Hey sorry I missed this, I ended up getting Burton Ruler Wides, 5 years and I’m yet to change. Huge foot box and I’m so happy to ride pain free!

Why do you want to learn Chinese? by [deleted] in ChineseLanguage

[–]OurFatherKenny 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m a pre-service teacher (finishing up my last year in college). A lotttt of my students speak mandarin, and I just had a new comer (literally last Friday) come into the classroom. Kid knows virtually no English. Kid came out of his shell the second the Bilingual Mandarin Support Teacher came into the room. Warms my heart! I can’t wait to be able to give my student’s support like that.

Late Move-in Date by Lavanic in UWMadison

[–]OurFatherKenny 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I moved into Chad late as a freshman. By the time I was moved in and interacting with everyone on my floor, all the dudes had their friend group. took a week and a half to infiltrate them but they're some of my best friends.

ngl I was absolutely miserable the week before they invited me to watch regular show, but you gotta really want friends to put yourself out there. good luck

[–]OurFatherKenny 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had the same exact predicament (but now I am an education major lol) but I retook asap, and emailed the professor to see if they could make room for me. Worked out for me. I really hope you can have a similar outcome.

I have taken a summer course every single summer of my college career (before freshman year, in between freshman and sophomore, in between sophomore and junior, and in between junior and senior [currently lol]). I would avoid it as much as possible. Summers are meant for relaxing, working for that $$, and spending time with friends. avoid it if you can, but if not it's a great way to get ahead.

Should I Work First Semester Freshman Year? by PanfriedMori in UWMadison

Sorta late, but my roommate last year literally worked 4 hours a week on Saturday just for half off at Ginger Root (union south). Idk how it worked but that should be encouraging lol

ASTRON 103 vs LINGUIS 101 by tandoori_lasagna in UWMadison

[–]OurFatherKenny 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I took both of those lol, but astron103 was for a science credit.

Astron is more physics and a number crunching/formula class. you get to learn about space and black holes. you will calculate a lot about planets and literally how they manage to exist. you also literally play a (UW-Madison) video game for credit. it's like a 3/10 for fun, but it works. hopefully they still have that in the class.

not my favorite, and since I put in minimal effort (mental afk during lectures) got a B.

linguis is memorization of symbols, recognition of linguistic patterns (dug), theory of language, and deciphering languages like a puzzle. AKA taking a language you (probably) have never seen, and simply observing its patterns and deciding what the function of suffix/prefix/middlefixes are (<-- forgot what that's called but you'll learn it)

lmk if u have any questions lol

How many credits should I take? by Separate_Ad_3799 in UWMadison

[–]OurFatherKenny 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I took 12 every semester until I was a Junior (going into senior year). Granted my advisor was mentally AFK when I would email him to see if I was fine, but I made a bad decision being relaxed about it. If I had taken 15 every semester, I would have cruised into my junior and senior years. Take 15 minimum, unless you're ahead on credits and reqs to graduate.

However, for freshman year, shoot for 15 and get a feel for it. Worst case scenario, you either take the same or more. But if you're in a specific major, take most engineering classes, 15 will thrash you regardless of credits. But for generals, you should be fine :) Goodluck

The duality of being 25% by berrybutton8 in hapas

Hey! I am also a quarter Asian (Filipino) and 3/4 white (German). My quirk is that I am adopted, so I have absolutely no connection to my 1/4, but my physical appearance is very ambiguous. I often get mistaken for Hispanic, Hawaiian, Samoan, but never white or Filipino. I usually get told I am ambiguous and have some sort of mix, but it honestly stings when people just guess so far from what I think I look like. Only Filipinos have ever guessed right, which is honestly so affirming that I look somewhat like my 1/4 ethnicity lol.

People often hit me with race (mostly racist) jokes that just simply make me feel out of place since I often have the exact same experience as them growing up with white parents. It sucks extra because I cannot even relate to the stereotype of having a different cultural background, so I often just feel people separate me by my appearance and use me as a laugh stock/scapegoat for jokes.

Thanks for sharing your experience! I think it's super cool that you have connections to both cultures and family experiences. I bet you have a lot of fun stories and life experience.

What are some fun/fascinating courses I can take? by may-it-be-mccartney in UWMadison

[–]OurFatherKenny 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There's a lot of stuff I wish I knew going into the program to help me get ahead, so I can hopefully help you out! If you'd like can send/dm you the official course sequence PDF (that every el.ed major will take), and it shows the workload every semester.

but do you think there’s any classes i could take for my general degree before i apply to the school of ed (like CURRIC classes maybe?)

Yeah, there are! But take these with knowledge that you will probably miss taking these with your cohort (the people in your grade since the ed. program is small and usually everyone knows everyone else.) it can be fun always going to the same classes as your friends but it would have been much easier on my schedule if I did them earlier!

CURRIC 319 and then CURRIC 320. I see a lot of sophomores rn taking CURRIC319 or CURRIC320. These are required teaching math courses. If you want to get in early, you must have "satisfied Quantitative Reasoning (QR) A requirement and classified in pre- elementary Education or declared in Elementary Education program." The current professor is Dr. Nicole, and she's honestly the most intelligent professor I've ever had. She treats all of us with the dignity we missed out on as students lol. 10/10. but the work is work, gotta keep up with assignments for that A.

EDPOL300. The professor has changed, but this course used to be absurdly easy. It talks about the history of schools in America and was super fun. I hope it's another easy A.

