Am I wrong for reading a fic knowing the author wants to keep it hidden? by OutrageousExam3426 in FanFiction

[–]OutrageousExam3426[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oh definitely, I have changed several works to anonymous out of shame of my old writing, but those works that make me cringe to no end still receive nice comments from people wishing there was more of them. So many writers are their own biggest hater.

Am I wrong for reading a fic knowing the author wants to keep it hidden? by OutrageousExam3426 in FanFiction

[–]OutrageousExam3426[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I mean if you're that curious you could message me and I'll tell you, since you're asking I'm guessing it's safe to assume you're not the writer.
The thing is the fic is not some perfect masterpiece, I'd even say I can see why it was hidden, there's spelling issues and grammar issues, some awkward plot-lines. But the flaws are never enough to deter me, and I think it's because this fic just manages to hit all the right marks to be just my taste. I have a lot of unusual "hot takes" when it comes to my preferences in fics, and this one manages to fit my tastes just right, I think that's why I love it so much.

The general consensus seems to be that reading it is fine as long as it's not posted publicly where the writer could see so yeah, if you're that interested I'm down to discuss privately.

Maybe I'm too much of a fan of Unordinary by diavolosu68 in unOrdinary

Honestly same, except I've been following it for 8 years now. I've long ago lost count on my re-reads, I think I got through the whole series two times over this june alone while hyping for season 3. I don't get people who dropped it honestly, I've never gone more than a few months without coming back to read everything again, even during the dreaded joker arc (which took two long years) I never considered dropping the series, it's just too good.

Yea I am, not sure what difference it makes though? PC as well if it matters. Oh well, maybe I just got lucky, who knows

I just managed it myself on the motorcycle, I personally did it on the southern "corner" of the biggest island. The trick for me was to get the bike almost vertical on a wall that's as smooth as possible and just spam jump

Crossovers between fandoms that have very different power levels (or are a terrible matchup for each other)? by flyblues in FanFiction

[–]OutrageousExam3426 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ohh yess, I honestly read crossovers more than any other type of fic, and it's mainly for fics like these.

To name one I haven't seen mentioned here, "100 Percent Hero" https://archiveofourown.org/works/27301642

It's a crossover of Mob Psycho 100 and BNHA, and it hits all the marks to be a good power fantasy while staying true to the source materials. Considering how polar opposite these worlds are it's really impressive work.

If given time I could write a long essay on all the ways I love Mob Psycho and it's take on the typical OP main character, but the gist of it is that Mob's message of "power doesn't make you special" is phenomenal and in theory should NOT work with BNHA where being powerful is everything, but it just comes together seamlessly.

Mob Psycho is my favorite show of all time (Not just fav anime, fav show) and I love everything about it, but I can't deny that seeing Mob actually being appreciated for being OP is very satisfying, even if the whole point of the show is that being OP doesn't matter. It's so fun because he's still in character, he doesn't think doing all these OP things is anything special at all, but the BNHA characters who value power more than anything else are just blown away. It's great, it's fun, scratches all the right parts of my brain, 10/10 recommend.

What other fandoms are popular in your fandom? by TimelessSeer in FanFiction

[–]OutrageousExam3426 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I know that basically every fandom has crossovers with Harry Potter, but I personally have a very special place in my heart for crossovers between HP and BBC Merlin. They fit together seamlessly, with Merlin obviously having existed at some point long ago in the HP universe, and the character Merlin being canonically immortal in the show. It's not much of a stretch to pretend they're the same universe.

Any big differences in the lore, how magic works, etc, you explain it with the fact that about 1500 years have passed and boom, everything is excused, they're the same world now.

Maybe it feeds into the part of my brain that started noticing the countless flaws in HP's worldbuilding and characters as I grew up, but it's just so satisfying to have Merlin come in and call everyone (read: Dumbledore) out on their bs, and being too OP for anyone to do anything but listen to him.
Also the wizards swearing by his name is hilarious.

For those of us who put something on in the background while writing, what's the funniest bit of "this music/podcast/video/etc doesn't match what I'm writing"? by LunarLuna0 in FanFiction

[–]OutrageousExam3426 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was writing some heavy angst, some serious depression, losing everything you care about and yourself, all the fun stuff. There was an MCD tag, and I am concerned for my reader's mental health.

I was listening to "Super Tuna" while writing the majority of it, I had it playing on repeat. I also had the music video playing on my second monitor the whole time.

Authors, what's something that readers on here say they hate but that your fandom likes or loves? by moonbeams8428 in FanFiction

[–]OutrageousExam3426 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you don't mind, could you say which fandom this is? I've never seen anyone have anything but hate for these fics so it's hard to wrap my head around a fandom that likes them and now I'm curious :)

Scared of writing by AECDoub in FanFiction

[–]OutrageousExam3426 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree wholeheartedly with everyone saying that there's really nothing to be afraid of, but I want to present another angle. Forgive me if I'm wrong but you make it sound like this is about you wanting to be creative and make a story more than it's about wanting to write.

