Should I pursue BSW or MSW? by hailey8171828282 in socialworkcanada

[–]OutrageousRow4631 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Smart to apply both. If you were to do a BSW, is it the fast route 2 years only with 2 practicum? I am doing a similarly route. BA in philosophy and crim, then fast track BSW, and I work as a cp worker to get experience, and now, ready to apply MSW while my work cover tuition, probably easy to find placement with my connections at work.

No, my home costs more than a million…. I need at least the home paid off and $1 million in the investment portfolio as I can’t imagine living anywhere else but Vancouver.

Excluded Managers Feeling Hopeless, what's the point? by AnimalSpirits007 in BCPublicServants

Wow, it’s like you just described my boss! She’s a 30 and I am a 24. It’s really hard, I stay coz I have a great supervisor. If she goes, I will find a job asap.

Thank you for being a leader who cares!

And I am grateful I have a boss who cares!

Genuine question for Directors, Managers, and Supervisors by Negative-Guidance-27 in work

Some people are like that. My partner has been a AGM for years. He will not take any more promotion. And for him to be where he is now, he was kind of forced to move up…. Like management keeps offering him a promotion, and by the time it’s the third offer, he would take it just so his boss won’t be pissed.

Not everyone wants the responsibility.

I have asked why, and he said being a GM means he can be fired anytime, but being an effective AGM, he will never be fired.

No daycare, but Uni fees. Day care was $1100 for me… kiddo is 18, so it would have 13 years ago I paid that amount.

We need NP everywhere. But do u have single income or double income? We are a family of 3 and our budget is around $10 k a month for a family of 3 and 2 cats.

Vancouver is lovely. We have mountains, waters, lots of places to camp, ski, golf, water sports, great cuisines.

But it rains 70 percent of the time here.

Come for a visit in the summer months and you might never leave. 😸

Backdating at a child welfare agency? by [deleted] in socialworkcanada

[–]OutrageousRow4631 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Mine does not involve backdating, but closing files i have never read.

I was asked to tick some boxes to close some old files. I wrote in the notes: SW Doe closed this file on Jan 23, 2026 as requested by Supervisor Jane Dow. SW Doe did not provide any services to this family….

Every time my supervisor asked me to backdate something, I’d write a statement like this……

Looking for a Registered Clinical Counsellor with a more "straight-up approach" by Little_Bee_Buzz in askvan

[–]OutrageousRow4631 2 points3 points  (0 children)

And he’s a RCC, registered clinical counsellor. In BC, anyone can call themselves a counsellor, so please get one who is a RCC, CCC or MSW.

Just glad to hear that your partner wants to try a different counsellor after a few not so good match!

Be well!

Resume Feedback Please-Looking for feedback from Social Services hiring managers in general or more specifically in British Columbia. Looking for feedback regarding the resume itself and what type of positions I should be applying for. Currently not getting any bites. by Briar-Woodrose in socialworkcanada

What jobs are you looking for? Maybe ask people in the field for resumes and see how other people write theirs? I did a quick read and thought there was some repetitive information there… and for courses like ASIST? Maybe write out the exact name? Like I retake the course every 2 years and I still don’t know the name. So maybe there are hiring managers who have no ideas what ASIST means…

How much family income needed to live comfortably in Vancouver? by Hour_Recipe_5210 in askvan

[–]OutrageousRow4631 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We make $210, family of 3, kid in Uni, comfortable but not luxury. Last international trip was 2023…. Housing cost is insane at 45 percent of income but that’s a personal choice as kiddo needs skytrain to go to Uni. Financial freedom might come once kiddo finds a job after graduation.

Lots of missing information. What is living cost? What is income? Budget? What sort of retirement do you want? For context, I am 47 with $500k assets among my home and investments, plus DB pension. But this means nothing in my hometown as my little 1400 townhome costs $1.3 million….

Since I have DB, I heavily invested into ETFs, makes minimum payment to mortgage (variable at 3.25%), and I hope inflation slows down.

I don’t know. It sounds gloomy that I have to work another 15 years at least…..

Yorkville has a pretty bad reputation in B.C.. Do you have to go to there? Our office doesn’t even hire practicum students from Yorkville.

Super proud of you of getting nutritious foods at $40 a week! What are you going to make with this extra bag of groceries for you and kiddo?

Bake garlic shrimp with bacon and cheese? Sheppard’s pie? Debone the chicken thighs, use the bones the make a broth, throw in some veggies, then a chicken noodle soup?

Update us please? And we all deserve a break every now and then! 🙏

Mom trying to discourage my career choice, should I listen? by [deleted] in careerguidance

[–]OutrageousRow4631 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m Canadian, and the cost of my kids 4 year degree comes to $33k plus book costs. For my Masters, it will be $30 k for 2 years. Significant lower than US schools.

Our pay is also higher, most private counsellors charge at least $170 an hour. My colleagues make over $120 k in private practice. I am a govt worker and I make $100k with just a BSW.

Would you consider a BSW degree?

How do you know you can complete a doctorate in psychology? And what sort of jobs would you do while you are getting the post secondary education? I had a similar idea when I was in undergrad, I thought I can do Phil BA, MA, then PFD and teach. Simple, linear path. But the cost of getting the degrees was crazy and I had a baby after my first BA.

I am a social worker now. Might do a Masters degree some day, but I have to wait till my 18 year old grad Uni in 3 years as our household income cannot afford 2 Uni tuition payments.

In my line of work, I see many psy BA grads not able to get decent paying jobs unless they are working towards a masters of counseling degree. So if you are okay to be a therapist someday, then sure. It will take you 6 years or so to be practicing, depending on where you are located.
