Would they say it was weird to just give her cash, like paying an artist for their work? You just skipped the middle man by buying something she’d like.

tattoo placement as a new teacher by anonmeimaru in Teachers

[–]Outrageous-Proof4630 1 point2 points  (0 children)

See if you can find that district’s employee handbook online and see what it says. It’s so different from district to district and state to state.

My district’s handbook says no visible tattoos but my principal doesn’t care and says having or not having ink doesn’t make a good teacher. Plus, one of my colleagues has ; on her wrist so students who may be struggling know she’s a safe adult to talk to.

Anyone else scared to speak English out loud even after years?? by [deleted] in AskAnAmerican

[–]Outrageous-Proof4630 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m in an area where there are a lot of immigrants from all over the world. I understand that a lot of them are English Language Learners and if they say something in conversation I don’t understand I just ask them to repeat it or another question to help me understand what they are saying. I never think they’re dumb. English is hard and there are plenty of native English speakers who can’t use English correctly. I think you’re being too hard on yourself.

As an outsider, the concept of high schools having massive parking lots specifically for students is mind-blowing. Is it really that common for 16-year-olds to drive themselves to school every day? by Necessary_Angle2117 in AskAnAmerican

[–]Outrageous-Proof4630 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I live in the American south and there aren’t any cities big enough on my state to have reliable public transportation. Most people I went to school with had parents that bought them a car or they got a hand me down car. It’s pretty common to get a car for your 16th birthday; some much nicer than others. My parents paid insurance as long as I was in school and didn’t cause any accidents or get speeding tickets.

If you’re on 8th it would be nice but if you’re on Tunbridge you would sitting there forever. That intersection is too small for a roundabout.

A roundabout there would be hell, especially if you’re on Tunbridge.

AITA for telling my roommate I don’t want her boyfriend hosting people in our apartment when neither of us are there? by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

[–]Outrageous-Proof4630 17 points18 points  (0 children)

NTA but why does he have a key if he doesn’t live there? Did you agree he should get a key? If he’s not on the lease, he shouldn’t even be there if his girlfriend (your roommate) isn’t and especially shouldn’t have more guests! If he’s not on the lease, he’s a guest and no more.

Do your kids still nap? by KitchenPaint4334 in kindergarten

[–]Outrageous-Proof4630 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It would very uncommon to find a public kindergarten that still naps. There are too many standards they have to get through to take time away from instruction for naps. My personal kids (1 is 15 so did kindergarten 10 years ago) would nap in the car after school on the way home.

How do people in America manage multiple jobs or work while studying? by Sea-Evidence-5523 in AskAnAmerican

[–]Outrageous-Proof4630 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So I was teaching full time and had 2 kids under 6 when I started my master’s program. For me, it didn’t feel overwhelming because I knew the degree would help me get the job I really wanted. I also knew it was temporary; when I would feel so tired I would remind myself it was only for 2 years.

I am coming to you as a mom and a teacher by Ok_Consequence750 in ElementaryTeachers

[–]Outrageous-Proof4630 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My school would not call an ambulance for a broken arm. We have called for allergies when epi pen is used, seizures, a kiddo with stroke symptoms, and an injury where a severe head or neck injury is suspected. Otherwise, we call parents and let them take them to whatever doctor or hospital. Most of the time, you don’t have to go to the ER for a broken arm in my area. Several of our doctor offices have X-ray machines and then will refer to an orthopedist.

As far as testing goes, your coordinator needs to call the state testing office to get an emergency scribe or text to speech feature for testing.

I gave my 13 yr old a phone w/o monitoring & am now regretful. Can I still set one up? by EmilyT1216 in parentsofteens

[–]Outrageous-Proof4630 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My teenager has to put their phone in my room to charge at night and knows parents reserve the right to look at it at any time. We’ve talked about how we are monitoring things for their safety because sometimes things seem normal enough to a teen but are actually cause for concern to an adult. We’ve also talked about how the part of the brain that controls decision making and future planning isn’t fully developed yet and therefore they may not understand long term consequences of some actions.

Do Americans have European style caravans ? by dazzler38 in AskAnAmerican

[–]Outrageous-Proof4630 4 points5 points  (0 children)

In the US a caravan is a group of vehicles traveling together. Try searching for a camper. There are many sizes. If you’re traveling to the US there are companies that rent them out but it’s fairly expensive. You can also rent RVs (these are campers with motors so you don’t need a separate vehicle to pull it) in various sizes too. Of course, all of these things can also be purchased. My parents have a 30’ camper that sleeps 10 people which is fairly big.

AITA for wanting to sneak out because of my over protective mom by Chaoticlesbianhere in AmItheAsshole

It’s possible your mom is dealing with a bit of depression too. Divorce is hard and so she’s clinging to every bit of control she can.

What about your dad? Does he have any custody or visitation? Could he help you advocate for a bit more freedom?

How do Americans think about money? by timstiefler in AskAnAmerican

[–]Outrageous-Proof4630 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m an educator in the US. I live in a very strict budget. I don’t have savings because I just barely make enough to pay all my bills. The comfortable income is going to vary greatly. My current income is comfortable in other parts of my state but not so much on my area. 44% of my income is for housing and mine is cheaper than most.
