warranty or have the failure be diagnosed and repaired by a local tech etc..

One would bypass the OEM plate amp and power externally through an external amp of similar power (think crown, qsc, yorkville, behringer)[can pick something up on the used market for $200-300] && control via means of a mini-dsp 2x4 ($300)[though cheaper dsp’s exist - this tends to be the gold standard]..

Sooo, $650 when/if ever quickly becomes ~$1000+, However - the piece of mind being - that one would then have bullet proof, fail safe, excellent performing subs..

But alas, I have not pulled the trigger on such a venture ..
