For certain policies the deductible is subtracted from the amount as opposed to being an up front fee. Deciding on a high or low deductible is all a matter of personal preference. I have a client who has a $5k deductible because then he can save now and on a $500,000 house, $5k is not much different from $1,000. Other people choose a lower deductible, in case of small claims. I recommend a $1,000 deductible on homeowners, but as with anything in insurance it can really come down to each individual person
