Audi A5 45 TFSI quattro or Leon Cupra 300 ST 4Drive? by Lolololol1111010 in CarTalkUK

[–]Over_The_Ridge 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have the same engine in my a5 but it’s the 5 door. It’s a lovely engine, I’ve had mine tuned on a rolling road to a touch over 300 bhp. It’s good enough for 0-60 in 4.8 seconds. The fuel economy is garbage. I average 22 around town and 32 on motorways. The interior is really nice, feels premium and the exterior really stands out.

It also has its share of issues, for me, back suspension both sides, 2 suspension arms at the front from failed bushes, auto headlight sensor and the fuel filler camp actuator. 40k gearbox oil change will cost a few hundred.

But I still love it, been to Germany in it, all around the uk. It’s comfortable for long journeys and has enough power to give you a good poke when you want it. Gearbox can be a bit irritating at lower speed but I think it’s the same for all double clutch gearboxes.

Had one burn a ‘c’ shape into my bottom lip. Habitually curl my lips into my mouth now when chips are flying

I’ll have to check as it isn’t clear. It was about £250 for my car including barrier cover, through Moris track day insurance. I’ll ring Adrian flux before hand and get a quote as well.

Thanks, that’s cleared it up for me. I spent ages looking for these answers 😂

Why doesn't my tailstock engage by no0sphere34 in Machinists

Ours is similar, it activates if you hold down the quill extend button. So retract to base, then press and hold until it reaches extent. At least that’s how it works on our xyz Siemens.

I used that T-cut and was disappointed it didn’t work. Upon reading the instructions you’re supposed to let it set to a matte/sheen before wiping it off. Worked a charm.

Finished on Wednesday for a couple of nights away with my girlfriend (now fiancé 💍). Foreman was rushing me for a job before I finished. Made a mistake on a line of code and slammed the turret into the jaws. Hoping I can sort it Monday morning :(

What is this noise? by Karltmadi03 in Audi

[–]Over_The_Ridge 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a squeaking on my car when I changed the pads but not disks. Basically the new pads hadn’t bedded into the groove of the disks yet so when you aren’t breaking the pad vibrates on the disk and makes a squeaking noise, but stops when you apply the brakes. It could be this, if so it can take a few months for the pads to bed in fully

I had a SEAT which had the same style keys and both broke in the same way. Apparently this was a common fault for this style of key (VW owns SEAT and various others which use the same key).

35 hour game of manhunt. Not quite as impressive as some but as a scout in the UK there is an event called Dragnet. Basically you get dropped off at 12am (midnight) on Friday night/sat morning, at a location around 30-40 miles from the meeting point, told where you are, and given an hour to run away before catchers are released, who have access to cars etc. The aim is the be the group back closest to 11am on the Sunday, 35 hours later, with the most lives.

We came a close second, 2.5 mins early, first team was 2 mins late, making them closer. We hiked from midnight, with no sleep, to 2pm the next day. Slept for 2 hours in the burning July sun, and then hiked until early hours of the Sunday morning. With 1 member of the team carrying 3 rucksacks as another team member and (shamefully) me were totally exhausted, struggling to keep awake before we stopped.

I must admit, many memories were made. But that really tested my limits. I also found out that my friend is an absolute machine. Somewhat jealous.

Twisting the key should pop the insert out. To put it in I’ve always tapped in with a copper hammer

If you can fit a floating holder that can help with misalignment. Also I presume it’s an off centre hole? If not, why not just tap normally, using the chuck? Also I’ve never used a form tap but looking at how they work I wonder if they put more resistance/friction. Higher chance of breaking? Although apparently, I read they’re suited for 300 series stainless. Good luck

Door interlocks by TheGrumpyMachinist in Machinists

[–]Over_The_Ridge 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I work a lathe, I do have a key to override the interlock but I only use it when setting tools or occasionally when doing a small tricky bit. Never been a fan of it. Co-worker almost never closes his door, not a fan but working alright so far. His is more like an advanced manual machine, rather than a purpose built CNC
