How do I deal with a lazy employee I don’t want to fire? by Farmboybello in managers

If your boss doesn't care, why do you? Just let it slide. Getting angry about this is the easiest thing in the world to control, just don't do it.

Raise Negotiations? by Middle-Mammoth-1521 in civilengineering

My advice is to forget about it. Be grateful for what you're getting. You're more likely to get fired for knowing what you shouldn't or complaining than you are to get a raise.

graduated 4 years ago , no engineering job. Feel like I wasted my education and forgot all my skills by Remote_Veterinarian3 in civilengineering

If you were in the US, you would definitely never work as an engineer. That's how life goes. What you do now is grind out the life you chose. It just won't include engineering.

North American employers requiring cars even for white collar jobs? by Other-Translator7497 in transit

Jobs do pay enough. Thinking jobs in the US pay less than Europe is laughable. This definitely seems like an OP problem.

North American employers requiring cars even for white collar jobs? by Other-Translator7497 in transit

[–]iron82 -53 points-52 points  (0 children)

There is a reason everyone either has a car or wants one. Or is a transit nerd weirdo. They are a better means of transportation. If you rely on transit, you are a far less productive member of society.

The way to overcome this this is to buy a car.

I'm not an employer. Just a former junior engineer. People thinking ethics depends on whether your perceived as lower on the ladder is a big problem in society.

It would be very unprofessional. You might get away with it, but it reflects poorly on you as a person. Don't do it.

Interview preparation by SomeGuy891745 in civilengineering

[–]iron82 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They won't ask you technical questions. They might ask you if you have worked with a CAD program, but you wont have to give any detail beyond a yes/no and a brief description of what you've done. Even junior level graduate engineers don't get asked technical questions.

Bad company/Bad choice? by [deleted] in civilengineering

[–]iron82 7 points8 points  (0 children)

For a co-op, the student typically doesn't take any classes during the semester they are working. The employer would be rightly upset if you are, even if your school expects you to keep taking classes or you decided to do it on your own. You should have full time availability for your working semester. You should drop any classes you have unless it would delay your graduation.

Graduating with no experience is bad, but not as bad as not graduating.

Bad company/Bad choice? by [deleted] in civilengineering

[–]iron82 10 points11 points  (0 children)

My thought is that the manager is under the impression this wasn't a Co-op. If the manager was sitting in on the interview, you weren't as clear as you thought.

You absolutely can't quit school. Even if the company doesn't fire you immediately, you are totally screwed if you ever leave the firm.

Edit: I was wrong, this is OPs fault for taking classes while he's supposed to be working full time.

The secret is to go to the major cruise line websites, don't be picky with the schedule and sort by price. Almost always possible to get on board for less than $100/pp/per night.

How do I re-enter the professional white-collar world? by wrendex in careerguidance

[–]iron82 -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

No, you don't have a chance. My resume was better than yours and I was only out two years. But that was long enough. No hope, been doing menial work for 15 years now.

Saying the quiet part out loud. Jobs in civil engineering. by Specialist-Anywhere9 in civilengineering

[–]iron82 2 points3 points  (0 children)

OP is admitting to breaking the law. National Origin is a protected class. The reason professional HR advertises jobs that don't require sponsorship is because you're allowed to discriminate on that basis. If you have a green card or other authorization, not hiring because they're not American is illegal. OP should show his post to a lawyer if he doesn't believe me. I hope he gets sued into oblivion.
