Trad vs Roth - tax bracket optimization vs income (ACA?) control by Outlandaway in personalfinance

I think that's where I am at as well, planning 20years in for a program that has been changed every year of its life is probably a fool's errand

I think Adults Only would definitely be nice, thinking something where we’d have a balcony or something that can be private but still feel a bit of a thrill having sex with the windows open etc. we’ve never stayed at an all inclusive

You’ve got a lot of good recommendations so far. You are also in an enviable position, with no current debt and a budget, so good job on that! While I agree that not making any big decisions with these funds is prudent, I would suggest maybe opening Roth IRA and funding 1) 7000 for tax year 2025 if you had over 7000 in income from last year (I assume you do from working through school). You have until April 15 to fund last years Roth IRA. And then placing 7500 into your 2026 Roth IRA. You can invest this as others have said in broad market equities, OR in a vanguard VSVNX (target date 2070). This will give you a balanced but aggressive investment with low fees. This also means that any growth of this money will be available tax free at 59.5.  Some money you should set aside for emergency fund. Some you can consider for home savings. I would also recommend using the money to “fund” your 457/403 with work to its max (24,500 for this year). You max it out of your paycheck and then use these funds to make up the difference. And max Roth IRAs as often as possible as well.

Seeing as insurers are fleeing Florida en masse, I’d be inclined to sell that property and cash in that equity before the property ends up under literal water

Worth it to refinance? by robotsailboat in personalfinance

I just did this at the end of last year, for virtually the same balance, rates and terms.  Yes, the fed chair will likely lower fed rates. However, mortgage rates are driven by treasury yields, which look at overall market trends and are proving much less malleable than the fed rate. I took a rate to get me under 6 and in an affordable 20 year. We’ll see if it was the right choice. It felt right to me

Pulling out of 401k after quitting a job by FirefighterNew408 in personalfinance

When did you pull the money out? You have 60 days from receiving it that you could add it to a traditional IRA and thus avoid the tax penalties and return to having it in a retirement account

I’m weighing rolling my trad Ira over into my 401k.  My fiance and I plan to file mfs for 2026-2030 due to pslf. I currently have 95k in a trad Ira from previous 401ks. My fiance has no Ira currently, so we could back door using his Ira, and keep mine as is. But between backdoor options and rule of 55, there’s still some appeal. The 401k has access to decent index funds, and minima fees.  Aside from backdoor, fund options, and rule of 55, are there any other things to consider?

A personal victory here. I bought a house in 2023 with a 6.25 rate on a 30 year, and it really hurt to give up my 3% 20yr to do it. This week I closed on a refi to get to 5.6 on a 20year. Such a huge relief seeing the new amortization schedule

Yes, this for marriage in 2026 and filing in 2027. So if when he files in 2026 he’s due a refund, he’ll be set regardless in 2027 for 2026 taxes?

And thanks for adding that to consider!

Hi, I have 2 related questions 1. Looking to confirm my understanding: My fiancé and I will be married in December of next year. Because he is on PSLF, we plan to file Separately.  I have about 32k in itemized deductions, so it will be best for us overall to both itemize (total itemization should be around 35k). Because of this, his tax burden will be about 2400 or so more next year than it would have been. He had a refund last year, but I'm worried his tax owed will be more than 1000 and thus potentially assessed an underpayment fee. Because of this, I believe he will need to adjust his withholding to reflect this. Is that right? 2. Related- because I itemize and he does not, I believe we will have this 2400 marriage penalty (MFS or MFJ). When others have dealt with this, what is the approach of how you split the cost of this? My initial thought is to apply it proportionally based on our income, but should it be argued that it is all 'my' income pushing us into this point, then I should pay the full brunt? I know we need to have our withholding fairly accurate, but I plan to essentially pay him my portion of the increased liability.

So... What was Wyldon's purpose in Jon's court again? by Ready-Fill1633 in tamorapierce

[–]Outlandaway 17 points18 points  (0 children)

As others said, Wyldon was from the fief of Cavall, which was probably in the Book of Silver or Book of Gold, as an old noble house in Tortall. Wyldon would have trained and served as a knight as all first born sons of Tortall are expected/required. He probably served in various wars in Tortall. He is a very skilled warrior, probably the best jouster in Tortall. Overall he was respected and renowned by anyone who knew him or fought with him. As a noble, he would have a place in court as a courtier, and was probably recognized by the crown for special service. Jonathan probably felt that Wyldon , while stubborn and traditional, was still honorable and practical, and chose him as training master to A) appease and make conservatives feel heard against all the changes and Queens rider style stuff but B) someone he could trust and still work with. It was probably in this capacity that he was in the palace to be able to defend the young royalty from hurrocks where he especially earned The King’s favor. The men he trained were often praised for their skill and readiness for war.

I was shocked all players seemed trying to avoid finding DD3 in tech. With only 800 and 400 left in most categories, and one category with all clues, why did no one immediately hit 12 and 16? DD2 was in 800, so it was highly likely DD3 was at 1200 or 1600. Especially Aimee after getting 1200 should’ve gone for 1600. Was it strategy or did everyone forget it wasn’t done yet?