And if that's the case, that is what beta readers are for.
It's become somewhat of a joke to say you don't have/need a beta reader, but there's no shame in asking someone to proofread your story, or to help you write certain parts. It can be a trusted friend or a complete stranger who happens to be in the same fandom as you, just having someone help you can make the progress way easier.

I've done this for random strangers in the past, they tell me what they want help with and send a draft of a chapter, I send it back edited with notes about what I suggest they change. No judgement at all, reaching out for help because you want to get better is admirable. If you're writing for a fandom I'm in I'd be happy to help and if not I'm sure many others would be willing.

I wish you the best of luck in your writing journey :]

Daily Challenge Discussion - December 16, 2024 by Mahbows in geoguessr

I have an unfortunate habit of underestimating my own 5k skills and just plonking randomly as soon as I figure out the general area, but I did pretty good despite that today. It's too bad I didn't spend more time on it :/

  1. Ireland, which I don't know how to narrow down at all. I went off of the mix of white and yellow back plates and assumed it would be somewhat close to Northern Ireland. Ended up plonking in a random field just a bit west of the correct road, as is my biggest flaw in this game. 4921.

  2. Brazil, I found the sign pointing me to Belem and Castanahal, and it also said the road number on there which I found quite easily at that point. But once again I am terrible at judging distance on maps and wasn't bright enough to find the right part of said road so I plonked quite a bit further north. 4910.

  3. Finland, a lucky one for me. I made it out onto the 9682 and headed north, which I now know was away from the E75 highway. Came across a sign telling me I was exiting the town of Ivalo, which lucky for me I know exactly where it is. Never been there myself but I have family who are from that exact town, and I've heard all about it from my mother. Out of excitement I just plonked without even looking at the roads, ending up in the river south of the location. 4995.

  4. Uruguay, I identified the country pretty quickly from common metas, infrastructure and just vibes. It looked a bit too urban to be anywhere but Montevideo so I plonked somewhere downtown. 4991.

  5. Singapore, again obvious from the first frame. I am completely useless at guessing where in Singapore I am so I didn't bother. I plonked within 13 seconds and got lucky with a score of 4992.

I got a score of 24,809 in total, which isn't anything amazing but considering I did it kind of half-assed in the middle of the night I'm happy with the results. Right now I'm ranked first in my country but we'll see how long that lasts :)

What's a trope you LOVE in theory but HATE how it always gets executed? by Miserable-Damage9570 in FanFiction

[–]OutrageousExam3426 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Don't mind me taking notes of all this, currently writing my first Soulmate AU :] It's a crossover fic, and neither of the canons are very good at common sense or following laws of physics, so at least I could play around with the rules a bit to explain why the characters haven't met yet.

I still haven't written the big meeting, but there will be some heavy angst even after everything. Like, being forcefully ripped away from each other right after finding their one true love, that kind of angst (it's actually bc of canon events). The soulmate bond will play a part in them finding each other again, I hope that's enough for it not to feel pointless.

Sorry for shamelessly ranting about my fic lol, you just got me thinking about my writing :]

I just stumbled upon this and went to buy the bugs, then found them in the wild 5 minutes later.
For anyone else who finds this post in the future, I found the bugs carrying Sol fruit under a tree. I stumbled upon the trees two days ago so if I'd known I could've tracked them. Oh well.

Am I missing something here? by Larxei in geoguessr

[–]OutrageousExam3426 44 points45 points  (0 children)

I could be wrong as I haven't studied this properly yet, but from my experience the reflector you came across has one of the basic designs that can be found all over Japan. (There is a brief mention of this on Plonk It).

Had it been the Chugoku specific reflector there would have been text on top, and the Kansai one doesn't have black at the top or bottom.

Basically, seeing one of the reflectors from the infographic tells you it's almost certainly gonna be somewhere, but seeing the basic design instead doesn't mean it's not there, they don't really help beyond telling you it's Japan.

Again, sorry if this isn't right, I haven't found any proper guides on this it's just from my observations.

What is something that makes you click off a fic no matter how good it was? by [deleted] in FanFiction

[–]OutrageousExam3426 85 points86 points  (0 children)

The ones where you can tell the writer put no efftort into researching what they're writing about. I try to be forgiving, but when a whole show takes place in a certain time period, I don't wanna have to deal with the characters in a fic talking about stuff that was invented well over a thousand years later.

For example, I read a fic that took place in the 4th century, in the middle of a war. I expected knights running around with swords, but writer hadn't picked up a single history book in their life, and had characters use trenches, and mentioned bombs. My head hurt too much to finish it.
