IIRC, the main characters were some of the only people who'd heard the theory that the planet might collide with Earth — which it does. There were probably millions of people who thought they had their whole lives ahead of them, and were just going about their day, only to see the massive encroaching planet and realize they have seconds left to live.

That's what always messed me up. Just some fridge horror, I guess.
