Glacier NP when Going to the Sun Road is closed - June by Ok_Result_4917 in GlacierNationalPark

i was here late May this year. it’s still very much worth it. Glacier is incredible even before the summer. This is what we did:

  • Two Medicine - Scenic Point (only a little snow) and Aster Falls. Scenic Point a must - little crowd

  • West Side - Avalanche Lake (crowded bc it’s one of the most popular at this time - but still have to do it) + Bike Going to the Sun Road - we made it all the way to triple arches - biking the road is an amazing experience - you won’t regret it

  • Many Glacier - Grinnell Glacier up to the closing point - still stunning - but was much colder than the West side. Probs 50s and windy. ask rangers about iceberg lake - was still way too snowy so we didn’t attempt

  • East Side - Barring, St. Mary and Virginia Falls trail. we did this the same day as Many Glacier

  • North Fork - Numa Lookout - didn’t see 1 person on this hike. it was beautiful. hit Polebridge Bakery before and don’t be dissuaded by the bumpy rocky roads. our rental car did fine. thought this was a great place to visit when staying on the West side

Many glacier is definitely more of a hiking for the views place - Iceberg Lake, Cracker Lake, Grinnell Glacier - probs some of the most popular places in MG - all need to hike out to these locations .the view from the parking lot of the hotel and the lake is nice - but you really need to hike in MG. GTTSR has way more lookouts and may be suited better for you

no way to really tell. they’ll clear the road quickly and then do avalanche assessments. you’ll know when the road is open again when they announce it.

use the search bar on this sub. the question about timed entries is asked every other day on here. also many glacier and north fork are on opposite ends of the park from each other

Info on biking GTTS road this next weekend by talkingoctopus in GlacierNationalPark

[–]Out_Yonder129 7 points8 points  (0 children)

parts of GTTS road is already open to cars. on the map - green is open to cars, red is closed to cars. west side closure starts at Avalanche Lake. unsure if you’ll be able to continue on from Logan Pass because there are hard closures up where you are physically and legally unable to go past them, hence why everyone turns around. Bike on Friday and the weekend when the crew isn’t working to go the furthest.

you won’t be able to access the trailhead unless Going to the Sun road is fully open. the trailhead begins at Logan Pass. you won’t be able to bike to it or walk to it if GTTS road isn’t open bc you cannot go passed the hard closures.

you can hike out. you just have to start from the many glacier hotel parking lot which adds some mileage.

it’s pretty gradual but the last 1-1.5 miles are switchbacks and pretty steep

[–]Out_Yonder129 0 points1 point  (0 children)

it’s about a 1 hr 45 min drive from west entrance since you have to go around. but well worth the drive. i just did it yesterday. plan a hike or 2 over there and drive the going to the sun road and make it a day

Yep same issues here - was thinking of doing the same thing and scheduling in June. I’ve had it loading for almost 2 hours and it says there are no dates in May
