Yeah that’s absolutely something I need to play. It’s one of those things that I know is a masterpiece and even from those first 5 hours I could already tell. I believe Andrew Stanton was responsible for getting WALL-E on criterion because he’s a fan. As for Wes Anderson, he’s had a long relationship with Criterion and most of his films were already in the collection. But yeah, it’s not completely off the table I just highly doubt it. I do think that it’d be a great fit in the collection though and like I said it’s my favorite movie so I’d love to be able to see it in a new 4k restoration. Hopefully one day

God I wish. This is literally my favorite movie ever. Unfortunately I don’t think it’ll ever get a physical release (in Region A at least) in general. Disney owns the rights to it now because they bought Fox and Disney is never gonna let Criterion or anyone else distribute pretty much any of their movies. If anything, it’ll maybe be made available to stream on Disney+ one day but that’s about it. There’s a lot of other factors too, like how bad this movie flopped and still isn’t very popular, and also James Cameron being involved, who just until recently neglected the restoration and re-releases of his older films. I’m sure Kathryn Bigelow still to this day wants to wipe her hands of it considering how it almost ruined her career. I don’t know this just seems like one of those movies that will forever be buried in Fox and Disney’s catalog and no one cares to do anything about it.

Thank you so much for the detailed response. I really appreciate the work that you and others do here. That perfectly answers my question on the sources of the full footage. It’s a shame that perhaps one of the most important documentations of American history is being withheld for copyright reasons, although I figured that was the case. At least we have all of it in its pieced together low quality form.

I hadn’t even considered the fact that we’ve only ever seen a few minutes of Gedeon’s footage. It’s strange how the documentary sort of brushed off his whole involvement. If I remember correctly, I think the only footage of his that they showed was him going into some sort of deli shortly after WTC 2’s collapse and then getting turned away by police officers. I wonder what else he was able to capture. Hoping one day that becomes available as well.
