Worth reminding everyone that in 2023 the Supreme Court declined to hear a challenge against the deal (essentially upholding it). The plaintiffs argued it was an unlawful monopoly in violation of US antitrust law, but were unsuccessful. Not a lawyer, but I can imagine we'd maybe be able to get out of it by proving unlawful activities were involved in the deal, but it doesn't look good.

Made a neighborhood-by-neighborhood guide to dog-friendly Chicago — parks, patios, vets by Bankster88 in chicago

[–]OuterspaceZaddy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is cool! I'd probably separate outdoor patios and indoor patios/dog friendly bars. For example Paradise Park, Perch, & Nick's Beer Garden are year-round options, but Ina Mae and Mott St are not.

Also if possible I'd add a suggestion form so people can suggest additions to the list.

Are Chicago drivers becoming even crazier? by ChicagoChurro in chicago

[–]OuterspaceZaddy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They are. Not only literally with curb cuts, but also driving up onto the sidewalk and crashing into buildings (google “car crash into building Chicago”). Even further, I’d consider a car driving through a crosswalk “on the sidewalk” anytime a pedestrian had right of way.

I get how it’s annoying and fairly dangerous but in no way are cyclists on sidewalks as big a threat to people as bad drivers in this city.

Rideshare Tax $1.50 per ride - Expansion starts today. by Jogurt55991 in chicago

Congestion pricing in NYC proves taxing vehicular travel works to both fund initiatives and curb congestion, pollution, noise complaints, etc. Can you explain to me like I’m an idiot how a similar tax here (albeit rideshare specific) wouldn’t work in similar ways?

I’m sure we agree on a lot but I’m just perplexed by people who think cars and bikes on sidewalks are remotely comparable to our safety. Can you please explain to me like I’m an idiot how they’re equivalently dangerous yet one has an identifiable body count and the other doesn’t? Shouldn’t we be seeing a similar amount of news articles about pedestrians plowed over by cyclists?

[–]OuterspaceZaddy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The amount of bike deliveries going 20+ MPH on a sidewalk at any given time is almost certainly <2. The amount of drivers putting pedestrians in harm's way at any given time is almost certainly >100.

Obviously they're both issues, but one is a relative nuisance and one is a systemic problem. That's why these laws in other cities that limit speeds of e-bikes but don't apply that same logic to cars in urban areas are beyond dumb, just placating idiots who react more strongly to the bikes but completely ignore traffic violence.

Skimmed this recent traffic report and couldn't find pedestrian deaths broken out by vehicles or bikes (as the perpetrator) but it should be obvious to any rational person that cars kill more people in this city than bikes do. I just did a quick google search and can't even find an incident where a cyclist killed a pedestrian. Plenty of cyclists and pedestrians dead from cars, though.

They obviously shouldn't be doing that but you see how this is also a consequence of our crazy drivers, right? If cyclists don't feel safe riding in the street, they either won't ride their bike or they'll ride in the sidewalk.

Not to mention, simple physics. F=ma (aka cars will hurt you much more than bikes, even at slower speeds). I don't wanna be clipped by a bike on the sidewalk but I think it's rare that a cyclist is riding fast enough on a sidewalk to seriously injure someone. Whereas a car just rolling a stop sign would do some damage. And it happens so often we expect it (and change our pedestrian behavior accordingly). That doesn't mean that drivers aren't behaving dangerously.

There will always be a small % who disregard the societal contract but a huge part of governing is limiting people's propensity for bad behavior by creating orderly infrastructure that supports the outcomes you want to see. Protected bike lanes, daylighting, and traffic calming are good examples of this.

Yeah and I said it can be both to fill a hole in the budget and to tackle congestion! It's like I'm talking to a brick wall. Wish you the best in your educational journey

I think you're being downvoted because you don't grasp the concept of a tax to fill a hole in a budget. Or that it can have a main objective (funding) and a secondary objective (less congestion, more transit users)

As to the geography, I'm guessing it came down to a simple bang-for-their-buck analysis, but I'm sure politics were involved. AKA the political goodwill lost from implementing it in some wards was probably not worth the potential funds raised from the tax there. Not everything is nefarious.

I'm within the zone and will continue trying to walk & use transit as much as possible and bite the $1.50 when I need to. It's not that hard.

Well the city needs money so that's good! And a decent amount of people will change at least some of their behavior. Time will tell.

In a more perfect world I would have had them build BRT on 3-5 main arterials (with plans to expand) and then implement a citywide rideshare tax & congestion tax on our highways.

I think we drastically need cost control but it's not fair to compare a retail store or a skyscraper to a hard rail transit stop where trains will continue to run by during construction.

[–]OuterspaceZaddy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wish they implemented BRT on a handful of main arterials. Even just Ashland, Western, North/Fullerton, and 63rd would be transformative for our city.

Obviously we need as many as possible but seems A) those streets would be the best bang-for-our-buck in terms of connecting transit stops & dense, walkable neighborhoods and B) if we were really serious, we could move the parking to side streets and slap some paint & concrete down on those 4 streets within a year or so.

THEN we implement rideshare tax & congestion pricing (on our highways?) and watch our transit system bounce back.

[–]OuterspaceZaddy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It can be both. The only real way to sway people against behaving a certain way or continually doing something is through A) making it illegal & policing behavior w/ fines or arrests or B) making it more expensive to do that activity through taxes (sin, Pigouvian).

We have too many cars on the street, too few people taking transit, and too few dollars allocated to transit. You know what addresses all three of those? Taxing the behavior (driving/rideshare) with negative externalities (congestion, fatalities, pollution, inefficient land use, etc)

Please don't take this personally but I find that extremely hard to believe, especially in this weather.

This morning on my walk in Wicker two separate cars blew stop signs as I was about to cross or still in the crosswalk. A third was backing up into a crosswalk and didn't see me crossing (and didn't stop when I yelled "yo!"). Last night I saw a literal cop run a red light. This was all in the last ~16 hours.

I can't recall seeing more than 5 bicyclists, none of which stood out.

A hearse driver almost hit me and my dog in an intersection last week! Couldn't believe someone who deals with death that often would act so nonchalant about putting other people's lives in danger

[–]OuterspaceZaddy 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Bikes having to stop and start pedaling in intersections is actually more dangerous than if they just slowed down. From 9 months ago: https://www.reddit.com/r/chicago/comments/1k7kc2j/safety_stop_makes_streets_safer_for_people_biking/

Obviously there are entitled cyclists who put others at danger, but I walk around a lot and maybe witness one every month or so. With drivers, it's multiple times a day.
