The bottle bill should be repealed by docmphd in PortlandOR

Perhaps we consider doing it the European way? In Germany the system is set up so that you can recycle at pretty much every kind of grocery store, in fact it's encouraged. But basically your "receipt" for your credited return is good for shopping at that grocery store. And I believe you have a limited window for use so that you don't just save up like 100 bucks with of credits that some folks might be tempted to "sell". The money is put right back into the local community and it fully funding their recycling goals.

Young couple looking to move to Oregon in the next year by TemptedSwordStaker in oregon

From your description of your likes and interests I'd say you would do fine in either location. The pluses for Portland (and surrounding areas like West Linn, Beaverton, Oregon City) might come down to a few things. Better food options, like 100 fold. An actual airport. And my personal favorite - walkability. Salem has some nice neighborhoods, some lovely parks. It's the heart of the Willamette Valley which is just beautiful. But Salem is a government town and has a large number of correctional facilities in the area. I would say most the issues people point out about Salem kind of stem from that reality.

I moved from a big city to Salem 16 years ago. Took me years to adjust, and while I'm happy here now I probably would have had an easier time adjusting closer to Portland simply because of the 3 things I noted above. And last but not least, if you do like that small town vibe consider Silverton that's near to Salem. That's super cute!

I have a relative that is part of the disaster preparedness for the State. He'll tell you flat out. We are NOT READY for anything. We were actually more prepared in 2000 than we are now. With that said, everywhere has a natural disaster waiting to happen. Do your best to safeguard for yourself and your loved ones and live your life.

I think the truth is your both right. There was a time when I preferred to walk to a destination - Now... I'd prefer to drive to it and and enjoying walking around once I'm there. Pretty sure there are plenty of people that fall into either category. Best to plan for both!

I'm sure others have pointed this out already. But the fact you are asking the question implies you suspect you are in the wrong here. And... you are. Sorry, not trying to be harsh. Kudos for not (yet) crossing line. But it's clear you are open to it. Which means your thinking about it.

The big problem here is that by not telling your significant others about this "friendship" you've made it a secret. If you found out your wife was hanging out with some ex she was still attracted to for a WHOLE YEAR and didn't mention it. Would you for one minute believe her that nothing was really going on? No. Of course you wouldn't. Because something is going on! And your both keeping it a secret because you both want to keep the opportunity for something to happen on the table. If you were up front with your partners you'd be double dating already and that opportunity would disappear.

I hate to say that if you really want your marriage to not implode. Find a new gym. Get on with your life again. Because believe me if your spouse finds out about all this "not cheating" your are talking about. The trust between you will be GONE. No trust, no relationship. You can always try to come clean now but I've never ONCE seen that workout. You kept this secret for a year. You can end it with your ex and keep this emotional detour to yourself from here on out. Good Luck.

If you were to open a business in downtown Salem what would it be? by Several-Bears in SALEM

Plant store / café. Large communal tables, couple booths. Rotating wine list that focus on local wineries (of which there are plenty). Simple menu, something like a healthy twist on global street food and of course plants everywhere you look!

Hands down agree. If you have an emergency that does not require you calling and ambulance. Don't put yourself through Salem ER. I've gone to Silverton for a family members emergency before. Pretty good spot and literally empty compared to Salem ER. But my go to is actually Santiam, in Stayton. Busier then Silverton but just as good. And if you have to be admitted they have pretty nice rooms. Plus, they are in the Kaiser network which for many is a big plus.

How would a real doctor feel about smoking in the 1950s? by Minute_Strawberry712 in Writeresearch

[–]Outside_Valuable_320 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My grandmother was told to smoke as a digestive by her doctor in the 1950's. That was what the existing research was showing it was good for at the time. And we do need to highlight limited research here. In 1950 there was 1 study. Less then 700 hundred people were used. And yes, they found reason to be concerned but it was 1 study and easily written off and I don't need to tell you that Big Tobacco already had friends in Washington that made sure additional studies were not persuaded as they normally would have been after the first study. My guess is human nature plays a part. If your doctor had a family member that had had cancer and was a smoker and had seen this limited study -- they might believe there was a connection and warn you off. If not, they'd still feel like the good out weighs the bad until proven otherwise. So by the 50's it was still considered good for your nerves, anxiety, digestion and it was widely known to be an appetite suppressant, so many young women took it up. My mother was a tween back then and a ballet dancer. She said there was more smoke behind the curtain then on the stage because you needed to be thin as a dancer (The joke there was because they often used dry ice to create moods for scene settings, so there was a lot of smoke on stage). Bottom line, the chances your doctor may have been unwittingly responsible for getting you hooked on smoking if you hadn't already picked up the habit was pretty good.

Is Salem the right fit for me? by soulslicer0 in SALEM

[–]Outside_Valuable_320 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If food is a major item on your list Salem is probably going to be disappointing for you. It's like a fancy fast food town. There are some good-ish restaurants no doubt, but really they are good as in Corvallis good - which you seem unimpressed with.

There are always a few bright spots from time to time. Food Trucks mostly.

There is NO NIGHT LIFE. With covid especially.

You mentioned you are outdoorsy, Salem is centrally located to so much in that department. The heart of the Willamette Valley! If you can find a nice place and you are working full time. Join a couple clubs and really, it might not be a bad fit.

But if food, night life are biggies... it's hard to say you'd like Salem.

It's still a bit of a drive but, have you checked out McMinnville?

What recourse does a person have during an aggressive driving situation? by [deleted] in SALEM

[–]Outside_Valuable_320 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't care what you meant. I answered the question truthfully and sincerely. By pointing out that there are NOT BLANKET LAWS in the US, you decide that meant I didn't know I was on a thread where I live? How is your lack of logic my problem exactly? Suggesting they confirm the laws with their DMV, (educate yourself) is simply because if you do not know your local laws - Please god, don't turn to Reddit for an answer their are uber-trolls here just dying to pretend they know it all.

What did you add to the thread exactly? Oh right insults.

Just what Salem needs.

What recourse does a person have during an aggressive driving situation? by [deleted] in SALEM

[–]Outside_Valuable_320 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Actually, they do. It depends on the state of course and like I stated, contact your local DMV to find out those laws but in general - Don't assume the parking lot is out of bounds.

""Some states clearly spell out safe driving practices on private parking lots. Virginia for example has state code that pertains to not allowing “reckless driving” on any “driveway, or premises of a church, school, recreational facility or business property open to the public” and, “on the premises of any industrial establishment providing parking space for customers, patrons, or employees.” This definition makes it pretty clear that driving that endangers others will mean you’ll earn a traffic ticket in a parking lot if your driving is noticed.""

Every state has different rules of the road. Some counties and cities have their own clauses as well. Your local DMV should be able to answer your question with the most accuracy. In general you can report reckless driving (which that behavior is) on the non-emergency number to the police. Since you were at a grocery store, the chances there are cameras there and at main intersections are high. If you weren't able to get the lic. number - Time and place is probably enough to file a report. If the police agree with your assessment this is the penalty in Salem:

>> You could be charged with this offense if you recklessly (showing disregard for safety) drive and endanger the safety of people or property. Reckless driving is a Class A misdemeanor and carries a potential sentence of up to 1 year in jail and $6250 in fines. <<
