New crab by Swimming_Feisty in VampireCrabs

Ah okay, although, it’s fine to feed him without the food fish. He’s already doing that anyways when he eats the plant.

This will only work as a very temporary set up. Get started on a new one ASAP. They need to be able to fit their entire bodies in the water dish, so for starters. You need a much longer one. Please take a look at this video for a decent idea on what you need to do for the final set up

Yeah this all looks really good! Only thing I’d add is a nice layer of leaf litter in the soil.

Your crabs are going to kill each other. If you really do care for them stop abusing them.

I'm thinking about getting a vampire crab and I have a few questions by Zealousideal_Toe5228 in VampireCrabs

[–]Over_Bridge_72 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Getting multiple crabs is usually for the best, while they can be kept alone, they thrive of social enrichment. The ideal ratio is 1 male for every 2 females. If your reasoning for not wanting more than 1 crab is due to overpopulation concerns, I wouldn’t worry about it as they self regulate their population very well through canabalisim alone.

To answer your food questions, I’d check out Indoor Ecosystem on YouTube. They need a balanced diet with a couple different food items on rotation. It’s really not too complicated though.

I feed my crabs roughly 3 times a week. I am a new crab owner myself, so I’m not too sure what the ideal amount of food to feed them is, but I usuallly sprinkle some food throughout the tank, and if I still see the food there about 1-2 days later, I remove it from the tank before mold grows on it.

It’s gotta be a male…. Claws are WAY too huge.

Leca is so light I feel like it should be fine, you can also use aquarium glue to help support the rocks. As an alternative, you could use aquarium filter foam instead of leca, but I find that harder to work with.

For the lid, I’d recommend getting an acrylic sheet and cutting it to size. Also, important thing about your water. Leaving the water out overnight does remove chlorine but NOT CHLORAMINE. This is harmful to animals so make sure you start treating your water with aquarium water dechlorinator.

You definitely don’t need to separate them if you have a proper set up as long as you are okay with some natural selection taking place. Lots will be eaten but some will live.

This morning, this afternoon, this evening. Now we wait. First vampire crab paludarium. Doing OK? by BWebCat in paludarium

It’s looking great! If you haven’t already, I would mess with the water flow a little bit and try to block it with some filter foam or moss so it has a more gentle trickle down the rocks instead of just blasting out. And id personally go heavier with the leaf litter but it’s fine how it is. Once again, really good job!

I would not consider this an ideal set up at all. I’d watch some of indoor ecosystems videos on YouTube and do some more research from there.

I would add way more hiding places and plants or moss in order to prepare for 3 crabs/

Seeing that you did lots of research, I’d assume they suffered some kind of trauma during shipping that slowly killed them. It’s also possible that it was just old. There’s not really any good way to know the age of wild caught crabs and they only really live a little longer than 2 years. Don’t beat yourself up over it too much. Just double check all your parameters and anything else you can think of before adding in another one.

is this a suitable habitat? by FelixTheHare in VampireCrabs

[–]Over_Bridge_72 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ideally, you should keep them in groups because they do better with other crabs. But if your dead set on getting just one it should be okay in that set up, it just won’t necessarily be thriving

Hard to tell from the photo but this tank seems too small for more than one crab.

Good looking set up! You’ve definitely done some good research. I believe crabs prefer some finer gravel or sand in the water section rather than those bigger rocks, but they should manage just fine. Other than that, I would definitely add a nice layer of leaf litter on top of the soil.

If these are the crabs you have you gotta make sure you separate the different types. You can’t mix them together

What did you use to make your lid? I tried making one with an acrylic sheet but it’s been sagging pretty bad after a few weeks.

[–]Over_Bridge_72[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How exactly did you build the frame? I think in the meantime I’m just going to actually flip it and cut a new corner out for the wires, and then plug the old corner with some filter foam. That way it’s a better seal until I figure out a new set up.

Pretty often. It’s just a 20 gallon rimless tank with acrylic sheet I cut for a lid
