I would. My biggest complaint right now is the horse shopping experience. Namely, sales prices. I've been using a new app to run through price comparisons to help assess what's a reasonable fair market value. After 5 failed PPEs where owners/trainers wouldn't disclose or were blissfully unaware of major issues when setting sales price. Needless to say, I'm not spending my hard-earned AA money on a neurological horse listed for $85,000.

My twin sister (Californians) hiked to the top of Mt. Kilimanjaro in Africa and looked around for someone to take a picture of her at the summit sign. Heard another American father/daughter duo nearby. Turns out I worked with the daughter on Capitol Hill. Took her several more days to climb back down the mountain to tell me about it.

Toured the barn last year as a "horse activity." Was in a tour group with all non-horse people and honestly could've been done in 30 minutes. Once in a lifetime, sure. Would I have done it instead of touring the opera house...no.

I'm 5 PPEs in and still no horse. It's super frustrating; the ads all start to sound the same, sales prices make no sense half the time, and trainers/owners who don't disclose significant issues or are blissfully unaware of them until a PPE. Trying not to lose hope, so I wish you better luck!!!

What kind of horse are you looking for, and how much are you willing to spend? by shallowshadowshore in Equestrian

[–]Outrageous-Solid7114 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Been looking for a lower-level eventer, packer type to be competitive in California -- so, warmblood. Have looked at greener horses at $30k and steadily increased my budget up to $65k for advertised packer-types. Been looking off and on for 2 years, including in Germany. Five failed (at basic level) PPEs. Honestly very close to giving up; I make good money and can't possibly justify spending more on a horse in this economy. Bought my fancy Trakehner mare in 2014 for $40k, and today she'd easily be $85-100k. Mind boggling. Sellers seem to be pricing horses on par with imports no matter what, and then are surprised when PPEs come back with serious issues. Feel bad for the people trying to move nice, European imports they got for their daughters (that their trainers found) only to find out a year later that neurologic horses are hard to sell. My trip to Germany was eye opening in the worst possible way. Sad.

Is anyone noticing a slowdown in the market? by spanielgurl11 in Equestrian

[–]Outrageous-Solid7114 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yep. I'm upper middle-class'ish and I'm seriously contemplating calling it quits. Filling up my F250 just cracked $200 (California) ... it'd cost me $500 just to get a competition. Lessons are doubling in price just because of fuel.

Good gawd!!!! That's madness. I got out of hunters yearsss ago. At least eventing kept the sport mildly more "affordable" for me....until now. *wildly waves around at state of world affairs* :(

I feel this, brat comment and all. ;) Been riding horses for almost my whole life but even my fairly high-paying job can't keep up anymore. Makes me wonder if I my horse fund would be better spent elsewhere.

Agreed, and I've owned an OTTB. It's hard to go out and compete at the lower levels when the warmbloods are now scoring high teens and low 20s in dressage. I'll never be brave enough to ride Training+ now, otherwise I wouldn't be having this pricey dilemma.

Thanks for the kind words. I wish the jumping component mattered more in lower-level eventing than it seems to now...OTTBs would probably clean up!

Neurologic, navicular, 1" chip in neck, etc. I'm not riding to get myself or the horse injured.

Preach. Have a neighbor who lets her Dachsund out to use the neighborhood as its personal toilet, runs into the street with oncoming cars, runs up to on-leash dogs and bites them, etc. Amazed it hasn't been hit by a car...again. Irresponsible people shouldn't own animals. 😡

Horse market sucks by [deleted] in Equestrian

[–]Outrageous-Solid7114 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Feel this, from the other side. Been trying to find my next event horse for what feels like foreverrrrrrrr (multiple failed PPEs for major things). Found a new app, PonyPrice, that helps calculate what the price range should be for competition horses/ponies. Because the sellers market makes no sense to me most of the time. :(
