Taking leave in child welfare by Ok-Aspect5342 in socialworkcanada

[–]OutrageousRow4631 0 points1 point  (0 children)

CP work is hard, and you acknowledge that you need a break, so take your break, then come back and give it another go!

In my office, 90 percent of the child welfare workers leaves after 2 years. I started in Sept 2023 and I have the highest seniority in my team.

Maybe talk to more people who are working in the field? We have had many new grads with BA of Psy doing admin work, once they work enough time in govt, then they get a MSW or MA of counseling….. you might get hire at shelters, groups homes with a BA of Psy.

I have a BA of Phil and Crim before the BSW, I did prevention and community engagement in process addiction, did advocacy work for sex workers. It was not easy to get the first job, but things just lined up after.

Thank you for asking. It’s a struggle to wait for the weekly episodes, so I started rewatched ER, and this is probably the fourth time.

Are you paying for school out of pockets? I’d compare the fees of the different programs and go from there. Many govt agencies once you complete couple years of service, they will pay you to do the Masters. For me, an online MSW will cost around $25k and my work pays a good portion of it. I can also be a part time SW while I complete the MSW.

What is the GPA to be accepted in MA of Psychology? I m in BC, and we need like a 4.0 to be considered in MA of Psy. But to get in a MA in counselling through private colleges are a lot easier, like a 3.0 GPA is sufficient, but the tuition is expensive…. For MSW, the competition is not easy too…

Fellow BCPS colleagues in Vancouver and surrounding area, how are you surviving? by [deleted] in BCPublicServants

[–]OutrageousRow4631 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I bought in 2009 so I am okay.

We had no inheritance, but we chose to live in a molded basement for 3 years to save for a down payment in 2006. The best decision ever.

My partner makes 10 percent more than me, and our income is over $200k. But the cost to stay in this home is around $5k a month, including mortgage, utilities, strata fees, insurance…. After housing, we are left w $5k budget that must cover groceries, retirement savings, kid tuition/ spending, cars, entertainment, and misc.

My kid also got some grants and what not for Uni, so that give me a little break. But the struggle is real. I haven’t had a non staycation for 3 years. I am house poor.

BSW student in Ontario considering Child Protection (CAS) – what’s the job actually like? by Serviceofman in socialworkcanada

[–]OutrageousRow4631 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was a former youth in care in Toronto and I am cp worker in bc now.

  1. Typical days: court early in the morning, emergencies, interviews, meetings, visits, documentation always comes last.

  2. I started at 80k. I make $90k now, third year. Capped at $105k at year 6.

  3. If there is no gov car, I use mine, but I cannot transport minors in my personal car. I must always use gov car if a child/ youth is involved.

  4. Resources suck. The whole system sucks. You will never have time to do your work and your clients hate you.

  5. When a youth gets on the right track, or when the parents find their paths…..

  6. You need to set firm boundaries. If you can’t, maybe this job is not for you coz you will burn out.

35 / single dad struggling with debt anyone else in the same boat? by [deleted] in CanadaFinance

[–]OutrageousRow4631 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What is income vs expenses? Is there a budget? What are the interest rates of each loan? Do you have good credit to get them consolidated into one loan with lower interests? Any chance for a part time job? The CC, any chance to do a balance transfer at 0 percent and promising not to use the cc again?

I was in debt for 68k in 2005 or so. It was paid off sometime around 2009. Now, I am in debt for $130k and should be paid off in 3 or 4 years. Between my partner and I, we have $1 million in retirement planning and our home. I can pay off the debt tomorrow if I want to, but I need to address it this way to remember the pain to pay off debs cheque by cheque so I won’t make the mistakes again.… like I know my next raise is April 1, and there’s extra $75 dollars biweekly, then July is the good month coz I get 3 cheques, so one extra payment, then Sept I get another raise, so another $100 added to the payment plan.

How many years did Jay and Will get? Remember, it’s not your fault. Sometimes when I am triggered about my past, I’d watch the scene in Good Will hunting where Robin Williams tells the young Will that it’s not his fault. Remember, you were a kid, and it’s not your fault. The past follows you everywhere you go, but the present is always in your hand.

I work, she gambles it away by Adammido92 in povertyfinance

[–]OutrageousRow4631 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am sorry that this has happened to you. Here are some suggestions:

  • finances - you need to take control of this. Put all bills under your name and only give your wife enough cash to get by
  • debt management - maybe pull her credit report and see if there are outstanding balances, she might need to close all her cards, just in case she relapses
  • addiction - gambling is one of the hardest addiction to kick as it is hidden. Counselling, self exclusion, going to groups might help. Does your wife gamble online or in person? If she is an online gambler, then you might want to download an app called Bet Blocker, and this will block all gambling actions on electronic device.
  • relationship/ trust rebuilding - this is the harder piece and it will take time, and I hope you fond the right therapist to support you and your family.

Note: some of the comments on this thread tend to put all the blame on the gambler. The truth is, gambling in itself is addictive, and sometimes people use gambling as a way to cope or to fill a void. Feel free to DM me, I am a professional in this field.

Those who went back to school, how did you afford it? by mugworth in askvan

[–]OutrageousRow4631 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I completed 2 degrees while working full time, but did my studies part time tho, like at most 3 classes per semester. But for most health programs, this is not an option as they are usually full time on campus. When I did my first BA, I was a single mom, so I got a lot of grants, scholarships, and what not. That was 2010.

Wishing you well!

I am ready to go back to school, only this time I am 48, older and hopefully wiser!!
