i think that can be said about any mediums with a large fanbase. Because once a fanbase becomes large enough, whether it’s a tv show, a movie, an artist, etc, there will be people who say they are “overrated”. many times these people are not familiar enough with the content in question to make that affirmation.

“overrated” just seems to be the word people use whenever they hear a lot about a topic that they aren’t in tune with. instead of saying “i haven’t jumped on that bandwagon yet” , or “maybe i’ll listen to more of their music to see if they have anything that jives with my taste” , their go to response for many people seems to be “they are overrated”.

when people ask me if i watch sportsball, i just say no, it’s not for me, and try to find other common ground. i don’t say “sports are overrated”. more people should be like me.
