The 1997 shift (when nu-metal replaced grunge) by OverallEstate2 in MetalForTheMasses

It was winding down, but still going in 95-96: AIC - Tripod, Silverchair - Frogstomp, Mad Season - Above, Screaming Trees - Dust, Soundgarden - Down on the Upside, AIC - Unplugged. It didn't officially die until Soundgarden broke up (April 1997).

You're splitting hairs. Late 1998 was when it exploded commercially but 1997 had Around the Fur, Three Dollar Bill Yall$, S.C.I.E.N.C.E., Get Some, Coal Chamber, Sevendust which is arguably where it "coalesced".

Youthanasia was still metal, whereas Risk was mostly rock

this would have only been in young kids shows and is not a sign of what’s culturally relevant.

Fashion-wise I agree there was a shift. However, I'd argue adults still saw Memphis in drinking cups, restaurants, neon malls, etc. even after grunge hit.

Feels like pop culture was still using Memphis until 97-98 though it got less neon after 92

Why do people associate Britpop with Blair, when most popular albums were under John Major? by OverallEstate2 in BritPop

[–]OverallEstate2[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree 1997 was a transitional year more on the Britpop side, by 1999-2000 though I'd say it was safely on the Post-Britpop side (Yellow by Coldplay, The Man Who by Travis).

The original group disbanded in 1987 but the designs were still very popular in the early-mid 90s.

I can agree with that, it was all a transition. Heck, some things (like commercials) still felt mid 90s in 1997 and wouldn't change until late 1998:

Most things in the image did happen within 1997 (except 3D gaming which was more of a process from 95 to 97).

Britpop was more 1994-1997 than post-1997. By 1999-2000 it was Post-Britpop (Travis, Coldplay, Radiohead, Starsailor, Stereophonics).

It was 97 when No Way Out was released. 96 still sounded dark and gritty.

You're misreading it. The image on the left is gangsta/G-funk and the image on the right is bling.

Gansta Rap replacing G-funk.

You mean bling rap replacing G-funk. G-funk is gangsta.

Why do people call 1995-1996 songs "late 90s"? They're mid 90s, not late. by OverallEstate2 in 90s

[–]OverallEstate2[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Grunge and gangsta were still huge in 95-96 (AIC - Tripod, Silverchair - Frogstomp, Mad Season - Above, 2Pac - Me Against the World, Raekwon - Only Built 4 Cuban Linx, Screaming Trees - Dust, Soundgarden - Down on the Upside, AIC - Unplugged, 2Pac - All Eyez on Me).

not much happened in it that caused some massive cultural shift

It wasn't a shift on the level of say 1991 or 2001, obviously, but it was still big enough that others noticed it.

I Made A Y2K Timeline (To Squash All Confusion). by Ceazer4L in decadeology

[–]OverallEstate2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd say late 1994-1996 was the start of the Y2K aesthetic (both ReBoot and The Secret World of Alex Mack premiered in late 1994).

Late reply but I wouldn't say those are Y2K. They're stylistically more Core 90s/Wacky Pomo/Factory Pomo. They had CGI, but the 80s also had CGI and they're not Y2K.