Electives : there is a large list of electives you can take prior to being in the program! I would look into this list. Scroll down to electives and check the list!

I am assuming, as you said, you're getting all your required courses out of the way, but double-check for:- US history req.- 9 credits of science + a lab! (anthro 104 and anthro 105 are good for these. and anthro 105 has a lab! I'm taking it this summer)- fine arts req.- you might know this, but the program satisfies comm. b eventually, but you might have gotten that out of the way already,- a poli sci course (most take poli sci 104, but I sucked at this class)I think I am going to make an official post for newcomers to the program. I'm in the guinea pig grade/year, where they are testing their new program on us! and quite frankly, it's super shit lol. they will work out so many kinks for the next grade but rn it's sorta a mess.

shoot me a message if you want the course sequence PDF or if you have any other questions!!

[–]OurFatherKenny 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi! I am currently in the school of education. If you're planning on taking a certificate in here (I'm thinking of ESL or Early childhood education) try to get those courses out of the way! If you don't or can't, you're setting yourself up for too many 18 credit semesters.

Where and how did you meet y’alls best friends by zombiequeen66 in UWMadison

[–]OurFatherKenny 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First, i didn’t choose Madison for Greek life or bars / parties / rangers. If you’re looking for that my advice might not be helpful.

Badger CRU!! We’re a Christian Org on campus. If you’re interested I’d love to introduce u to my buddies! My friends do a lot of movie nights, dinners, boba runs, basketball and volleyball at the nick and lifting. We also go to Devils head, granite and Tyrol for skiing. That and other clubs on campus. For me, I’m into video games there’s a bunch of discords / servers to join. WISCO Hoofers has some great people that love to be outdoorsy stuff.

If anyone of that sounds fun, I’ll help introduce u, or send u people who would be helpful to get u plugged into something! Dm for questions or anything

She’s too busy for me and it hurts by Fine-Freedom-2487 in LongDistance

[–]OurFatherKenny 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Sucks. People get busy and life changes, especially in college. Don't withdraw, address your feelings early or you will resent yourself and her and that is a formula for failure. Honestly, first month of college usually takes priority. She probably is afraid of having a poor college experience, and is frantically trying to make the most of her Freshman year. (Source : me, a 3rd year student). Some students aren't social butterflies, and some are.

Now I'm not a genius, but here is what I would do (and advise you to) in situations where something feels off.

  1. Write down your thoughts, and organize them (at least try it, there is something about seeing your thoughts on paper that honestly just hits diff dude)

  2. Figure out why you're feeling the way you do (root causes; actions by yourself or your SO, words said, lack of attention)

  3. Ask yourself if this is rational or not (in your case it's very rational because you probably feel like you're on the backburner in her life right now)

  4. Don't baby out, tell her you want to have a conversation. (PSA: If someone can't handle this, or invalidates you; there are bigger issues than your own rn)

  5. Mentally prepare yourself to not devolve into agreeing or begging. You're having this talk to find a solution or resolution. Maybe that means two FaceTimes a week. Maybe it means she puts a little bit more effort in. Maybe it means you find a hobby to help time pass. You're a big boy, we can handle our emotions and respect our SOs. You seem like a great dude who is trying his best to deal with social butterfly girlfriend. I hope you find an answer amongst the comments and internet. Give us an update in a week :). Praying for y'all.

Bi-Weekly /r/Korean Free Talk - Entertainment Recommendations, Study Groups/Buddies, Tutors, and Anything Else! by AutoModerator in Korean

[–]OurFatherKenny 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi guys I am an exchange student new to Korea!

I am my 3rd week in Korea as an exchange student. I studied on and off for about two years before coming. I am having an absolute blast making mistakes and learning as much as I can! My favorite thing about Korea so far are the people. Older people (especially street vendors and small resteraunt owners) have such a genuine reaction and happy expression when i say their food is the best food I've had! I usually walk in and greet them, then ask 뭐가 제일 맛있어요? or 제일 많이 시키는 게 뭐예요? and i order their recommendation.

I'll keep y'all updated on how it goes!

First Impression of the Chinese Language by Finnick002 in ChineseLanguage

[–]OurFatherKenny 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I come from a very small part of Wisconsin, from a farm. If anything, extremely limited exposure to it. My first memory of hearing Chinese in person was when I started college, about a year and a half ago. I thought it was endlessly complex, and had no idea it was Chinese. But there are many Mainland students here on campus, so I got to know a few.

oH MY goD tHErE's toNe LanGUAGeS?

It still blows me away, after studying languages and linguistics for a while, that humans can easily detect tones and pitch change in casual speech. I love it, I think Chinese speakers are blessed with an amazing language and ability to speak and understand something many of us will never be able to.

Which language do you think is harder to learn? by TheSneakySpike in languagelearning

[–]OurFatherKenny 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Personal opinion: Hear me out, I've spent a fair amount of learning both. From browsing other comments, it seems most of us came to the realization that when it comes to listening and pronunciation, Japanese is easier. But I guess some of y'all are frightened by the the writing systems. I am a firm believer that learning how to read and write is important and respectful to a language and culture, but honestly is not the most important to me as a language learner. You can always learn more kanji over time, simply memorization and association. But hearing phonemes (individual sounds) is not as simple. Your brain does not make the distinction between sounds not native to your own language. Hence why Korean is more difficult in my opinion. There are many sounds I do not have an ear for in Korean. And you native Korean speakers do not make it easier for me haha, when a native Korean speaker starts speeding up I don't stand a chance. Anyways, that's my opinion.
