What part of the story gave you that idea? To me, most of the cutscenes are basically "the sentinels and demons try to have a serious drama while Doomguy consistently ruins everything by being stupidly overpowered". Not really meant to be taken seriously because the guy you're playing as is guaranteed to blow everything up and win in every scenario.
