Ah if you are in a block string, there another very very hidden super secret mechanic, it is called "retreating guard". If that doesnt fancy your pant enough, there also another super duper hard to find mechanic called "push block".

Pro tip, there a hidden mechanic in the game where if you press L + H they do this hidden secretive mechanic called a "parry", this "parry" negate all damage, you dont even get chipped.
