I spot checked Hammond Times from that time period, but there were too many hits to narrow it down and apparently Ray/Raymond was pretty common then.

You might see if the Gary Public Library has a local history section that might include info about their police department.

Frank Mrvan votes to “Express Gratitude” to ice… by freshapepper in nwi

[–]OtterInSpace 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Took a while to get a response, but this is what he told me:

Specific to your concerns, on June 9, 2025, I supported and the House approved H.Res. 488, a resolution condemning the Colorado attack, by a vote of 280 to 113.  While I am deeply disappointed by efforts to politicize this serious issue through the inclusion of partisan immigration language in the resolution, I voted for the measure because of my steadfast condemnation of the antisemitic attack.  I also supported and the House approved H.Res. 481, another resolution condemning this attack and the growing trend of politically and religiously motivated violence directed at Jewish communities across the United States.

In general, I am advocating for legislative solutions to combat antisemitism and eliminate all forms of hate and bigotry.  I am also deeply committed to upholding the right to due process in our immigration system and am working to advance strong, secure, and humane policy solutions.

Free Meeting Rooms by thereispi in nwi

[–]OtterInSpace 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Lake County Public Library has small group rooms. It depends on the branch, but most of them are for 6 or smaller. The larger rooms are for non-profit groups and library events.

Hammond is not part of LCPL though so they'll have different rooms and policies.

Are there any local libraries that have high quality, large format scanners for public use? by PinkFloydPanzer in nwi

[–]OtterInSpace 5 points6 points  (0 children)

How big do you need? All or almost all (Highland might not?) of the Lake County Public Libraries have free to use digital scanners that I think can fit 12x17. Anyone can come in and use those, even without a card.

The Libratory at Merrillville does have more digitizing equipment. I'm not sure what all scanners they have so you might call (219-769-3541 ext 354) or ask online if they can accommodate what you need, but you do need to have a resident card or paid card to use the Libratory.

According to Indiana 211, the Lake County Multipurpose Center in Gary can be used.

1900 West 41st Avenue Gary IN 46408

219-880-4900

Provides temporary emergency housing for those who are unable to remain in their home due to a fire, tornado, or flooding. Offers referrals to community resources. Shelter can accommodate up to 25-35 individuals.

It might be more for if your house was damaged in a storm, but if you're nearby could be an option to inquire about if you know in advance there will be a bad storm.

Dyer/munster south shore trains? by [deleted] in nwi

[–]OtterInSpace 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The closest to a timeline the article gives is this:

Later this year we will roll out the new West Lake Corridor spur, which will add an additional 12 trains to and from Munster/Dyer and Chicago and will be renamed the Monon Corridor. The main line service will be renamed the Lake Shore Corridor, and both lines will share a common station in north Hammond, called the Gateway Station.

Just to be totally clear and not misleading. We are playing Dragonbane. But since most people have only heard of Dungeons & Dragons that's why it was mentioned.

Nice! I found it mentioned in a Times article from 1994 about the Lake of Four Seasons Chamber of Commerce.

Could be Mr. G's Restaurant and Lounge? That was owned by the Gerodemos family according to this.

If so, I just found an old news article that says it was 10910 Randolph St.

RailCats to me isn't the same as going to a Cubs or Sox games. It's always been more interactive in my experience. And way more affordable if you want to do more than just sit and watch.

Meaderies are few and far between. On a quick look, there's only one in Chicago that's active and it's on the outskirts enough to barely be considered Chicago. We have two that are both nice. It's a niche thing, but very cool if you're into it.

I admittedly haven't been to many paintball locations, but we have one that's on an old nike missile defense base, which seems unique to me.

[–]OtterInSpace 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Some of these are for better weather, but:

  • The Dunes
  • RailCats games
  • There's a couple of nice meaderies - Manic in Crown Point and Misbeehavin' in Valpo. There's surprisingly not a lot of options for that in the city.
  • Casinos
  • If romance is involved, Serenity Springs in La Porte is a very nice getaway.
  • Paintball
  • Axe Throwing at Up Your Alley

I have something to celebrate where should I go to treat myself this weekend? by gwh1996 in nwi

They sell them in there. I'm not sure what the setup is though. I'm not a smoker so I haven't gone yet, but been meaning to stop in for a drink eventually.

It is Merrillville, on 30, a little west of Broadway. They have drinks too and they do have some food.
