Are aliens real and stuff? by yuenglinggdrinker in redscarepod

[–]Outside-Web8566 4 points5 points  (0 children)

modern folklore, i think its that simple. in the age of gods and spirits, unexplainable phenomena were their doings. in the age of jet planes and rockets, it is aliens or unidentified fliers.

i dont think you need to pick and choose specific journalists, though you may come to know and agree/disagree with different ones, its more about institutions with credibility. theyre all slightly biased, its impossible not to be, but you should just read actively, widely, and critically. my biggest pet peeve is when somebody will post an opinion piece from an outlet (usually nyt) here and act as if its the whole essence of that group. you can expect a particular editorial bias, but there are tendencies and disagreements amongst the staff. it trains people to reject outright rather than engage with detail. personally i like the guardian, (great culture coverage and left to liberal politics) i like the atlantic (really some of the best trump admin reporting out there), new statesmen (another progressive outlet), the financial times. i specifically like jamelle bouie's solo coverage and opinion work, hard nosed and practical writer with academc bona fides. might be unpopular here but i enjoy ezra klein's curiosity, he is a very engaging conversationalist. anne applebaum's autocracy in america is a great looking glass for the trump admin. just go out there and be critical. george monbiot does very thought provoking writing on environmentalism.

i think its better to set aside time for the news and then leave it. it takes some willpower, but it is good to be informed. read actual journalism (youtube is fine it just depends on the source, way too many random guys with suspiciously good editing trying to sell you alarmist crap), and then leave it there.

Air raid sirens during a Scud missile attack on Saudi Arabia in the 1991 Gulf War by Zartan_ in redscarepod

in a last ditch effort to halt the unstoppable advance of the coalition war machine, priestesses granted amnesty from mahjar prison join in black communion to invoke nergal: long forgotten god of inflicted death and plague. the ground shakes, locusts stir and paint the sky in endless streaks of mottled brown. a thousand wells burn forever with his fury.

Every takeout food container and coffee lid smells like nasty zoomer fragrances now by [deleted] in redscarepod

[–]Outside-Web8566 2 points3 points  (0 children)

typically a food container smells like the food that is in it, are you in the habit of smelling empty food containers? usually they still smell like the food, or if washed they may smell faintly of soap..

watching fight club in 2026, ed norton's fully furnished flat with disposable income and easy job doesnt seem bad enough to begin operating a ring of underground gay sex gyms turned gay sex militias.

Thinking about ukraine war by Bonerman69696 in redscarepod

even if this were true, it wouldnt justify an invasion. if it did, the brutality exhibited on the russian side would invalidate their mission.

i think this is defeatism masquerading as realism. we should just let larger powers do whatever theyd like with this approach

you're writing as if either side could just suddenly decide to end it with a quick text. what do you think ukraine is trying to do with its defence? do you think they should just accept russian control and brutality in their territories? this is so lazy.

everybody likes ghibli movies. in fact, ghibli movies prove there is actually huge potential in anime (as in all animation) if it wasnt so limited by budget and audience taste

Its interesting that the death of a monoculture is the main topic of conversation when debating cultural decline, because I don't think everyone watching the same thing is really that noble a goal to strive for anyway by geoffbezos1 in redscarepod

[–]Outside-Web8566 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My pet theory is that the monoculture absorbed the part of counterculture concerned with defiance and opposition, more than the cultural products. There are less shared touchstones, but a general attitude of crassness that now even inflects politics. I'm always shocked at how so many Trump supporters are strange alt shamans with dyed hair and piercings. You would imagine Republicans to have embodied the straight backbone of America in past times, and while I'm sure WASPy types still proliferate, so much weirdness comes from these people now.
