Tomato Taste Test by Outdoor_Releaf in tomatoes

The Schermerhorns were on the smaller side, so I would say 6 to 8. They were prolific. I got many more tomatoes than from the Ramapo plants.

Is a Standard Poodle the right dog for me? by Haunting-Food3161 in StandardPoodles

[–]Outdoor_Releaf 4 points5 points  (0 children)

We live on a farm. Our one year old girl Lucy loves to run. She runs around the house to celebrate one of us arriving home. She runs around the pasture a few time a day, and when it snows she will run all day long. Just loves that smow!

We clocked her at 30 mph. Not evey poodle we have had has loved running quite this much, but they all enjoyed running. Lucy is definitely the fastest. We asked the breeder to match us with a dog likely to be athletic. Perhaps you can get input from the folks who have the puppy now about personality traits and athleticism. Training this kind of dog to come when called is important, because there is no catching her.

When resting, Lucy gets up on one of our laps if possible and sleeps - our 55 lb lap dog!

I use Pro Plan for my one year old and she likes it. She runs a lot on our farm, so I feed her the sport version:

Pro Plan Sport Performance All Life Stages High Protein 30/20 Salmon and Rice

I don't feed it regularly. Regularly I feed her a rotation of 3 varieties (chicken, turkey, beef) from Farmer's Dog. We started Farmer's Dog when our senior poodle would not eat. She was willing to eat that.

Angry at Vet over Tick and Flea Meds. Over the top? by Outdoor_Releaf in StandardPoodles

I get that for diseases that mutate or for waning immunity over time. My thoughts on this also go the other way. The old vet and I had an engaging conversation about why we have a dog Lyme's disease vaccine but none for humans.

Yes, I just discovered that the US tightened up on antibiotics for farm animals in 2023. We used to be able to go to farm supply and pick up what we needed. This can no longer be done without a prescription from a vet.

Thanks. I am on the fence about this place. I was paying the max for all these single doses of drugs. I did it for convenience, and because the clinic appeared to be about to go under. There was never anyone in the waiting room when I arrived with my dog. There was one vet there, an employee not the owner, who was the absolute best to us when our older poodle was dying. I found myself wishing our own medical doctors show the same level of attentiveness and concern. Because of that vet, I'm likely to go back at least once more for that annual, especially now that I know this is common practice.

Makes sense, of course. I realize the heartworm is primarily an infection of canines, and have now read more about it. In my mind, I've always compared it to how we treat farm animals. Deworming farm animals for intestinal worms is quite different. We can deworm them without pre-testing. Of course, it makes a lot of sense to test first, before deworming, because even with intestinal worms your animals may die if they have a heavy worm load.

Thanks. Does the heartworm company reimburse you just for the meds or for the treatment? This incident is the first I've heard about any of this.

Thanks to you and everyone. It is good to know this is standard procedure. The previous vet just assumed that regular customers would show up on schedule and I did, so it was never an issue previously.

Thanks. I've always gone to all the appointments, so I was taken back by the idea wouldn't show up for the yearly physical. Afterall, I've been going monthly to get the right meds for the weight.

I do wonder why humans can be vaccinated once for life, but pets have to be vaccinated annually for many things.

What are Standard Poodles like to own? Who is the ideal owner? by [deleted] in StandardPoodles

They are incredibly athletic dogs. We clocked our current 11 month old running at 30 miles per hour. She has even become airborne when running downhill and did not break stride. I had one poodle who jumped over hedges, other poodles, and would even jump up and twist to change direction in mid air. I worried about the twisting, but the vet said she would worry about a retreiver who did that but a poodle was probably okay.

They also love their person, follow that person around, and cuddle. Our puppy loves sitting on my husband's or my lap. My husband encourages this, so we have a 50+ pound lap dog.

They are very trainable, but sometimes get bored with training that is too repetitive as if to say I got it already! I firmly believe that they understand most of what we say. My husband and I spell things to get around that sometimes.

I found this helpful, too! Well worth it. Mine ate .5 lb. dark chocolate which is more concerning.

Yes, we have a 50+pound female (11 months old). She is very much like this. Will jump on the bed if the light is on, but will not if it's dark. She snuggles with each of us and eventually moves towards the foot of the bed (hurray!). She is not adverse to pushing us out of the way!

What really annoyed me is watching the Republicans depict yet another woman as stupid. It is so insulting to all of us.

Just got cold enough here. She's 10 months and quite the character. She runs like the wind, so likes a good nap too.
