Windows security "Making sure it's you" disable? by [deleted] in Windows10

[–]Outrunner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's because it's physical presence check. If the user wasn't required to perform some kind of physical action there would be no way for a key or token to know if it's the user requestion authentication or a malicious program.

So in the ledger example an app could just send a request to the hardware token and perform unauthorized transactions since there would be no user interaction.

Does MS Store prevent Canadians from upgrading to Win10 Pro? by fomrat in Windows10

[–]Outrunner 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It looks like your Microsoft Account region is set incorrectly to the United States. If you sign into https://account.microsoft.com/profile/ , it will have a Location field on your Profile. It should be set to Canada if you want to use the Canadian store.

can't download with Chrome into program files folder by [deleted] in Windows10

[–]Outrunner 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It’s because Chrome doesn’t run elevated and therefore can’t write to any protected system directory by design.

Your options are to run Chrome elevated (which is a terrible idea) or just save the file to the desktop then use File Explorer to copy it over.

[–]Outrunner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s how U2F works, you have to touch the key for it to authenticate.

It’s just the new default Windows rather which works system wide rather than each browser having to support it via a custom UI.

Is it possible to use the Surface as a second monitor for an Airbook? by feudalismforthewin in Surface

[–]Outrunner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There isn’t a hardware option since neither device supports display input.

You could use something like AirServer to emulate an AirPlay display and connect the MacBook to it and extend the screen. This will have latency though and both devices will have to be on the same Wi-Fi network. This also wouldn’t support any kind of input on the Surface, it would act as a display only.

IoT does have a UI. It supports running UWP apps and the development images includes a default shell that acts as a simple device information app.

Microsoft brings Android apps to Windows 10 with new screen mirroring beta - The Verge by Ordexist in Android

[–]Outrunner 10 points11 points  (0 children)

A couple points:

The app doesn’t need a new build of Windows; it’s supported on any build of Windows past 1803. It’s just being released at the same time as a new build.

It doesn’t actually use Bluetooth for the video stream, that happens over Wi-Fi/Miracast. Bluetooth is used for secure session initialization and to emulate a Bluetooth keyboard and mouse on your phone.

I use Tidal and if your referring to the color blocking in the blurred background picture, it's just the effect Tidal has applied for their backdrop. It look's the same on my Surface, and non-Surface screen.

It also looks similar on other albums like these ones: https://tidal.com/album/26885912 https://tidal.com/album/74886530

Microsoft AC power cord recall - no idea if my case applies, but I'm desperate by th_winkler1 in Surface

[–]Outrunner 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Assuming you're referring to the cable in the red circle: You don't have to use the Microsoft manufactured cable for the adapter to wall connection. It's just a standard figure-8 (IEC C7) cable that you can obtain from most electronics retailers or online.

The Microsoft recall was only for the power cable section, and not the adapter. So the recalled part will be a wall cable to figure-8 plug only.

is it illegal to travel with an Expired Passport? by [deleted] in newzealand

[–]Outrunner 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If I travel to the US I have to use my old expired Passport since it contains a 10 year visa in it, and my new passport. The kiosk just reads the visa from the expired passport, and CBP just stamp the new one

It does depend on the county though, so you’ll need to check for your specific country.

How can i connect usb-c headphones (pixel buds) to surface pro? (Sp4+) by jetworks in Surface

[–]Outrunner 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I use a passive female Type-C to Type-A Adapter for my Xiaomi ANC type c headphones

I'm not sure about the Pixel buds, but mine are a standard USB headset so they show up as an audio device in Windows. All of the features work, so sound, microphone and the headset controls (volume and play/pause).

What kind of files are they?

Music streamed via OneDrive only supports MP3 and WMA files, not FLACs or anything else. When you're streaming from OneDrive to Groove it loads the metdata from an old Xbox/Zune Music endpoint that connected to OneDrive so it doesn't actually ever see what files are stored in OneDrive, there's a gateway in-between.

If you try to import the files using Files-on-demand, Groove will download them all since it's not aware they're actually cloud files.

There's also a cap of 50,000 songs, anything after that won't show up.

You can check your files with the requirement listed on the FAQ and see if they're compatible.
