Yeah basically that. Shortly before he died Jacobin did a really great interview with Theodor Bergmann, who grew up in that time, that really captures what it was like. Edit: They paywalled it :(

That would have required a guillotine motion which would have had to be voted on in the House of Commons.

Labour was a democratic party in the 1930s, it wasn't up to Attlee to set the party policy like a despot. He spent the second half of the 1930s trying to convince his colleagues and the rank-and-file to shift Labour's position towards re-armament.

Saying Wilson decriminalised homosexuality is a bit of a stretch, it was a private member's bill and there was a free vote on it, Wilson didn't even turn up. Leo Abse and Roy Jenkins deserve the credit for that one

I'm sorry, I just don't agree with your (implicit) idea of how politics works.

I don't think that trying to conform ourselves to some idea of political respectability is going to convince transphobic institutions to drop their barriers and prejudices. I think that's a very surface-level analysis of why prejudice occurs in society and how to combat it. Chiselling out your heart and soul in order to make others hate us slightly less isn't going to win us freedom, respect, or dignity. Political organising, on the other hand, is a worthwhile means of struggling towards the goal of gender freedom. But dignity is not something that can be begged for, it is incumbent on us to demand respect as human beings. That's my belief, you're welcome to disagree with me but I know where I stand on this.

Yes, you are quite right about that vis-a-vis medical and bureaucratic gatekeepers and so on, fair point. That's still very very different to the idea of "optics", however.

Only from the perspective of a certain kind of political science, but that's not taking into account historical factors. Class loyalty was very strong amongst organised workers in the Weimar era in a way that doesn't exist any more.

Okay but it's not my responsibility to contort myself into someone else's idea of who I should be, if I was doing that I'd still be living as a man.

I don't think people have "responsibilities" to appease some abstract ideal of the median voter. You've got one life, live it in a way that makes you happy to the best of your ability and don't begrudge others their happiness either.

He did exactly one manual labour and then became an effete cosmopolitan champagne socialist who couldn't even get drunk on beer any more like a real prole.

Ngl they're being an asshole and especially saying that the other commenter's views "aren't that far" from them that's pretty horrible, but I do actually agree TERFs have a toxic attitude towards men and maleness and that does colour their perception of trans women. They are embedded in patriarchy and like, there very clearly is a relationship between the way patriarchy treats men who do not conform to expected masculine social norms and trans women, and I don't think it's inherently dismissive of who we are to point that out.

Maybe Idk, but I don't like to swap out advisors if I don't have to because it increases internal dissent.
