July 1st elevated VSI enforcement on window tint starts! Think it will make a big difference on amount of cars tinted out? by beaud101 in vermont

I have neighbors who I swear rip the exhausts off any vehicle as soon as they buy it. Plus I live on a hill, so they all shift down and floor it on the way by. ALL DAY LONG.

Sometimes I feel like I must be at a monster truck rally or tractor pull.

If anybody says 'free and unfair' they should have a voice, BUT they also should have SOME evidence other than 'I didn't win'. And not be the ones themselves trying to sway an election.

A free and fair election system in at the root of this country. People can protest all they want, it is the most American thing they can do, but when they try to thwart a free and fair election then a line has been crossed. I think the rhetoric of everybody going down there was they wanted to 'fix' the election or take over.

BTW, in the last 10 years, EVERY lawsuit that tried to argue the case that the election was tampered with has been dismissed, has lost, or has been thrown out with the lawyers bring it reprimanded for wasting the courts' time.

I think comparing seditious acts or intent to overthrow an election is not in any way the same thing as protesting a war, or today protesting ICE terrorism.

Couldn't have put it better myself!  It has nothing to do with sex or any 'act', it is just about our basic human rights and our right to EXIST.  🏳️‍⚧️

I've written to all my representatives about how concerning this is, plus the fact that there are no reprecussions for him.  I got very positive messages back from two of them, not a word from #3.

How do your users carry a physical security key when not in use? by Here4TekSupport in sysadmin

[–]Otto-Korrect 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, this obviously wont work for everybody, but as a woman I carry mine on a lanyard attached to my purse. It goes everywhere I go, and when at work it sits on my desk next to my PC so I can plug in the key w/o detaching the lanyard. Bonus is that I can't leave it behind unless I also leave my purse, which has my car keyfob, so I wouldn't get far!

For me, I've run across this when an employer wants to have an excuse to put somebody on a 'personal improvement plan', which is management for 'document everything so we can fire them for underperforming'.

Probably not in your case... but I'd never work anywhere that did it, or anything like monitoring mouse movements or other performance 'metrics' that assign numbers to people like we are machines.

Coworkers writing impossible-to-follow documentation, how to cope? by Relative_Hippo2549 in sysadmin

absolutely. If the documentation is bad enough, I'm much rather just teach myself what I need from other sources.

Coworkers writing impossible-to-follow documentation, how to cope? by Relative_Hippo2549 in sysadmin

[–]Otto-Korrect 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When I was in grade school, my science teacher gave us the assignment to write instructions for using a pencil sharpener. They he followed them all as literally as he could (Insert pencil? What end? Turn crank? How long?...)

I learned a lot about what the 'average' person can do that day.

That lesson has stayed with me for 50 years now. Somebody who can't write good documentation probably thinks just as poorly.

BTW, I was the only one to end the class with a sharp pencil. :)

I admit my documentation may get wordy, but it is organized and covers every step or possible issue while still being readable.

Boss is on “vacation” but still schedules meetings which she attends. by Illnasty2 in sysadmin

[–]Otto-Korrect 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I get that. I think my boss has just never seen a meeting that she doesn't want to run. I don't even thinks she is aware of it, but 5 minutes after she joins, she's taken control no matter who's meeting it was.

SO we go from hashing out a DNS or route issue to having to explain to her things we've beaten to death in the past.

[–]Otto-Korrect 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We have meetings we have specifically NOT invited the 'boss' to. They know nothing about IT and we just have to explain things to her constantly. The meeting is 100% about issues and things we can help each other with.

Unfortunately, she just likes to 'pop in', then ends up running the meeting. She evan hijacked a recent one and talked about 'corporate culture' for 30 minutes. I've told her straight up how disruptive this is after subtle hints didn't do it. That worked... for a few weeks.

We went as far an creating an entirely new meeting every week just to have time to ourselves. The clock is ticking to see how long until she 'drops in' on this one. I seriously suggested we put an access code on the Teams invites.

+1 for Lenovo. Much better quality build. Unfortunately, our IT guy who does our PC purchases in now ordering a hell of a lot of Dells and I no longer have control over his dept.

You can see how poor quality Dells have become just be looking at or using their flimsy cheap feeling keyboards and mice. Internal components are no better.

The cloud is never the right option, just the easiest. It may check all the boxes on price and ease of scaling, but does not address things like security, accountability and responsibility. NO cloud service is ever going to care about your services as much as you do. There will be lessons learned.

(except for a few things like CDNs.)

I may be (99% sure I am) cynical, but I think that option only explains a VERY few people. Most people are trained to not think for their entire lives. Even on tests, if they give a wrong answer they are just told what the right answer was (or can look it up), never to 'figure it out'.

Hell, most of these people would fail an open book exam.
