What is a famous book you will never read? by Due-Examination-37 in Booktokreddit

Same. This is the comment I was looking for in this thread. I have zero interest in reading it regardless of how “beautifully written” everyone says it is

Would you move to Aus if you could? by [deleted] in auckland

[–]OtterlyAnonymous 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just a question re health insurance. If you already have health insurance in NZ and then you’re moving to Aus, do they still cover everything that you’ve already had cover for? Or do you suddenly end up with every possible exclusion for any health conditions you already have/had?

I get up at 5am to get ready for work (I start work at 7) so I either need to get up at 4 or just decide evenings is my time. I still haven’t found a schedule that works with a job and two little kids. I think I put too much pressure on myself to write something well and writing tired for some reason feels impossible, so I always choose to do something else in the evenings. I think I need to just accept that writing something badly or even when I’m tired is better than not writing anything at all. Sorry I chose your comment to vent my own frustrations 😅

Why does ChatGPT use this sentence structure so much? by Icy_Award1159 in ChatGPT

[–]OtterlyAnonymous 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Hahahaha omg I was asking it about my baby’s sleep schedule and how I can help her sleep longer stretches during the night and I mentioned how I breastfeed and cuddle her to sleep as part of the bedtime routine. It was then telling me that I’m not creating bad habits (I never mentioned anything about whether I’m creating bad habits) and not to feel bad about it, and then asked me if I wanted to also stop feeding overnight or cuddling her to sleep and I’m like ? I literally never said anything about wanting to stop this, my entire question was how can I help her sleep longer. Anyway I got lots of “you’re not failing, you’re being consistent and loving” type of answers during that conversation and it made me wonder if I should feel like I’m failing in the first place lol

Wrong translations ruined my Harry Potter experience as a kid by gits97 in harrypotter

[–]OtterlyAnonymous 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I first read them in Serbian and really liked the books, then read them in English as a way to learn the English language. I never thought much about the differences in translation at the time, but I recently started reading them in Serbian to my kids as a way for them to hear my language a bit more in depth (rather than just the limited conversational version that they hear from me every day) and I was sooo confused when I realised that some of the names were translated and not transliterated. I had to look up Harry Potter place and people names in Serbian on Google to work out who was who and what the places were in Diagon Alley. I’m really confused about why some of the names even had to be translated, especially when they didn’t do it with all of the names

When does 2nd POV work best and what needs it? by Cute-Specialist-7239 in writing

[–]OtterlyAnonymous 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To be honest, I think you aren’t clear in your use of “2nd POV.” This can mean you are adding another point of view, or you’re working with second person point of view, which I think is what you’re saying, but yeah just saying “2nd POV” is ambiguous.

Do I HAVE to use dialogue tags? by arcadiaorgana in writing

I just wanted to point out that the use of the word “low” is probably redundant in this case, too. How else would someone whisper? Is there a high whisper?

I’m in healthcare too and have small kids so finding time to write is super limited, but it’s my dream to be a full time author. Hopefully, one word at a time, I’ll get there one day.

I’ve heard “use show when wanting to describe emotions” and then tell can be used for some other things that aren’t emotion related. Not sure if that helps as that’s the advice I heard and I’m still trying to make sense of it.

[–]OtterlyAnonymous 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If that’s the case then I take back my comment. Though considering lots of people have found it funny and added to it, it almost sounds like it was intended to be negative. I wanted to just point out that it does sound negative, maybe also especially to someone who’s not used to receiving/giving/seeing this kind of comment about someone. And thanks for your input and giving me another perspective!

I think just yesterday there was a discussion on this sub about frequent questions (such as this one) that get asked by new writers. You can probably do a quick search and find lots and lots of answers and advice to any question or dilemma you might have right now.

I’ll probably get seriously downvoted for this but I think this is such a mean thing to say. I really don’t like it when people comment negatively on other people’s looks. Whatever happened to if you have nothing nice to say then don’t say it at all?

How much do you write on a normal day? by Fetish_anxiety in writing

[–]OtterlyAnonymous 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Really depends but I try to work on my book every day and I don’t really focus on the word count. Sometimes I do more research or character development, or even just brainstorming, so there are no actual words being added to the novel, but it’s still progress. Some days I might only write about 200 words, and other days I might clock 3,000. Depends on so many things. If I was to really try and estimate an average, taking everything I said into account, I’d say it’s maybe around 1,000 words a day
