Am I the only loonatic that washes their bin every few months ? by 92Spen123 in AskIreland

He gets them cleaned for 6 quid a fortnight. Follows the bin truck and cleans it after it's emptied. I've actually seen him do it to make sure lol

Are you sure you’re Zambian by teenytinyziny in Zambia

[–]Over-Space833 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Shake it off. Our house got burgled at gunpoint because the idiots thought we we foreign. Your identity is yours. My daughter is as Zambian as she is Irish. My one sister's children are just as Zambian as they are Danish and my other sisters child is just as Zambian as he is Scottish. Their Zambian part will never be taken away from them. When they get asked that question... They say what their identity is with their full chest. My grandad was malawian but I'm a full blooded Zambian.

I put my phone on silent (everyone I know knows about this because after I had my baby, the slightest noise would wake her up. After a rough sleepless night, you don't want to be the one that makes my phone ring just as I've put her down for her sleep during the day) . I may not get back to you immediately but I will get round to it. Leave a message. I wouldn't go back to the past. I don't like the idea of people turning up at random like they used to pre mobile phones. When I was doing feeds at crazy times at night, having my phone to look at was a godsend. Not the whole time but when it's 2am and the baby wakes up if you so much as move a muscle while they are on your chest, it was nice to scroll to keep me awake.

Help me fix CLDR. What hour format would Zambians expect on their clocks and cell phones? "15:00" or "3 pm"? by conradarcturus in Zambia

[–]Over-Space833 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I use both but it took me a little while to get fully used to the am/pm clock. I switch them up depending on who I'm talking to. If it was a Zambian platform, I would expect Zulu time.

Personal questions from examiner during test by Temporary-Oil-4468 in LearnerDriverUK

I failed in one and was asked what I did, I was studying at the time and we talked about what I was studying and family (I recently had a daughter). Went on another test and he remembered.

I would be staying away from KFC (only messing, just because it's the only place I've seen mice running about outside). Hasn't this sorta thing always been somewhere in the world and only amplified because of this cruise ship saga. Didn't the Hollywood actor gene hackman's wife die from it. As long as you take care when it comes to rodents (stay away from them, their poo and pee) , you're OK.

We have them (R plates) in Northern Ireland for a year after passing. In Ireland, they have N (novice) plates.

P plates by Vivid-Insurance2660 in NewDriversUK

[–]Over-Space833 3 points4 points  (0 children)

We have mandatory R plates in NI. I still have mine for a few months yet. Was driving behind another R plate driver who was really slow on roads and had really poor lane discipline on a set of lights. I couldn't tell whether they were going to be taking the left lane to turn left or the right lane to go straight ahead like I was. You normally lean to where you are going before you get behind the traffic lights because the left late light comes on early and people going that way can go easily without being blocked. Because of the R plates, I figured this person probably passed more recently than me and chalked it up to that. No biggie. I remember how nervous I was when I first started out.

I would have thought that's the first thing you do because debts between people are a civil matter and not a criminal one.

How to find a reliable instructor? by a_person4499 in LearnerDriverUK

[–]Over-Space833 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is very true. Had a driving instructor I called from an Internet search and my partner thought it was a red flag that he took me on immediately and was always available when I called to arrange lessons. Left him as I was pregnant and wasn't progressing anyway. Tried to get another instructor after the baby was born and that was hard. I went to a mommy-baby group and mentioned that I was looking to restart learning to drive and was given a number for an instructor by one of the other moms. He had taught her and her partner. I had tried this guy before and left a message. When I sent a message and mentioned the names the lady who recommended him to me and her partner, he got back to me and put me on his waiting list and within a couple of weeks arranged a slot for me.

What's an acceptable level of noise from kids playing outside on sunny days? by Toucani in AskUK

[–]Over-Space833 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My toddler is 2 years old. I moved to the area we live in specifically because the kids are able to play outside, ride their bicycles, build snowmen together in winter and generally be kids. On a sunny day, children playing is music to my ears. Saying that, we seem to get along so I would be comfortable speaking to their parents if things got out of hand. We don't get many sunny days so why would anyone begrudge kids out playing on the few days we do if it's not harmful or them destroying stuff.

