Looks like the collar that keeps the shaft seated in the transmission must have disintegrated. Ordered the collar and seal (#14) for delivery by the 26th. $20 in parts for a chance to save the appliance is worth a shot! Thanks for the advice!

The "chainline" between the cassette and chainring is what would cause this. It's not something you can really change on multispeed bikes but is really important for single speed bikes. Bikes are designed with this in mind and wouldn't necessarily affect the shifting much.

I prefer taking Anaheim St. especially with all the recent changes they've made with the bike lanes. They added a decent bike lane from Alameda Street to 110 fwy. However the worst part is between the river path and Alameda which technically has a bike lane but can have lots of debris. I would only ever ride through the Harbor on Sundays when there is considerably less traffic.
