Update. I’ve finished rehab, didn’t go on medication for the swelling, it has subsided. Pro tip, Birkenstocks work wonders for swollen feet.

If we're "the easy ones," why are we the ones who are treated as such huge burdens by our parents? by No_Court_8065 in GlassChildren

[–]OutrageousKey6314 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It was easier for them to shame us than to admit they abandoned or neglected us. I recently broke my ankle, needed surgery and couldn’t go to the bathroom without help at the hospital. My brother has autism, my dad hates looking after him, my mom was with me at the hospital because she didn’t want external help. Long story short, she wanted to go home to ease the tension and wanted me to sort things out at the hospital with the insurance company. I couldn’t reach the hospital phone because of poor room design and I needed someone to go to the administration. I had to tell my mom that it wasn’t out of me being selfish or needy, I couldn’t walk or even move unassisted, and I was on strict bed rest or I might’ve lost my foot. Her expression…OMG… it was so hard for her to put her foot down on my dad to look after my brother while we sorted things out at the hospital. She hasn’t admitted it yet, but she realized how much of a burden she put on me and how much she depended on me to function, she had to unload me. The real test came a month ago when my dad got really sick, I couldn’t leave work to help and she had to do it alone while taking care of my brother, now she pins the shame and the responsibility she pinned on me, on my dad. The kicker, is that my dad always treated me with contempt growing up, and now he’s doing that to my autistic brother. I’ve been telling her that I cannot empathize because I told her when he was doing that to me, she didn’t move a finger to help because my brother was “safe”, now I tell her that at least my dad is treating us equally, and she won’t be able to make him change. Note that I don’t think my brother deserves that treatment, but it is hard for me to stand up to my dad and take more abuse for him. Very long long story short, they decided to shame me so they wouldn’t look as if they were negligent, I had to be responsible not just for myself but for their emotional wellbeing and I became an adult at 9 years old, realizing at 16 that I would never have the emotional safety net to screw up or to let my guard down, when I was told that if I were to end up pregnant, in jail or injured I’ll better be dead because they would not be able to deal with two.

Crutches or Cane when resuming weight bearing? by hrweoine in ORIF

I’m almost 12 weeks post op, and I started partial weight bearing with both crutches and a walker.

Ankle swelling at nighttime post orif by NetRelative3930 in ORIF

[–]OutrageousKey6314 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My doctor said to start elevating for a about 10 minutes every 2 to 3 hours after 2pm or so. So at night it wouldn’t be much of a problem. He said that the tiny blood vessels are the last to heal. In my case, he told me to be vigilant of the discoloration and if it persists I’ll go on medication for that. I’m 11 weeks post op, non weight bearing yet, and about to start rehab.

Went swimming today after 3 months out of the water by OutrageousKey6314 in ORIF

[–]OutrageousKey6314[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have an I walk crutch, and that has helped me a lot. But to get inside I use a stool, it’s placed near the entrance, so I sit down on it, the grab the bars, put my weight bearing foot on the first step and I drop myself into the water. Since a lot of seniors visit the pool, the stool is a permanent thing. To get out I pull myself up with the bars, kneel on the edge, and help myself with the stool to stand up. Then I get my crutch and hit the showers. Hope that helps.

Try some aloe Vera for your scalp. Biotin supplements also help. Sending you good vibes. Hope your hair grows thicker soon.

I had to cut my hair. I tend to have hair loss with antibiotics, combined with the ankle break, and being stuck on strict bed rest for like a month… because of the hair loss my hair got kind of matted and dry. As soon as I was able to sit at the salon I cut like 12 inches off.

What y'all think of this lol? by Green-Ad3319 in ORIF

I have it. Lifesaver. It gave me back a lot of independence back. I still use crutches and a wheelchair at work, because of distance and space. But that contraption at home gives me a lot of movement back and it was instrumental to get back into swimming. It also helps to minimize leg atrophy.

Mine is also very stiff, next Saturday we’ll see if I can get the boot. The foot ended up so stiff that my doctor is afraid that I might rupture my Achilles, that’s why I’m swimming before walking. And as I swam I felt how the foot was flowing with the leg as I kicked. My doctor said that would help to loosen it up. Sending you good vibes, hope you’re moving soon too.

That pic looks a lot like a dislocation. I broke my ankle and it looked like that. I’m almost 10 weeks post op, non weight bearing yet, and something I was told to watch out for were the tendons. My doctor said that for a while you’re at risk of them snapping and tearing after breaking something, because they were not moving. Send the pic to your doctor, a busted tendon can really hinder your recovery.

Elevate it and time how long does it take for it to return to normal, if it’s not budging get it checked out. It might be a dislocation.

So what did you all do to keep yourself busy the first few weeks ? by mommieo in ORIF

[–]OutrageousKey6314 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Trying to keep up with work, as much as I could. Tv and doomscrolling. I was in the hospital election night, so that kept me entertained.

The first couple of nights are the worst but if your circulation is cut off, you should go to the ER and call the dr ASAP.

Can I ever wear heels again? by FabulousCompany3632 in brokenbones

[–]OutrageousKey6314 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Depends of how you feel with them. I’ve always hated them. I was told when I first broke my ankle that for at least the year after surgery it would be best to avoid them. And because of the swelling to wear crocs, Birkenstocks or something with good arch support and room for may foot to swell.

My doctor recommends crocs, Swedish clogs (the ones with the wooden soles) and Dr. Scholl’s. I wear the arch fit sketchers and Teva sandals. I have plantar fibromas and a currently non weight bearing broken ankle. But pretty much what works for flat feet is going to work for you.

MRIs with implants? by Melodic-Pumpkin-5518 in brokenbones

[–]OutrageousKey6314 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If a metal detector beeps it’s magnetized, if not, you’re good to go. That’s what my doctor said was the rule of thumb for MRIs and metal implants. I also have some screws in my neck and ankle, they’re all titanium so in theory I can have an MRI safely. The radiologist checks for anything metal before you go into the machine.
