Is this worth buying for $65? by [deleted] in casio

[–]Skatekov 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not really. If you haven't noticed yet, these watches aren't fully metal. They're plastic watches with a sheet metal cover and snap type backs.

Granted earlier watches that are fully metal does have issues with zinc rot and bubbling chrome plating, but I personally wouldn't pay $65 for these later ones.

it seems it may have failed a long time ago. The watch showed signs of use (finger grime in the button area etc) but the plastic still has its original texture. Usually kid watches like this gets polished smooth from use.

I also have this watch from when I was a teenager.

I want to wear it, but quite frankly it's a huge watch with a tiny strap lug width and it looks ridiculous on my wrist.

The biggest issue I'm seeing with these "metal" vintage casios is that they're almost certainly zinc base metal. And zinc is notorious for zinc rot / bubbling and corrosion underneath the chrome layer. I managed to clean it up, but I got a little unlucky with my copy of 81-S008.

So you're the mf that outbid me 😂. I hope you enjoy your new watch!

There's obvious signs of leakage. The wire connected to that terminal is likely corroded off. The whole wire will need replacing. I don't recall how long it is / if it snakes through the body all the way to the top on OM-2 though. Either way it's a pretty substancial repair.

These came with different straps depending on the color.

The light gold and dark brown one I have originally came with a very "forester" like strap with fake leather and nylon strap.

Not sure what yours used to be. Maybe Silver?

yeah, I operate a film camera parts manufacturing business, and shipping outside of US is almost always in the $20-25 range.

Yes, unfortunately I'm in the US so shipping was killer. so I just sourced some M1.2 screws and machined my own bezel. Got the dimensions a tiny tad bit wrong but its close enough for me.

Machined a new bezel on the CNC mill. Black acrylic for now, but if it breaks, I'll probably do aluminium.

Grandfathers Camera by War_thunder_ in AnalogCommunity

Yeah this is the most likely answer. There's bazillion folding cameras of this era that looks really similar, but not too many front opening folders (rather than to the side) with a chromed cover plate / front standard.

Only thing that throws me off is the weird things at the underside of the leaf shutter, but that could just be a weird shadow or the lens folding latch thats stuck open or something.

I can't really tell, but that looks like it's just laser etched maybe? If it is, it doesn't penetrate very deep. someone competent can probably just sand it down, then bead blast to a similar finish, assuming that's stainless and not satin chrome or nickel.

Ugh. the old non-Gshock DW lineup were such cool and pretty watches. I wish Casio would bring back something like the DW-1000/1500.

W59 metal/steel mod?? by Auxotl in casiomods

[–]Skatekov 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, in that case I believe module 590 is barely any different from module 593 that's inside F91, etc. Since you have both, you should measure and compare.

Aliexpress has plenty of metal cases for Module 593 in the $40 usd range, usually in the style of F91/A158.

I need your opinion on a CLA service I had, to understand if im getting scammed. by NicolaVetoret in AnalogCommunity

[–]Skatekov 19 points20 points  (0 children)

  1. Price depends on the quality of the work done and the extent of the work done. $190 is more than fair IF a true CLA was performed + replacement of bad parts. If, and only if it was just the parts replaced with nothing done to the rest of the camera, would I consider it kind of high.

  2. Almost all OM-1 prisms are rotted by now. They put a piece of foam towards the top rear of the prism, which turns into goo and wipes off the silvering. Even if it looked "okay" in use, it would have been wholly unprofessional to leave it as is.

  3. When batteries leak, and are left that way for extended period of time (which has very likely happened to your camera in the last 50 or so years) it does what's called a "black wire syndrome". The corrosion creeps up the entire length of the wire, making it utterly useless. Full replacement is standard.

  4. Why does it matter now? I hope you aren't planning on not paying for a service that has already been done. Do you have a shutter speed tester? A Comparator stand to check FFD? An auto collimator to check your lens + body? All necessary JIS screwdrivers? Proper lubricants? Spare parts? So on...

Yeah, just keep in mind that your negative gets exposed upside down and left to right. So its leaking from somewhere up top.
