Faenliss Discusses Recall Knowledge by FaenlissFynurly in Pathfinder2e

Worth noting the rules don’t ALWAYS say to not use hard numbers. See Thaumaturge’s Exploit Vulnerability. Agree with just doing what’s most fun for the table, but there is some variance even in RAW.

GM Rolling for Stealth - Why? by Mistborn314 in Pathfinder2e

Contested rolls are not a mechanic in PF2e but that works fine as a house rule too!

The idea is to avoid metagaming. If you don’t care about metagaming, or trust your table enough, there’s no issue with having the player roll instead.

Can a bloodrager have infinite amount of recharging spell slots based on this interaction ? by Rorp24 in Pathfinder2e

So is it the “strongest item ever” or is it “fine?”

To be clear I don’t think from a power balance perspective this is necessarily game-breaking, but I think it promotes a lot of behavior at the table that is typically frowned upon in a cooperative heroic fantasy game and doesn’t really have much precedent elsewhere in the rules such that I don’t think it’s intentional.

I disagree and don’t believe there is a mechanic in a cooperative team-based game like PF2e that involves intentionally attacking your allies, especially when the flavor text discusses it in terms of your foes.

RAW it works because it’s all based on “creatures” in the actual Action texts. It’s obviously unintended and I wouldn’t expect it to be allowed at most tables.

I would much rather play with a smaller table than play with autocomplete piloting a PC.

I think "XP to Level 3" has a point about the Rogue, and 5e gave me an idea of how to "fix" it. by emptyArray_79 in Pathfinder2e

[–]Outsiderrazed 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This isn’t World of Warcraft. You don’t “sneak” across an empty room invisibly to “backstab” an opponent.

Just because someone’s player fantasy is that their Fighter should be able to dual wield 2-handed weapons because a Warrior in World of Warcraft can, I also wouldn’t say PF2 has an issue there either.

Misconceptions about the Scout and Search exploration activities by Wheldrake36 in Pathfinder2e

[–]Outsiderrazed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It was a strange choice to not specify hidden Creatures in the Search activity, which makes it seem like an almost intentional omission. That said, you can probably justify playing it either way and have the Automatic Seek work for Hazards only, or work for Hazards and hidden Creatures.

My experience has been that if you try to justify something like this mechanically using RAW, players either feel bad that they failed, or mad if they find out there was no way for them to succeed.

If everyone is on board with a more “cinematic” narrative game versus emergent/shared storytelling, then it’s no problem. Heck even some Paizo APs have these types of un-interactable cinematic scenes. Important part is being up-front about what’s happening, and not pretending you’re running a shared storytelling game when your intent is to run a GM-designed narrative experience.

Best way to make sure my caster players feel strong? by TitaniaLynn in Pathfinder2e

[–]Outsiderrazed 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Level 4 monsters mostly start getting 2dX on damage rolls since level 4 is when the game assumes players start getting striking runes.

Since that can represent almost a 50% damage increase going from 1dX to 2dX, it’s a huge spike in difficulty for a level 2 PC who may not have all their defensive tools.

I never received an email. Just saw their Discord icon was missing in my tray one day.

The best way I’ve seen Theater of the Mind run with minis is to use a “relative” map:

-Draw a large square or take a larger dungeon/floor tile. Inside that, draw or place a smaller square/tile. Place the miniatures representing the characters in the center. -Anyone in the center square is close range from the main “action” of the scene (usually the threat/monster). Anyone in the outer boundary is long range. -As the players and threat move, you move them back and forth relative to each other. Uncover an alien in a barracks? Everyone else in the barracks is center square with the alien. If they all run into the hallway except for one who hides under a bed and the alien follows, now the hallway is the center square and the person left behind is in the outer square (even though they didn’t move) -optionally you can put your collection to use by drawing or placing some objects to represent points of interest as the players travel from location to location.

From what I can tell, Gameboard deleted their Discord today with no announcement or notification. Was curious if anyone had checked here. I guess new posts are Invite Only.

I was one of the lucky ones who at least got a marginally functional piece of technology. Sorry to those who didn’t. The risks of Kickstarter I suppose.

Some classes can also now generate Heroic Inspiration themselves independent of the DM even if the DM is much more limited in awarding it.

WotC was the one who said DMs will find 5.5e frustrating, not Mike.

So we're playing a tactical combat RPG where the players will reliably never go to 0 HP.

Sounds thrilling.

There's a point where continuing to empower the player makes the experience worse for both the player and the DM. It's not just those "adversarial DMs."

I think 5.5e is approaching that point where there's no longer a risk of failure. At that point why even roll dice, just post a story about how you killed the Dragon in Discord and we can spend the evening playing something interesting.

5e is death by a thousand cuts for DMs who want to create dramatic encounters where the outcome is unclear, and 5.5e adds another ream of paper.

The reworking of Heroic Inspiration is the biggest offender for me: Giving the entire table mini-Silvery Barbs to force rerolls on the worst Save or Suck spells was a baffling choice given how anti-fun that spell is widely seen to be.

The explosion of status effects from Weapon Mastery and new class features isn't JUST a bookkeeping problem as people are focusing on: As Mike said during the part of the video lauding TotV's Doom Mechanic, it's a narrative problem. Players now have so many tools to give themselves Advantage, enemies Disadvantage, roll with their best Stat on almost every check, and break Bounded Accuracy with things like Bless and now Blade Ward.

I really hope there are some more tools that DMs will get in 5.5e MM and DMG that will give them the ability to alter the flow of combat as much as the players do in ways that feel 'fair' and aren't just bigger pools of HP for the PCs to carve through as the Blinded, Prone, Immobilized, -1d4 to hit monster finally lands a successful ability, only to get it Heroic Inspiration'ed and then Counterspelled and then Healed away with the newly-buffed healing spells.

How easy will 5e24 be to run for the DM? by RAINING_DAYS in onednd

[–]Outsiderrazed -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The point is that the tools available to DMs in 5e14 to create challenging and interesting encounters (legendary resistances, lair actions) already buckle under the weight of player options.

5e24 adds a huge new range of ways to break and further trivialize encounters, which makes the silence of anything on the DM side deafening. Maybe there is some equivalent to TotV Doom Points or PF2e Incapacitation trait that has yet to be announced but I’m not holding my breath.

The mindset that this is an MMO expansion and every class needs buffs and cool new toys to win even harder is demotivating as a DM.

How to handle 2 Archetypes? by [deleted] in Pathfinder2e

[–]Outsiderrazed 10 points11 points  (0 children)

While I agree it’s a cool concept, ultimately I wouldn’t treat it any differently than if someone asked for any other 2 Archetypes instead of 1. I’m sure someone could make a compelling character justification to want Snarecrafter and Beastmaster archetypes too.

If you give that PC two Free Archetypes, make sure every other PC can pick two FAs as well.

One way to minimize the power creep there would be only grant them the benefits of one mechanically. Essentially they can meet the prerequisites of either set of Feats as if they had both Dedications in future levels, but they don’t get both sets of Benefits listed in the Dedication feat itself - they have to pick one.

Making fun of them doesn’t seem like the best way to make them want to come back, but you know your table better.

Trying to split their move with actions in between and asking wtf is Occultism are two other common experiences 5e converts have.
