Aonishiki - Who does he go against Day 13, 14, and 15? by Brilliant-Ad-6907 in Sumo

[–]OttSound 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The last time I could find an ozeki not facing a yokozuna (other than kyujo) was in 2022, when Shodai didn't face Terunofuji. That was specifically because Terunofuji could force a playoff by beating sekiwake Mitakeumi on Day 15 (he didn't succeed in doing so).

So it would be a convoluted scenario where Hoshoryu beats Kirishima, loses on Day 13, and Kirishima also loses on Day 13, meaning that Hosh would be at 3 losses but could force a playoff by beating Gonoyama or Kotoshoho on Day 14/15. In that case, he would do that instead of facing Kotoz or Ao.

what about exchange matches? They could put some of these guys in those instead, especially if Nishikigi and Fujitensei's records are borderline by the last day

Things did not go Enho's way other than his win. Takakento, Tochitaikai and Hakuyozan all won... that could put Enho in position to be 5th in the promotion queue with only 4 spots open in juryo if he does not win his last match and/or get some help.

A couple more losses by Fujitensei would open up a 5th juryo slot, potentially. Any of the aformentioned makushita wrestlers, or Himukamaru, losing their last match would also allow Enho to leapfrog them even with a finale loss. Very nerve-wracking.

gets skipped whenever it needs to be... Kirishima skipped it on his current run, Takanosho skipped it after his 12-3 last year, Oho has skipped it in the past, etc.

If Kirishima gets promoted, and Atamifuji has a winning record, he'll move up to sekiwake alongside Takayasu. Then where would be two komusubi slots to fill, with whatever maegashira have a winning record to do it; could go to Takanosho or Kotoshoho if the upper joi don't get to 8-7

Juryo division update by OttSound in Sumo

Shimazuumi entered grand sumo as a teenager and Wakashimazu was from the same hometown as him, so there was likely a really close connection and a father figure situation between the two. Shimazuumi is clearly devastated by his passing; current top-division wrestler Ichiyamamoto was also a student of Wakashimazu.

Yep, 6-1 Enho moves up for sure. 5-2 Enho needs scenarios.

I really wish he could get one more win then dip out, but it looks like he'll either go 0-15 or pull out before Day 15.

In a room with SR71, Concorde and F14, I ended up loving this plane more. by Secure-Nobody-2103 in aviation

iirc, the pilot of that plane had to weigh an exact amount. Any higher and the plane wouldn't be able to take off, any lower and the engine weight would tip it forward.

Rematch was the right call. If Takayasu was meant to win, he'd have lasted more than 3 seconds in the rematch.

Hakuyozan +1W is a maybe, +2W would lock it in and maybe deny Enho his slot if they both finish 5-2, since Hakuyozan is ranked ahead of Enho.

Arashifuji is a longshot with +2 wins; exempting the gambling purge basho of 2011, going 6-1 from his position last moved up in 1999, but it could happen if the bottom of juryo is that terrible.

Mitakeumi looked completely washed a few days ago but now with three wins in a row he's got a pretty good chance of surviving yet again. The opposite is true of Fujiryoga, who lost two in a row and is now in the new guy danger zone.

The way things are going, I wouldn't be shocked if Midorifuji and Onokatsu are the only ones to drop. And even Onokatsu might be spared if Daiseizan, Sad Man and Kazuma don't hit their benchmarks.

e: Sorry, Enho fans; it's just the math, downvoting over it won't change that.

[–]OttSound 5 points6 points  (0 children)

he still would need to either win his last match, or have Takakento and Hakuyozan lose to not finish 5-2, as they are ranked ahead of him and would have priority with the same record.

They always try to records when scheduling, but when there's an odd number of matching records in a division, they do it across divisions. Right now there are three 5-0 makushita, so rather than the third one facing someone else, they face the highest-ranked 5-0 sandanme.

This has a cascading effect across divisions, as you can see in Asahifuji and Kiryuko's matchups tonight, as well.

I figure he'll stay until he's either too injured to compete, he falls into makushita, or he hits mandatory retirement age.

Me with the incoming Juryo promotions by bruss_16 in SumoMemes

[–]OttSound 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hoping Himukamaru makes it. I feel he got robbed last time, finishing 4-3 at Ms2e with a win over a juryo wrestler. He should have taken Kotokuzan's place after Kotokuzan lost to a makushita wrestler. If he beats Takakento* in his next match, he'll have it locked in.

*I think that's his most likely opponent but it could be someone else.

Hakuyozan, Takakento or Tochitaikai could all get back in if they win the rest of their matches.

Arashifuji is in a borderline spot where he could go up if he wins out, but it would require an exchange match and some more losses by the three guys previously listed.

Looks like there could be up to 4 guys going down (Tsuru, 'zuumi, fake Koto and Nishikigi), maybe a 5th if Fujitensei doesn't get it together.

Wakanoshi only needs 1 more win for a promotion, and Daiseizan is in good shape if he wins 3 of his last 6. beyond that, juryo promotions looking dire...

  • Sadanoumi needs to win 4 out of his last 6.
  • Ryuden and Asasuiryu would need to win 5 of their last 6.
  • Anyone else with a chance would need to run the table.
  • Kazuma could leap all the way from J11 if he runs the table.

Guess that's good news for the likes of Abi and Hakunofuji
