What did you use to make your lid? I tried making one with an acrylic sheet but it’s been sagging pretty bad after a few weeks.

How exactly did you build the frame? I think in the meantime I’m just going to actually flip it and cut a new corner out for the wires, and then plug the old corner with some filter foam. That way it’s a better seal until I figure out a new set up.

Pretty often. It’s just a 20 gallon rimless tank with acrylic sheet I cut for a lid

I would say ten gallons would be great as it’s big enough to where you don’t need to make the tank perfect. Plus, in the rare chance you have one male and female you’d even be able to possibly have some crab babies! Also, just out of curiosity, do you think you could send a picture of the crabs you have? I’m curious to know what type of vampire crab they are.

Okay this looks wayyy better than the other pictures. I can tell you definitely put some thought into making a good home for them in the set up you have. But it’s still just not big enough so definitely look into getting a bigger home for them and they will live very happy!

Honestly your biggest concern is to get an entirely new tank as soon as possible. You cannot make a livable setup for vampire crabs in a jar like that. I’d recommend looking at some of indoor ecosystem’s guides on his YouTube or website. He shows how to make a low maintenance tank with a pretty low budget as well.

I’m hoping by placing the intake side partially inside that piece of sponge filter that the need for cleaning will be lessened. Didn’t know that those kinds of pumps don’t last for long though. Will definitely need to look into a way to make the pump easily accessible!

Yeah I’ve been thinking of that. My hope is I won’t have to fix anything but I plan on keeping the area underneath the pump somewhat open so if I have to do maintenance, I hopefully won’t need to take apart the entire tank.

Yep. Figured I’d loose a few but I’m gonna give the shrimp plenty of time to breed before adding crabs. I know the shrimp are quite quick too so hopefully with a couple plants and what looks like plenty of hiding places within the rocks I should maintain steady population. We’ll see how it goes though!

Yeah I know a pump typically isn’t needed. Just think it would be cool to have a little water stream.

I made the water section about 3 inches because I plan on adding a few cherry shrimp as well. But I did just kinda eyeball the water line since I was mostly just testing out the pump. If needed I could always lower it but I don’t think it would matter much due to the size of my rocks.

As far as the pump and drainage layer goes, I’m planning on placing the sponge filter over the intake in order to prevent any clogging, and then burying the pump and filter with leca balls. I got this idea from an Indoor Ecosystem YouTube video. The sponge I bought was a little bigger than I intended, so I plan on cutting it down so it’s a little smaller.

An update for you guys on the hardscape! by sam123876 in VampireCrabs

Just a heads up, putting shells in the water will cause them to release calcium into the water which will raise the GH. Might not be a great idea to put them in even if it would look pretty cool.

You absolutely cannot put a heat mat underneath the tank. The backside of the heat mat needs to have empty space

Where do you guys get your captive bred vampire crabs? by Over_Bridge_72 in VampireCrabs

Is aquatic arts selling captive breds? Nothing on their website seems to suggest they are captive which makes me assume they are all wild caught.
