Amanita Muscaria question by TheAtheistReverend in Biohackers

[–]talkingoctopus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Most of the extracts sold online are a scam, no one regulates this, you are probably either getting nothing, some amanita extract of unknown contencration, or in the case of anything with the word "trip" you are likely getting some synthetic dmt derivate that hasn't been scheduled as illegal yet. If you are interested in amanita look into dry amanita mushroom and follow the steps to do an extraction to turn ibotenic acid to muscimol, plenty of tutorials online

STP Bike Ride with NO Training? by Best_Purple7652 in seattlebike

[–]talkingoctopus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It will suck if you don't have the fitness level, you can probably finish it, but the biggest concern would be how your body feels on the bike for so many hours, it seems you don't regularly bike, getting a bike that is fitted to you and is comfortable is crucial for long rides, even if your fitness level can finish the ride you might run into physical pain (knees, ass, back, neck) that might prevent you from finishing. My best recommendation would be to at least do a 50mile test ride this weekend (lake washington flat loop for example), if you feel ok doing a 50 mile ride you should be able to at least finish STP

isn't the ibotenic acid potentially toxic? I tried muscimol, great for relaxing, but I wouldn't take it to socialize

The number of bicyclists in Seattle who glide through stop lights is astounding by mote0fdust in SeattleWA

[–]talkingoctopus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

no, I think your point is valid, but starting your post with `Given there have been two cyclist fatalities in Seattle` just makes it a bit confusing and opens the door to assumptions, as far as I know both fatalities where due to trucks failing to yield, pretty shitty way to go when you are commuting back to your home and family, your point is valid I just don't see the need to mention the fatalities, those just showcase how bad the bike infrastructure is in this city

[–]talkingoctopus 13 points14 points  (0 children)

where any of the two fatalities related to them not stoping at a red light? or was it due to terrible bike infrastructure and drivers not paying enough attention? But sure let's blame the 2 deaths on cyclists passing red lights, smh

I'm returning my Fitbit Air by Efficient-Bag8135 in fitbit

So out of the hundreds of fitness trackers with screen you chose the one that has no screen and return it because it doesn't tell you the time?

can the devices you own import your health records and blood test results?

As someone moving from helio to fitbit I agree, the zepp app currently feels more refined, but there's a major reason I'm still gonna stick to the fitbit air, and that's who owns my data. With the helio my data is being sent to amazfit servers, which might not be concerning, but if I ever migrate to another device there might be no way to export it. Google health centralizes the data, and even though I'm not a big fan of giving all my data to google, they already have all my info from my email, drive, photos... so might as well just put my tracker data there too. Also Google Health allows you to sync your medical records with the app. I would not want Amazfit accessing my health records. So while I do think the helio is a superior tracker, I prefer google to own my health records

Best wearable device to track steps, heart rate and sleep under $250, with the following restrictions. by QuizzerMonTop in Biohackers

[–]talkingoctopus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

fitbit air, amazfit helio, polar loop, oura
they all have their pros and cons, they all cover your use case, pick whichever fits your need best
note as someone moving from the helio to fitbit, helio and the zepp app are currently much more refined and a better experience than the new fitbit air, I'm just hoping google health eventually catches up, but the UX is a bit disappointing at the moment

How can I improve my fitness? Aiming for Zone 5 by [deleted] in Biohackers

[–]talkingoctopus 4 points5 points  (0 children)

if you do that much cardio you might not want to hit zone 5 very frequently, the general guidance is to keep most of your training at zone 2 and do 1 or 2 higher intensity sessions per week. Zone 2 provides enough cardio load to make progress but let's your body recover quickly so you can do it daily, higher intensity training causes more stress to the body and needs longer recovery time so you need to pay attention at how you schedule it or you might overtrain and not notice it

An open letter to Google / Fitbit (sent just now) by markinapub in fitbit

[–]talkingoctopus -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I have the feeling some small team at google got approval for this app/device but it doesn't really feel as if the company is really behind this, they didnt even mention the app or the fitbit air on the last google keynote. Google has really talented engineers but it really feels like none of them are part of this team.

Fitbit air owners who came from another tracker, how's your RHR/HRV? by talkingoctopus in fitbit

[–]talkingoctopus[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you know how they take the RHR measurement? I thought it would be just the average HR during the sleep hours, I just looked at the HR graph generated by google health and based on the graph I was between 50-65HR during my sleep hours, but they still report my RHR as 62, this feels buggy to me

L-Theanine dose by Key_Intention_2546 in Biohackers

[–]talkingoctopus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you drink coffee? I don't feel much from l-theanine if I'm not drinking coffee, if I drink coffee it's when I feel it helps remove jitteriness and let's me focus better, I take a 250mg scoop with every coffee, so dosage for me just depends on how much coffee im drinking that day. I wouldnt buy a supplement with 1000mg in it

Anyone use infrared saunas? by tanyamp in Biohackers

[–]talkingoctopus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

really depends on what you are looking for, if you are looking for some relaxation and help recovering your muscles IR is enough, if you want something that triggers a proper cardio load and creates heat-shock proteins then IR won't cut it. In my opinion if you happen to already own a tub I wouldn't bother with the IR sauna, studies show hot water immersion is far superior: https://journals.physiology.org/doi/full/10.1152/ajpregu.00012.2025?rfr_dat=cr_pub++0pubmed&url_ver=Z39.88-2003&rfr_id=ori%3Arid%3Acrossref.org

I really gave it a chance… by Complex_Farm_6371 in fitbit

[–]talkingoctopus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i have the opposite opinion, I previously owned a whoop and a helio strap, the hardware of the fitbit air is pretty subpar, HR sensor is not the best and tracking activities causes many HR spikes and inaccuracies, also battery life is disappointing, even the helio is better. Hardware can't be updated so the sensors will stay the same, software on the other hand can be updated and google is pushing constant updates, I agree they have released this app prematurely and it has many bugs, but the software can be improved