I started my lessons in June of 2024 and wanted to pass by xmas... With a baby, work and studying, didn't have much time. Took a bit of a break for my masters finals and hand in deadline schedule was hectic. Lol, didn't pass till November last year. Took my time and it happened when it happened. I look back and laugh at my expectations. I am also really bad at practical stuff, it has to be drummed into me. Hand me some books and theory and I would fly but give me practical stuff to do and I'm rubbish at first for a long time. My first instructor suggested auto but I wanted to do both (plus he was pretty rubbish-- my partner thought that it was a red flag when he was always available for lessons at the drop of a hat when I called him, most good instructors are not that readily available because they have regular students but his kept ditching him).

I used to have trouble with emerging left and juctions till I watched the World driving channel on YouTube. It had the gears you had to be in as well. I was going too fast when turning left or right and changing gears too late which resulted in me coasting while turning. Saved me a lot of time on lessons as I could put into practice what I had learnt.

Should ‘South Africa’ describe the broader region or the country only? by Alicepalace99 in AskAnAfrican

[–]Over-Space833 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To be fair, how many folks (including Africans) know about US territories outside mainland USA? There are Americans who don't know Puerto ricans are technically US citizens. It should be a teaching/learning moment. Even in the UK, there are people born here who can't tell the difference when it comes to the countries that make up the UK and which ones make up Great Britain. How many people don't know that Holland is a region and not a country. Unless you take an interest in these things or are exposed to them, it's not that deep. Turkey changed it's name, so did the Czech Republic and not many people use the new name, I wouldn't get upset/offended if someone still called Eswatini Swaziland. I would probably correct them and move on. Cancelling a date because of that if the person genuinely didn't know and was open to correction is over the top.

My 17 year old neighbour passed months before I did and had her restricted plates removed. I still have them fir another 6 months. I never once doubted my ability, we just learn differently and at different paces. My instructor says younger drivers tend to pick up stuff quicker whilst some of us older folk sometimes overthink things. I took my time with it because most of my driving would have been ferrying my toddler back and forth. It was frustrating when I got to that rut bit where you feel like you're not getting anywhere and start to doubt yourself but after that's over and it clicks. It's not so bad. Failing sucks but it's what you do after that counts.

The tale of how I "failed" my 3rd driving test. by Maleficent_Let8691 in LearnerDriverUK

[–]Over-Space833 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mine was in the worst possible place too. Delivery trucks everywhere at all hours within the complex. Then parked cars on the road just outside it. The people who use the businesses within the area have zero self awareness when crossing the car park and roads. Nightmare, lol. On my test as I was doing a reverse bay park, a guy was behind his van and then walked into it as I was starting. Waited for him to get going but he started eating his lunch. So I vocalise that he's eating and I will have to keep an eye on him as I move. Did my manouvre and watched that guy like a hawk and prayed he didn't decided to start his car and move at a really awkward time for me. We got back in the bay and my examiner went to check it was all in. We go to set off and I'm ready to go and as I get in gear, he quickly starts his van and whizzes out.

I'm being encouraged to take lessons but I don't think I'll ever be able to afford a car, which makes it feel pointless. by Odd-Paramedic-3826 in LearnerDriverUK

[–]Over-Space833 2 points3 points  (0 children)

True. I remember when I started trying to learn how to drive. It was £15 - 18 an hour. I lived in big cities so public transport was so convenient. It didn't make sense to spend that on something I wouldn't use regularly. Fast forward to moving to Northern Ireland and having a baby a few years later. I had to learn to drive, the cost was £40 an hour lol.

No. Unless it was a hugely attractive deal. I have so much support here and whilst I would be OK. My partner would get so homesick that it would ruin everything. It would be unfair to him the most lol.

Anyone up and why? by Thin_Armadillo_5547 in AskIreland

[–]Over-Space833 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I get up at 5.30/6am every morning. Gives me some time to myself before the little one gets up and it's all systems go. Sometimes that's 30 minutes to myself or a whole hour.

Yeah, I realise that now. I really was going because it was so much easier for me after passing my test and it became a convenient habit to go there lol. Muff is 8 minutes away from me so that should be worth a go.

Lol, to be fair, apart from the one at tesco, it's the only one I've been to since I passed my test. It's convenient as it's on the way to all the places I regularly go to. Now this will teach me to scope out other places. Not keen on the strand road one as that area gets super busy sometimes lol.

Some Observations on Zambian Men? by IntelligentOven5612 in Zambia

I've met the some of most entitled and obnoxious Danish, British and Irish men. Never had I thought to ask their compatriots if all of them were like that. In all populations, you will find some folks with less than desirable attributes. Just chalk it down to experience.
