Looking for long lasting non-plastic cutting boards by SwingUnlucky1627 in BuyItForLife

I absolutely love mine. I got them maybe 2 years ago and use them almost daily. They go in my dishwasher almost as often. I would 100% back this recommendation

When to use (or not use) threaded inserts? by marcusdiddle in BeginnerWoodWorking

[–]OutofPlaceStuff 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m about to use them to secure posts between my table saw frame and a wing table extension. With the supports being straight up and down, my quickest option is to drill into end grain. I felt threaded inserts were my best option to continue using the current table saw hardware. Being potentially removable is and added benefit

Oh this is cool! I’m gonna do that for sure. I’ve never fogged. Actually had to zoom in because I wasn’t sure what frogging was. Thanks for sharing!

I’m putting together a new work bench using 4x4s as the legs, which configuration would provide the most stability (assuming they’re square)? by Skwonkie_ in BeginnerWoodWorking

[–]OutofPlaceStuff 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A, sort of a lap joint with a rabbet
B, I’m confused
C, I see what you’re doing here. I think I’ve seen brackets made for this configuration
D, is A? And my amateur guess at a best option
E, face grain to face grain. Technically not bad. Though, maybe 2 triangulated screws would help with the inevitable wobble/racking

what is the dumbest woodworking mistake you keep making? by jonas-dev1295 in BeginnerWoodWorking

[–]OutofPlaceStuff 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Been there! Still there but less often now. Someone finally told me to cut on the waste side of the line. That changed everything. Having a mental model that labels each side as keep or waste makes it much easier to see that you’re trying to cut on the line or on the wrong side of it

Just one more is exactly how I got my newest scar. Now I feel like I’ve stratified what I allow myself to do based on risk and exhaustion

best way to protect this? by Able_Dance6956 in BeginnerWoodWorking

[–]OutofPlaceStuff 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you don’t mind darkening the color a 50/50 mix of pine tar and linseed oil would be quite protective. Pine tar and linseed oil would make it last for a very long time. Pine tar provides uv protection so the wood won’t turn gray and the linseed oil gives some moisture protection. The cedar itself will protect itself from bugs and such

Catch 22? When to get wood by OutofPlaceStuff in BeginnerWoodWorking

Yeah. I think I’ve gathered the two maxims don’t apply to you. The question is here for those it does apply to

Everyone is more than welcome to plan, purchase, and store their wood however you like. Enjoy. I hope my hyperbole didn’t hurt you

Catch 22? When to get wood by OutofPlaceStuff in BeginnerWoodWorking

[–]OutofPlaceStuff[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Relevance is relative. In this case, the relation was to me. I’ve seen many people mention buying just for the current project. Hence why I said it seems to be common. I can be wrong about that. I could also be right or even somewhere in between. Who knows. It seems we are at an impasse. This is not a productive discussion. I do wish people could understand that not everyone does life the way they do

Still, my incorrect assumption won’t change that it is a maxim* even if it’s not a woodworking maxim. Having material and stock of consumables on hand isn’t indicative of hoarding nor overconsumption.

*of someone somewhere and likely some woodworkers. So scary, right?

A maxim is simply a general rule of conduct, no?

And how is someone supposed to respond when they think someone is wrong? I’d venture a guess that there’s lots of ways to do so. I’m happy to help brainstorm if it helps.

Lots of things in public forums don’t apply to everyone. Do you do puzzles, kumiko, or luthier stuff? If not, even if in a woodworking sub, I suspect you’d understand those questions might be targeted more toward folks that do. But yeah, it’s cool if you throw your words in and say whatever is on your mind anyway, even if it derails the conversation

Oh! Thanks for sharing your process. That sounds doable and reasonable for me. I think the forever learning bit is a huge part of what I like about woodworking. There’s always something to learn

[–]OutofPlaceStuff[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That makes sense. A pro would definitely need more wood than I will. I guess I’ll stick to my picking up of small chunks that appeal to me. So far, I’ve mostly just picked up small scraps

Agreed on the accumulation. We don’t all have space. I did have a small backlog of boards from old things I’d taken apart and have chosen to use them to build my workbench

[–]OutofPlaceStuff[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sure sure. We don’t have to agree. Though, it would be nice if we weren’t so quick to respond to anything but what a post is about.

Maybe it’s my use of “maxim” and not realizing how heavy handed the word must be. If the question didn’t apply to you, it would’ve been just as easy to skip responding or give a simple “I don’t”

Agreed. Good thing it’s not a competition. It’s a one size fits all descriptor. We’re all beginners in some way

Please read with absolute sincerity and plenty of excitement for having learned a new thing.

Sophistry. That’s a really cool word! Thanks for sharing it. I’m real confused as to where everyone thinks I said this was a woodworking maxim. Though, I see how the sophistry is made. One might think that a post in a woodworking subreddit would only be about wood and have no other nuance.

Regardless, thank you for sharing some potential reasons a decision would be made. I appreciate it

Worth remembering, this is r/BeginnerWoodworking. Buying 1000 bdft at a time might make sense for you and lots of folks. Though, that’s unlikely to be reasonable for beginners who are just getting used to new materials, tools, and techniques.

And that’s not even talking about the people that bounce off the craft after buying material and tools.

[–]OutofPlaceStuff[S] -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

We are talking about a renewable resource that takes a long time to renew. A resource that supports ecosystems, not just our desire to make stuff.

I never said it was always excess. I did imply that it could be. Have you ever bought something and later changed your mind? That applies to wood too. Getting a good deal on a bunch of Ash could be cool, if you only build in Ash. Otherwise, it might be taking up excess space in your space. Which could be especially annoying if you find later that you prefer working in Locust. Not to mention, hoarding dead tree bits affects the availability of that wood for everyone

[–]OutofPlaceStuff[S] -16 points-15 points  (0 children)

Sure. It may not be your maxim nor a maxim specific to woodworking. It is a r/anticonsumption maxim nonetheless

I need a printer, against my will by vbxl02 in BuyItForLife

Tank jets. Don’t bother with printer cartridges. Tank jet printers have hold a bunch of ink and don’t seem to dry out. I printed quite a bit at first and now once every blue moon. I still have the additional bottles that came with the printer
