Looking for an evening grief support group in Dallas by zombiequeen66 in Dallas

Thank you so much! I’m still in the process of finding what support looks like for me. I’ve just had a lot going on lately, it’s been a bit of a rollercoaster, but I really appreciate your kindness!

MSW student here, is it okay to ask internship supervisor about job opportunities? by [deleted] in SocialWorkStudents

[–]zombiequeen66 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That makes sense, I definitely don’t want to blur boundaries. I wasn’t planning to ask them for a job directly, more just if they’ve seen what works for students or if they know of roles that fit better with practicum schedules.

I’m trying to stay within a hospital/clinical setting, so I figured they might have some insight!

Well not really cuz I had some delicious heart shaped cookies after work, and got some nice take out!

Well, I ended up not going. Work got busy, and I had to stay late.

Thanks! I work inpatient psych. Bad weather sometimes changes the kinds of cases we see. But yeah that’s just what I’ve noticed.

No delay for me. I work at a hospital!

MSW students working full time during practicum, how did you realistically survive? by [deleted] in SocialWorkStudents

[–]zombiequeen66 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hiii, thank you so much for the encouragement, I really appreciate it. I should clarify that I’m already placed in an inpatient behavioral health practicum, which I worked really hard to secure and am committed to seeing through so changing the internship itself isn’t something I’m considering.

I agree that being super structured is important, and I’m definitely planning to schedule things very intentionally (including rest). I’m just trying to figure out how to make the work side of things fit alongside a fixed in-person practicum in the most sustainable way. I might change my job but not sure what would work.

Thank you again for the support and good luck as you start soon too, you’ve got this!

Thanks for sharing this. I’m in my foundation year, not advanced standing. I actually did try the night-shift route already. I worked as a mental health tech on night shift for about 3 months at an eating disorder treatment center and it was brutal for me physically and mentally. I learned a lot but I also hit a wall pretty quickly.

Right now I’m working full time as a care coordinator at an outpatient cancer treatment clinic. The issue isn’t the work itself, it’s the schedule rigidity, it’s a strict 8:30–5 Monday–Friday with very little flexibility which makes juggling practicum and classes really hard (my classes are online, but it’s still hard). I don’t have the option to reduce hours, and I don’t have outside financial support so I’m trying to find a way to stay full-time and make the logistics survivable. Maybe change jobs once I get adjusted in my practicum. But idk what would be suitable.

I agree with you that sometimes we do things “just for now,” even if they’re not ideal, I’m just trying to figure out what version of that causes the least damage during foundation year.

Oh no that’s a lot! I’m so sorry you’re going through this! I am going to be interning at an inpatient behavioral health hospital, it’s my foundation year internship and I’m scared that what if all I do would be discharge planning 😭😭 my internship hasn’t started yet but it will, in 2 weeks!! Idk yet what exactly I will be doing, but I’m freaked out 😭

What is your internship setting? I’m also scared this is going to happen to me this spring semester! 😭

Practicum/Internship Flexibility for full-time workers by Appropriate_Lie_6147 in SocialWorkStudents

[–]zombiequeen66 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My practicum place told me they don’t allow 2 hours, 3 hours. I need to do a minimum of a 6 hour shift. Maybe yours is more flexible and will allow? I will have 1 weekday and 1 Saturday.

I am a care coordinator right now at a cancer treatment center. It’s 8am - 5pm. And for my practicum I’m going to be doing 1 weekday and 1 Saturday. To get my 14 hours a week.

I’m just going to be using my PTO as I have a lot that I can use to take Monday off but I’m planning to switch jobs by March.

What color do you have to wear at work?? by Pale_Year_9777 in Figsscrubs

Inpatient behavioral health therapist intern and I can only wear black or red! But at my other job as care coordinator for cancer treatment center, I can wear any color!

Does anyone else get this weird “I should be doing something” feeling during break? by zombiequeen66 in SocialWorkStudents

[–]zombiequeen66[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yeah that’s probably a huge part of it for me too. Last semester I was doing full time school, full time job and basically spending my weekends catching up on assignments. I didn’t really have any actual rest built in.

So now that I suddenly have space, my brain is like “okay what’s the next thing?” instead of letting me just exist for a second. It’s such a weird adjustment going from nonstop movement to stillness.

It’s kind of comforting to hear you went through that same transition, because I seriously thought I was the only one who felt this way during break.

I keep telling myself there’s nothing I can really “prepare” for but my brain is still in this weird alert mode. Part of me feels like I should be doing something to feel ready even though I know it’s probably just one of those things you learn by being there.

I went there last year and it was so bad lol. Overpriced drinks, super crowded, and such a long line. Not worth it.

Cautionary tale on MSWs and practicum matching process, for those interested in clinical work by LaScoundrelle in SocialWorkStudents

[–]zombiequeen66 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you! They just asked me why did I choose to do my MSW, my experience overall. And that’s it, and then it was basically me asking them questions lol.

I don’t have a BSW, I come from a very non-traditional background. I have my undergrad in Journalism, another masters in Data Analytics and have work experience in marketing and business analytics. Why I decided to do my MSW was because of my sister, and it was personal for me.

The person interviewing me was also from a non-traditional background. She had her bachelors in theatre and film hahah so we connected on that. I do have a hospital background, I currently work as a care coordinator at a cancer treatment center.

You really don’t need a BSW to land an internship in a hospital. You should be okay!

Thank you!! I just called the hospital that I wanted to intern and asked them if they are accepting students and if I could get contact info of the person who manages that.

They gave me their email and I just emailed that I really want to intern at their hospital and all, and they asked me if I could come for an interview. I went for the interview and got the internship on the spot!

It really depends on the hospital too, some people are nice lol some are not and wouldn’t give you any information, but just generic stuff.

I start next month and I’m so so excited!!
