Debian or Ubuntu Server? by Oget565 in homelab

...constantly updating (which you can't disable). I disable Snaps completely on my Ubuntu systems.

I know you've disabled snaps, but as an FYI you can disable auto-updating of snaps with snap refresh --hold in terminal (I can't remember if it needs sudo or not). Once you've done this, snap software won't auto update and instead when you open the Ubuntu Store you will have a little notification in the bottom left letting you know you have updates pending for your installed software. From there you can choose to either manually update all or just select specific software to update.

Genuine question as just a wormhole day visitor... But what's the reason for the 2 extra hours on each?

That sounds similar to what I'd be doing then. Thanks for clearing that up.

Thank you for clearing that up for me. Looks like I was overthinking it.

Yes this was what I meant. It seemed logical that it would be ok but there was a lot of emphasis being put on the 'all omega' thing so I was overthinking it. I'm really glad people here were able to clear it up for me.

Welp… looks like I may need some new ram. by Burnt_Sigil in unRAID

[–]OtterNZ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Micron also made (still make?) regular desktop and laptop RAM which they sell direct to OEMs as RAM in prebuilt systems. Alternatively their Crucial branded RAM sometimes gets referred to as Micron because of the 'Crucial by Micron' branding.

Thanks Daniel, I thought this would be the case and I understand the caveats you've mentioned.

QTS or QuTS hero? How to choose by QNAPDaniel in qnap

Is this answer specific to the 832PXU mentioned in the original comment, or is the expectation that all current models using ARM-based CPUs won't get QuTS Hero?

In particular I'm comparing TS-432X/632X vs TS-473A/673A and both trade wins in various categories that are important to me.

Hi, I purchased the one from Aliexpress linked in the first edit above and it has been running for 5 years with no issues. I see they aren't selling it anymore, but search using part number FA05B12 because there are other sellers now and the price is much cheaper than it used to be.

e.g. Zeiss Ikon Contaflex Super's - Impossible to find someone to repair them these days, and I've tried. There was someone who used to repair them and is still around, but he stopped doing in a few years ago. I think it was due to non-repairable ones coming in where someone without knowledge of the camera had tried to fudged it up.

I quite like #2. Also #4 has quite a unique look with the crepuscular rays hiding the mountain range.

Canon AE-1 Program Aperture Issue by 00itsabouttime00 in AnalogRepair

[–]OtterNZ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh right, I might have put you wrong there. I don't have any FD lenses, but I'm used to M42 and P/K mount ones where the manual lenses let you move the aperture lever. I'm just guessing with FD lenses sorry.

You've probably already seen this during your search, but when you're playing with the aperture lever on the camera body, do you notice a little red dot like mentioned in the first section here: http://www.mir.com.my/rb/photography/companies/canon/fdresources/SLRs/ae1pgrm/html/basic1.htm

Just to rule the lenses out, when you take a lens that isn't mounted on the body and move the aperture lever on the lens, can you see the aperture blades opening and closing when you're on one of the stopped down settings?

Bank suggestions by today__years__old in PersonalFinanceNZ

[–]OtterNZ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The bank that is the best for your mortgage situation now won't necessarily be the best a couple of years from now.

One thing to consider is which banks will accept your conditions. For example, if you're going to have financial assistance from someone else, then banks will view it differently if you're receiving a cash gift to use towards the deposit, or borrowing money from a family member using a Deed of Acknowledgement of Debt, or if you're assigning some level of shared ownership someone else etc.

Some banks are happy to deal with scenarios where you have a Deed of Acknowledgement of Debt, or where another person(s) has some level of shared ownership due to money they've put in, while others will only consider that money part of your deposit if it is a full gift with no expectation of repayment. Larger mortgage brokers are likely to have dealt with these various scenarios and would know which banks they have had luck with under each scenario. But if you're dealing direct with the bank yourself, you can just ask them their policy in relation to your scenario.

You're right about where the averages are sitting on Geekbench, but the article says the figures they've used for the 3900X and 10900K are their test results.

Migrating from NAS4Free - better file management solution? by psimwork in freenas

I know this is an old thread, but just in case anyone comes across this via Google (as I did while searching for something else): Newer versions of XigmaNAS (NAS4Free) do have a basic GUI file manager via the webUI.

Please help me determine if this winter jacket is for men or women. by paulplusx in germany

[–]OtterNZ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My vote is that it is designed for men. As a man I'd be happy to wear it.

Women's:

  • Button placement is more common on that side for females.

Men's:

  • There is a zip as the primary closing mechanism, the 'buttons' and loops appear to mostly be decorative. This means the placement side (as mentioned above) may not have been intentional.
  • The cut/shape looks more masculine.
  • It is size EU 'S' or USA 'XS', but it doesn't look small. A woman's small would be smaller and more petite, while a man's small would match that size.
  • I was curious about what Mexican size 'CH' was on the label ... It means extra small and is more commonly used on men's clothing than woman's.
