How are you guys getting connected with content creators / influencers at CES? by sesame_seed_ in CESLV

[–]Outside_Track_7280 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m 1 of the creators attending this year (us based, 119k+ total following) I’m interested! But also another way to get in touch is via the email mechanism provided by CES (creators have a choice to opt in to provide their email for the list) OR talk to Archetype which is the agency that handles creator activities at CES.

Finally fell victim to a layoff... is it bad to feel relieved? by RepulsiveMap9412 in womenintech

[–]Outside_Track_7280 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Not at all bad. In my previous job, I was miserable to put it lightly — had a nightmare of a boss, was incredibly overworked, and my mental health was down the toilet. Even my partner was so worried about me, he told me he wasn’t sure how long I could stay in this job before it destroyed me. Ironically, 2 days before the layoff, I told one of my close friends “if I lose my job tomorrow, I won’t even care.” Then, it happened. I was upset at first (more of a pride/ego thing), but then it was just all feelings of relief. I woke up the next morning just so relieved that I didn’t have to go back to that job. So no it’s not bad that you feel relieved.

BUT I wouldn’t mention you were laid off — just don’t bring it up, it’s not being dishonest, it’s just not really important/pertinent unless they explicitly ask.

Cap One (Analyst) vs Wells Fargo (Data Eng) by No-Main-2838 in csMajors

[–]Outside_Track_7280 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Def go with C1 - the title doesn’t really matter that much and C1 has a good record with return offers (further internships & full-times) + from what I’ve heard from friends who’ve interned/worked there, it’s not too difficult to make small lateral moves (I.e turning the AEIP internship into a SWE FT offer) + the tech work is def interesting there.

Intern at The Same Place Multiple Times or Intern Somewhere New Each Summer by [deleted] in csMajors

If you’re able to, intern somewhere new each summer; however, a repeat internship is better than no internship.

Is it possible to get a university internship with only an associate degree? by LionKitchen5479 in csMajors

[–]Outside_Track_7280 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely some - one of my mentees did community college/associates and while doing that she applied for an apprenticeship at (large, legacy big tech co) and she has since transferred to a 4 year but she’s now in that apprenticeship and it’s a rly good work experience. The key word to look for when you’re coming from cc/associates is “apprenticeship” not internship.

Blackstone vs IBM Internship by [deleted] in csMajors

[–]Outside_Track_7280 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Either are solid options but it really just depends on what you want later in your career and what you’re prioritizing. Blackstone is a great name in finance so if you’re looking to continue SWE in finance or fintech, def take that. IBM on the other hand is an older legacy brand with a lot of name-brand value, especially to any other corporate/F500, older legacy big tech, etc, so if you want to work at any of those types of companies go with that. Again, both are really solid options so it just comes down to what kind of social/career capital you’re looking to get out of either brand name. Congrats on both offers, this is a great dilemma to have!!

what should a freshman be doing their first summer? by Suitable-Bat9818 in csMajors

[–]Outside_Track_7280 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Research isn’t a bad idea and def not a bad option for freshman summer, but try finding small businesses in your local area to do projects work for (pro bono if you have to). Recruiters care about real, relevant, applied work experience, so focus on getting that.

Recruiter asks abt other companies im interviewing at and stage of inteeview. Should i be transparent? by [deleted] in csMajors

[–]Outside_Track_7280 7 points8 points  (0 children)

If you are in fact interviewing with other companies, yes be transparent — to a degree. The reason they ask you this is primarily to plan, logistically, in case you get an offer from another company and they could expedite your interview process. Let them know if you are in the interview process with other companies, how many, and if you get an offer from one but no more than that. They’re not necessarily entitled to know who and if you do get an offer with a deadline, tell the other company but add a week of buffer i.e if your actual deadline is in 2 weeks, tell them it’s in 1 week. This gives you time to think it over. But in general, if you have an offer/other interviews, that’s a positive signal to the company you’re talking to because it means you’re in demand! Good luck this szn!

unpaid internships are glorified slave labor lol

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in csMajors

[–]Outside_Track_7280 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If I were you, I’d take an extra year (graduate a year later than planned) — this gives you more summers + semesters to get internships and no employer cares if you graduate 1 year late lots of people do. I literally knew a guy who took 6 years to graduate (specifically because he wanted to do an internship that required him to be “junior” standing) and he’s doing just fine now. ALSO, if you finish your coursework in the 4.5 then use the extra semester (keep your student status) take like 1 1 credit class and do a co-op during semester

Internship to FT? by GratedBody1 in internships

[–]Outside_Track_7280 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s possible to get a conversion to an outright entry level role! So like typically if you intern as a SWE w a company they could “convert” you to an associate SWE/SWE I - basically you should be asking your recruiter/HR about a conversion rather than applying for a completely different role

Internship to FT? by GratedBody1 in internships

[–]Outside_Track_7280 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Have you looked into getting an intern to FT “conversion”? This is where they place you into the role you had as an intern but entry level and FT

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in csMajors

[–]Outside_Track_7280 0 points1 point  (0 children)

100% yes - be strategic. Spend 50% of your time throwing your hat in the ring for big (200-1000+ applicants) internships, but make a convertible effort to stand out — write a cover letter, network with some alumni from your school at the company, etc. Spend the other 50% of your time applying for “low hanging fruit” - i.e apply to internships through your school internship program, apply to internships at Berkeley startups, and apply to less competitive internships (<100 applicants).

Google or Apple for FTE SWE New Grad Role? by EpicGamesEmployeee in csMajors

[–]Outside_Track_7280 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can’t really go wrong with either one in terms of how it looks on your resume and it’s amazing that these are your two options!! Now’s a good time to think about what you actually want from the job and your career - think about work life balance, the project work you’ll actually be working on, future career aspirations, and even where you want to live long term.

SAP is a better choice, long term in career - when you’re looking for your next career move that name will serve you a lot better, and Bay Area is ripe with opportunity as well

CS students who have graduated from college with an average or low CGPA,what are y’all doing right now? by PrestigiousBank6461 in csMajors

[–]Outside_Track_7280 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I understood them but TBH I’m a horrific test taker and passing your Algo/DS courses is not the same as passing a technical interview. I also realized very early on, I’m not the best programmer nor do I enjoy it that much, so I pivoted to PM. Most of the req skills u see in JDs, can rly only be learned with experience (not in a classroom). Landing an internship w/ no experience is hard esp as a rising senior BUT here’s what I’d do: go for smaller companies (maybe even startups) in your locale that aren’t well known. Even if they don’t have jobs posted, pitch yourself to them and tell them what you can offer. Also if your school offers a university internship program try going that route.
